Explained: Gary Neville banned by Nottingham Forest in ‘unprecedented and unwelcome step'
Nottingham Forest have denied accreditation to Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville from working at their City Ground stadium for the final day of the Premier League campaign. Neville was scheduled to be involved in Sky's coverage for Forest's home match against Chelsea on Sunday, with both sides aiming to secure a top-five league finish and a place in next season's Champions League. Advertisement Sky have described Forest's denial of accreditation to former Manchester United defender Neville, who had been due to co-commentate on the match, as an 'unprecedented and unwelcome step'. The broadcaster have now decided to reverse their plan of presenting the match from the City Ground stadium and their studio analysts will instead film in their Sky Studios in west London, with Neville deciding he would not take part in the coverage — a decision Sky say they 'fully support'. Sky, who had planned for their 50-year-old pundit to have two security staff for the match, have said their commentary team of the match will be located at Forest's City Ground. Forest's decision is not in breach of Premier League rules, which allow clubs to decide who they allow media accreditation. Responding to the accreditation denial, Neville posted on his Instagram account on Friday: 'I've dished out my fair share of criticism and praise in the last 14 years of doing this job and have never come close to this unprecedented action. A post shared by Gary Neville (@gneville2) 'Personally, I think it's disappointing that a great club like Nottingham Forest have been reduced to making such a decision. Whilst they have every right to choose who they let into their own stadium, it's symptomatic of things that have happened over the last 12 months with the club.' In July last year, Sky apologised to Forest for 'any offence caused' after Neville accused the club of acting like a 'mafia gang' following a statement the club released after their 2-0 loss at Everton three months earlier. Forest sent Sky a legal letter following Neville's comments, which had followed the Premier League club publicly criticising the officiating on social media following that defeat at Goodison Park. Former England international right-back Neville also said the club were acting 'like a petulant child, it's embarrassing'. Advertisement Forest were later charged by the Football Association (FA) in relation to the post regarding the officiating in their side's loss at Everton. An independent panel, made up of three ex-players or coaches, a representative of the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) and a Premier League representative, later unanimously agreed that Forest should have had one penalty during the Everton game, for Ashley Young's 55th-minute challenge on Callum Hudson-Odoi. Neville has not been involved in any coverage at the City Ground for Sky in the 2024-25 campaign. Neville was critical of Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis after he entered the pitch to confront the club's head coach Nuno Espirito Santo following a 2-2 draw at home to Leicester City earlier this month. The Forest owner could be seen having an animated conversation with the head coach on the edge of the pitch immediately following a frustrating 2-2 draw that put a dent in the club's hopes of securing Champions League qualification. Neville called on Nuno to consider leaving the club following the incident, which the Portuguese head coach described as a 'miscommunication' over Forest using their final available substitution with striker Taiwo Awoniyi remaining on the pitch despite colliding with a post. A frustrated mood at the final whistle was underlined when Marinakis appeared to rant at Nuno as he made his way off the pitch. 'Scandalous from that Forest owner,' Neville posted following the incident. 'Nuno should go and negotiate his exit tonight with him! The Forest fans, players and manager do not deserve that.' Everything you need to know about
In America, Saturday Night Live has been a television institution for the past 50 years – and now it's being given a makeover for its first foray over the Atlantic to the UK. Each Saturday night, a celebrity host will take to the stage in London to present a string of satirical sketches alongside the SNL team of stand-up comedians and improv comics. Through the sketches, the team tackle the latest political and pop culture news through a skewed, hilarious lens. Alongside each celebrity guest host will be a chart-topping star who will perform throughout the night as well. SNL creator Lorne Michaels is set to executive produce Saturday Night Live UK, in addition to continuing to executive produce SNL on NBC in the US. SNL UK will be produced by Broadway Video and Universal Television Alternative Studio's UK production team. Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios and Chief Content Officer at Sky, said of the new project: 'For over 50 years Saturday Night Live has held a unique position in TV and in our collective culture, reflecting and creating the global conversation all under the masterful comedic guidance of Lorne Michaels. 'The show has discovered and nurtured countless comedy and musical talents over the years and we are thrilled to be partnering with Lorne and the SNL team to bring an all-British version of the show to UK audiences next year – all live from London on Saturday night!'

'F*ck Off' – Brits React To News Of A UK Saturday Night Live
A UK version of Saturday Night Live (SNL), a show which has been a staple of American channel NBC since its launch in 1975, will air in 2026, broadcaster-to-be Sky says. The show, which has helped to propel the careers of big-name comedy forces like Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, and Norm Macdonald, will 'bring an all-British version of the show to UK audiences next year – all live from London on Saturday night!', CEO of Sky Studios Cecile Frot-Coutaz said. But fans don't feel that the UK adaptation will be quite up to the iconic standard of the venerated American original. 'I hope it feels distinctively British, as a lot of SNL humour doesn't translate,' TV critic Scott Bryan said. 'Also, as Richard Osman pointed out on Rest is Ents lately, locking in a cast for a while is hard as they will get offers elsewhere.' A few thoughts on this one.I hope it feels distinctively British, as a lot of SNL humour doesn't as Richard Osman pointed out on Rest is Ents lately, locking in a cast for a while is hard as they will get offers elsewhere. — Scott Bryan (@scottygb) April 10, 2025 Others speculated that the UK doesn't have the same tradition of improvised comedy, sometimes called improv, that's essential to the American show. I quite like SNL but agree with @restisents that UK doesn't really have a tradition of improv and sketch in the same way. That said, this could be a great opportunity to showcase the British improv community... as long as they do that and don't just cast already-famous standups — Jen Thornton (@jenthornton01) April 11, 2025 Others were more direct: 'having a good time coming up with reasons why this won't work. I'm up to fifty,' comedian Avery Edison said. actually having a good time coming up with reasons why this won't work. I'm up to fifty — Avery Edison (@aedison) April 10, 2025 Meanwhile on Reddit, a post shared to r/Fauxmoi led commenters to reply: 'UK TV is vastly different from the US, and I don't think format, nor the humour, would translate well.' 'Oh fuck off,' u/organic_soursop opined. 'Decades long, smug, painful, self-referential nonsense. Every time they share clips of sketches, they are just shiiiit. We'd have a main cast filled with Footlights alumni and Radio4 comedians and the latest wanker from Love Island presenting each week. 'Fuck off, no. It's doomed.' It's not actually the first time SNL has (indirectly) reached UK screens. Channel 4′s Saturday Live, which included Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, ran on the channel in the '80s and, while unaffiliated with the US show, many connected it to the NBC hit. It was resurrected in 1996 but did not stick around. Here's hoping the real thing goes a little better than some Brits expect...
