Maple Leafs fans turn on Auston Matthews in ugly playoff loss

Maple Leafs fans made their feelings about Auston Matthews quite clear on Wednesday night. A member of the Toronto faithful tossed Matthews' jersey onto the ice as the team was in the midst of getting dismantled 6-1 by the Panthers at ScotiaBank Arena. 'I don't think we gave them much reason to stick around,' Matthews told reporters of the negative fan reaction. The loss was the third straight for the Maple Leafs after they won the opening two games, and now are on the brink of elimination with the series shifting back to South Florida for Game 6 on Friday night. Matthews is goalless in this series. He hasn't scored since the deciding Game 6 against the Senators in the first round. 'I don't think there's really any excuse or explanation,' Matthews said of the team's lifeless performance. 'We've got to win a game to keep our season alive.' Marner, 28, led the team with 102 points this season but is heading toward free agency this offseason. Fans on social media trashed the team's two biggest stars. They can both leave for all I care. Absolute loser energy players,' one fan wrote on X. 'Did anyone tell Marner and Matthews that 'All or Nothing' was not meant to be taken literally orrrrrr ?' The scrutinized franchise has not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, and the team now has to rally to win two straight against the defending champions to keep their season alive. Toronto was a goal away from taking a 3-0 series lead, but fell 5-4 in overtime in Game 3 before getting outscored 8-1 in the next two games. 'This what was the worst performance we've seen in a long time in a game that had so many implications,' Rangers legend Mark Messier said on the ESPN postgame show. '(One of) two things are going to happen going into Game 6: This was so devastating for the Maple Leafs, they completely quit on themselves and each other or this is going to be so incredibly embarrassing that they are going to rally around each other and come up with their best performance of the year… They have to show up and show some character.'

What went wrong for Blues in chaotic final seconds of third period in heartbreaking Game 7 loss to Jets

There is playoff heartbreak — and then there is what happened to the Blues on Sunday night. St. Louis was 2.2 seconds from upsetting Winnipeg, which had an NHL-best 116 points this season, in Game 7 of their opening-round series before a chaotic sequence led to a game-tying goal from Cole Perfetti. Advertisement 'We think we can get the puck and win the battle,' Blues coach Jim Montgomery told the St. Louis Post Dispatch said afterward. 'Unfortunately we didn't and we're out of structure, and that's why there's an odd-man … there's a 3-on-2 at the net. They whiffed on their one-timer and it went right to a guy in the slot. For whatever reason, puck-luck in this series, if you look at the home teams, the puck-luck was incredible. That's why I think you ended up with seven wins by the home teams.' The Jets scored the tying goal with 2.2 seconds left in regulation on May 4, 2025. NHLI via Getty Images Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich was also roasted for a suspect decision with 46 seconds left. The former Ranger had room to skate and kill some time, but instead fired from his own blue line and missed the empty net, leading to an icing call against the Blues. The Jets would go on to win in double overtime to end the series when Adam Lowry deflected in a shot with 3:50 remaining. 'Yeah, that one stinks,' Blues captain Brayden Schenn told the paper. 'That one sucks. Just from a two-goal lead and two 6-on-5 goals against and a second and half away from closing out the series … sucks. It's brutal. We had a good group in there that played hard for one another all year, and there's no other words to really describe that one.' The Jets celebrate the game-tying goal. Jordan Binnington had 43 saves. stream sports and more with sling tv Sling Stream tonight's NHL playoff games (and every one that comes after) with Sling TV, which has every channel you'll need to tune in. Winnipeg won the franchise's first Presidents' Trophy with a 56-22-4 regular-season record and were the favorites against the eighth-seeded Blues — but were facing a first-round knockout for the third straight season.
