SCEKL 2025 To Spotlight AI-driven Smart Cities
BUSINESS By Naveen Prabu & Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL 2025) will place a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI)-based urban solutions, to promote practical smart city adoption among Malaysian municipalities and the wider ASEAN region. Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) chief corporate officer Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid said the expo, hosted by the Digital Ministry and co-organised by DNB and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), is expected to attract 10,000 visitors and 2,000 delegates. 'The goal is to raise awareness of the next phase of smart city development, especially with AI. We want to ensure there is greater adoption of technology,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview. Ahmad Zaki said smart cities today are no longer limited to infrastructure upgrades, but increasingly depend on AI, digital twins, and high-speed connectivity to enable predictive planning, real-time services and automated operations. 'Smart cities have over 80 indicators. What's new now is how AI improves service delivery — like knowing exactly when a bus will arrive or using high-definition surveillance to improve safety,' he said. Ahmad Zaki highlighted that Malaysia's major cities, such as Kuala Lumpur and George Town, already have advanced command centres, while smaller cities can benefit from affordable solutions being showcased at the expo. Meanwhile, he said 'digital twin' technology, real-time monitoring systems, the role of 5G infrastructure, and real-time responsiveness are crucial to the improvement of Malaysian cities. Ahmad Zaki explained that real-time responsiveness is key for urban services like traffic management and port automation.

Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur to support Malaysia's 2040 Smart Nation agenda
KUALA LUMPUR: Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL25), the first Southeast Asian edition of the globally renowned Smart City Expo from Barcelona set to take place this September, aligns with Malaysia's aspiration to become a Smart Nation by 2040, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said SCEKL25 underscored Malaysia's leading role in advancing smart city development anchored by four strategic pillars, namely AI Cities, Sustainable and Resilient Cities, Digital Entrepreneurship and Economic Development and Community Empowerment through Digital Solutions. 'SCEKL25 represents a bold step forward in Malaysia's ambition to become a leading regional digital hub. It sets the stage for transformative conversations about the future of urban innovation,' he said in a statement. Earlier today, Gobind officially launched the 100-day countdown to the expo, which takes place from Sept 17 to 19. Themed 'AI Cities: Shaping Our Digital Future,' the expo highlights Malaysia's vision for smart, inclusive and sustainable cities. Commenting further, Gobind said that with ASEAN's digital economy on the cusp of exponential growth, the expo offered a unique platform to showcase cutting-edge technologies and foster meaningful dialogue on how AI and digital transformation would shape the cities of tomorrow. Meanwhile, in the same statement, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer (CEO) Anuar Fariz Fadzil echoed the sentiment, calling SCEKL25 a catalyst for the smart city revolution in Southeast Asia. He said the initiative reflected the nation's commitment to leading the region in building intelligent, inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities powered by AI, where technology empowers people and drives the next wave of urban transformation The expo, co-organised by the MDEC and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for the Ministry of Digital, will bring together global leaders, investors, tech innovators and policymakers to explore how AI and emerging technologies are reshaping urban life across ASEAN.

The ASEAN Summit on AI will take place from Aug 12 to Aug 13, while SCEKL2025 will be held from Sept 17 to Sept 19. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that, as the ASEAN Chair this year, Malaysia's hosting of SCEKL2025 reflected its commitment to shaping the future of urban innovation, not just for the nation but for the entire region. 'With both ecosystem and infrastructure in place, Malaysia is not only ready to host SCEKL25, we are ready to lead the development of AI Cities across ASEAN,' he told a press conference after officially launching the 100-day countdown to the SCEKL25 here today. Regarding the participation of ASEAN cities in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN), Gobind said that greater uptake among different countries is definitely part of the ongoing conversation within ASEAN member countries. The ASCN is a collaborative platform where cities from the 10 ASEAN Member States work towards the common goal of smart and sustainable urban development. The ASCN was established in 2018 with 26 pilot cities, and it has since expanded to 34 cities. As the ASEAN chair, Gobind added that Malaysia is actively advancing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), which aims to unlock US$2 trillion (US$1 = RM4.24) in digital economic potential by 2030 through cross-border investment, market access, and harmonised digital regulations. 'Hosting SCEKL25 is part of this broader leadership agenda. It positions Malaysia as a regional hub for smart city innovation, public-private collaboration, and inclusive digital development,' he added. SCEKL2025 is expected to bring together over 10,000 delegates, 300 exhibitors, and participants from more than 20 countries, serving as a platform for policy-to-project collaboration, investor engagement, technology showcases, and real-world urban solutions. 'We are proud to have the support of global brands such as Dell, Intel, Ericsson, and Huawei, as well as key associations including the Malaysia Smart Cities Alliance, Smart Cities Network, The Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology, and the Malaysia PropTech Association,' the minister added.

Digital Ministry developing Malaysia into a smart nation, says Gobind
GEORGE TOWN: The Digital Ministry is working towards developing Malaysia into a smart nation equipped with comprehensive digital infrastructure, said its minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said one of the main pillars in building a smart nation is to ensure that every state has smart city initiatives, with the ministry offering full support for these efforts. 'In addition to Penang, the Federal Territories, Johor, and Sarawak are also developing smart cities, and the ministry is monitoring these efforts to create a smart nation. We also hold meetings with state executive councillors every six months to provide input and updates on each state's progress. 'This is also to explore how collaborations can be enhanced to ensure continuous advancement,' he told reporters after making a working visit to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Smart Operation Centre at Komtar here today. Also present was Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran. Gobind further said that his ministry is responsible for ensuring that Malaysia's digital infrastructure is sufficient and capable of holistically supporting future technological needs so that no area is left behind in the digitalisation wave. He added, 'We want to build a smart nation... One of the key pillars of this development is ensuring that every state has a smart city initiative. With the emergence of new technologies, we will see even more advanced innovations moving forward.' Meanwhile, Gobind said Penang is edging closer to becoming Malaysia's first artificial intelligence (AI) city as various smart technologies are being integrated into urban administration and infrastructure. He noted that the use of AI technologies not only accelerates urban modernisation but also improves productivity, service efficiency, and the quality of life for the people through technology-driven solutions. Among the key projects implemented is an AI-based smart traffic management system designed to optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion in the city. According to Gobind, today's visit forms part of the preparations for the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL 2025), which will be held from September 17 to 19 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, jointly organised by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). On another matter, he urged all state governments to enact legislation similar to the Data Sharing Act 2024, which comes into effect today, to expand data-sharing initiatives nationwide. He said the Act enables data sharing among federal government agencies and paves the way for a broader data-sharing ecosystem involving the federal, state governments, and local authorities (PBT). The Act, he said, passed in Parliament last December, marks a major milestone as it establishes, for the first time, a legal mechanism for data sharing between departments and agencies at the federal level. Gobind said that for now, the Data Sharing Act 2024 applies only to ministries and federal agencies and does not yet involve state governments or PBTs but if all federal and state agencies adopt a uniform mechanism, it will create a strong national data ecosystem.
