Bloomington fire to install SmartBurners to reduce cooking fires
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Bloomington Fire Department will install SmartBurner® technology in two housing properties on Tuesday.
Firefighters and volunteers with State Farm will install 58 sets of burners at the Sunnyside Apartments and the Mayor's Manor, Bloomington Fire spokesman Frank Friend said.
Cooking is one of the leading causes of residential fires in the U.S. and the Bloomington Fire Chief Cory Matheny said that part of their mission includes taking preventive steps like installing SmartBurners.
'SmartBurner® helps us significantly reduce cooking fire risks, especially in vulnerable housing environments where the risk is highest,' Matheny said.
The SmartBurner® can replace traditional coil stove top burners, and has temperature limiting technology that helps prevent high heat that could cause a house fire.
By installing the SmartBurner®, the Bloomington fire department hopes to reduce emergency calls to housing communities, protect vulnerable residents, and lower the long-term cost of fire damages and false alarms to the city and housing providers.
