Third annual pride weekend coming to Essex

Essex Junction, Vt (ABC22/FOX44) – The celebration is about to begin in Essex, Vermont – the 3rd annual pride weekend begins this evening and continues through Sunday. Kris Smith Thyme, president of Essex Pride, says they've expanded this year into a weekend-long celebration after a successful first two year. The fun begins at 6:30pm – you can head to Maple Street Park to join officials with Essex Pride in making signs for tomorrow's parade. To make it even more tempting, they will be plenty of garlic bread to go around. It'll be an action-packed Saturday, with events ranging from drag story hour and line dancing to an artists market and of course, the parade. The event wraps up on Sunday with a celebratory pride service at the First Congressional Church of Essex Junction. A new edition this year – Smith Thyme says they'll have a vigil honoring transgender individuals who lost their lives due to acts of violence. 'Pride is a party, it is so much a party,' Smith Thyme says, 'but it is also so much more than that. Creating those spaces where people can really let their guard down is really comforting in times like this. There may be awful things happening but we will protect and save each other – first and foremost.' Smith Thyme emphasizes that the parade is happening rain or shine, so if you plan on attending make sure to bring the rain jacket. You can find a full list of this weekends events here.
