Major dairies raise milk prices by Rs 2 per litre in Mumbai
Mumbai: Three major milk brands, Amul, Gowardhan and Mother Dairy have all increased prices by up to Rs 2 per litre effective April 30-May 1, citing higher procurement costs.
Amul has raised the rates of its standard, cow and buffalo milk as well as Taaza, Gold,.Slim n Trim and Chai Mazza variants. The company had in fact dropped the price of one-litre packs by a rupee in Jan 2025, the first decrease in living memory.
This present round of hikes was led by Mother Dairy, which raised prices by up to Rs 2 on April 30 citing "early onset of summer and heatwave conditions which affected procurement". Its premium full cream milk now costs Rs 78 over Rs 76. Late evening, Parag Milk Foods increased the rate of its Gowardhan brand by Rs 2 as well. "The revision is driven by rising costs of milk procurement," said Ajay Singh Barodia, president, sales. "This adjustment helps us support our dairy farmers facing increased input costs." Gowardhan Gold cow milk which was Rs 58 earlier now costs Rs 60. Gowardhan Fresh (toned) variant was Rs 56 and is revised to Rs 58 per litre.
Interestingly Mother Dairy has raised the rates of both one litre and half litre packs by one rupee in certain variants, making it cheaper to buy bigger packs. For instance, its one litre packs of full cream milk rose to Rs 69 from Rs 68 while the half litre pouch costs Rs 35 up from Rs 34. So two half litre packs cost Rs 70, making it expensive by a rupee.
