Woman marries Welshman so Gavin & Stacey-loving friends plan iconic hen do
Woman marries Welshman so Gavin & Stacey-loving friends plan iconic hen do Nothing builds excitement much like a wedding, and the hen party forms a big part of the lead up to the big day. But, when you're marrying a Welshman, it would be rude not to reference Gavin & Stacey Joanna Page, who plays Stacey Shipman (left) and Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa Jenkins (right) during filming for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Day special (Image: PA ) Some may say there's nothing like marrying a Welshman. After all, us Welsh people are known for being friendly, welcoming and never being afraid of having a good time. However, one woman got the surprise of her life when her friends planned a very specific Wales-inspired hen party ahead of her big day - and it looked amazing. If you love Gavin & Stacey then you're in for a treat, as the brilliant hen do was basically a huge homage to the TV show - and it's fair to say you may never see this many "Nessas" is the same room ever again. A video of the hen party was shared on TikTok by Hannah Clarke and, in the words of Nessa, it looked immense. Captioned: "A the end of the day, right, she's marrying a Welshie", the video is a brilliant homage to the Welsh sitcom. All the guests at the hen are seen in full Nessa costume - from the black boots to the black bob and the dragon tattoos proudly displayed on their arms. The bride then appears to be dressed as "Smithy" going to the beach - in a T-shirt, swimming trunks and with a rubber ring around her waist. Many keen fans of the sitcom may remember that, in series three, Smithy heads to Barry Island beach with the gang to spend time with his son, Neil. He ends up getting the rubber ring stuck around his waist, which causes a few laughs. At the hen party, the guests are seen singing "Islands In The Stream", and smoking fake cigarettes to finish off the brilliant costumes. They looked like they had a brilliant time and, people have loved it so much, the clip has since gone viral - having pulled in over 90,000 views. A third replied: "Possibly the best thing I've ever seen." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "This is absolutely amazing. And please look at all those angels supporting the bride. Actually makes me a little emotional." Someone else also chimed in with: "Ok, so no lie, this is the best thing I've ever seen." Last night (Sunday, May 11), Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa Jenkins in Gavin & Stacey, won a Bafta at the TV Bafta Awards for her portrayal of the iconic character in the finale episode, which aired on Christmas Day last year. Breaking viewing records, the finale was watched by millions on Christmas Day 2024 - with even more people tuning in on catch-up. Ruth, from Bridgend, writes the series with James Corden, who plays Smithy in the hit show. Beginning her acceptance speech as Nessa, she said: "I'm not gonna lie, this is immense. I weren't expecting to win this, no way. "I've won a Bafta before, of course I have, in 1976. It was the Barry arcade fruity technician award and I was grateful for that but this, this is cracking." The actress went on to thank the cast, the director, the crew and production team and the BBC. She also gave James a special mention, and became very emotional, hinting that the pair might be working together again soon. Ruth added: "The person I would like to thank most is my dear, dear, talented, lovely, kind, funny friend, James Corden, with whom I have shared this astonishing journey with for the past 17 years and without whom Nessa Shenessa Jenkins would simply not exist. Ruth Jones teases new project with Gavin and Stacey co-creator James Corden
The Gavin & Stacey: The Finale star was overcome with emotion as she dedicated her Bafta win to James Corden, who co-created and co-starred in the show as Smithy Ruth Jones was ecstatic as she won a TV Bafta for her role as straight-talking Nessa in Gavin & Stacey: The Finale last night. The show, which has been watched by more than 20million viewers, had been snubbed in the main comedy category award and also lost out in the Memorable Moment category. But taking to the stage to collect her gong, Ruth went into character as she said: 'I'm not gonna lie, this is immense. I didn't expect to win this. I've won a Bafta before, of course I have, in 1976.' Thanking all the cast and crew, plus the BBC, she fought back tears as she added: 'The person I'd like to thank the most is my dear, talented, lovely, kind friend James Corden with whom I've shared this astonishing journey for the last 17 years. And without whom, Vanessa Shannessa Jenkins wouldn't exist. I love you James.' Danny Dyer was similarly overcome as he was named best comedy male for his role in Sky's Mr Bigstuff. Choking up he dedicated the gong to writer Ryan Sampson, saying: 'You won this for me mate.' Addressing his daughters Dani and Sunnie from the stage - and breaking the no swearing rule - the former EastEnder told them: 'Girls, I done it. I f***ing done it.' While there was joy for BBC drama Mr Loverman, which took two awards for main actors Lennie James and Ariyon Bakare, and also ITV 's Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, which won the limited drama category and also received a special award, many others came away empty handed. Apple+'s Slow Horses failed to land a gong despite a trio of nominations along with Disney +'s Rivals, which also had three. It was the same story for BBC1 's The Traitors, with no wins for the show in two categories and presenter Claudia Winkleman being beaten in the entertainment performance category by Joe Lycett. Netflix drama Baby Reindeer, nominated in four categories, found success thanks to Jessica Gunning taking the award for best supporting actress for her role as stalking Martha. Thanking her co-star Richard Gadd, who wrote the hard-hitting autobiographical drama, she used one of his nicknames as she said: 'Richard, you've changed my life with Baby Reindeer, happy birthday little Nipple.' In the reality category, the winner was Channel 4 's The Jury: Murder Trial, which re-enacted a real-life trial, with producer Ed Kellie saying: 'This proves that reality TV can actually be about something.' Collecting the gong for limited drama, Mr Bates producer Patrick Spences said: "We'd like to put on record that being trusted by the sub-postmasters to tell their story has been the greatest privilege of our lives.' And accepting the honour for commissioning the show in the first place, ITV managing director Kevin Lygo said it was a travesty that many of the 555 who lost their livelihoods and suffered for many years were still waiting for full justice. 'They still have not got their compensation so I say to whoever is in charge of that, will you hurry up and pay these people what they are due.' Lennie James was choked as he took the leading actor Bafta, thanking his co-star Ariyon Bakare, who won the best supporting actor, for being his 'TV lover'. The memorable moment award, the only gong to be voted for by the public, went to Strictly Come Dancing 's emotional performance by Dianne Buswell and Chris McCausland to You'll Never Walk Alone. The win means that the BBC ballroom show won a Bafta in its 20th anniversary year as it beat stiff competition from Gavin & Stacey, Traitors and Mr Bates, along with Rivals and Bridgerton. Collecting the award solo - because stand-up Chris was on stage - Dianne said Chris had sent a message for her to read out. In it, he quipped: 'After 22 years in comedy, I win a Bafta for dancing. Di, I'll take it, but please let them all know, it hurts.' It was also a good anniversary night for EastEnders, with boss Chris Clenshaw saying he was delighted for the soap to take the gong just as the show celebrates its 40th anniversary, laughing: 'It's back to the Queen Vic for a knees up!' Best drama went to BBC1's police series Blue Lights, set in Northern Ireland. Collecting the award, the producer said: 'Thank you to the people of our home city for letting us tell your stories. Belfast, this one's for you.'

Larry Lamb reveals two actors in Gavin & Stacey 'went rogue' and stormed off in the wedding scene during final episode
Larry Lamb has revealed that two actors objected to Smithy and Sonia getting married during Gavin and Stacey's Christmas special and stormed off the set during filming. The actor, 77, who plays Mick in the beloved show, has confessed that the scene of the famed final episode caused huge upset with unknowing extras who did not know what to do with the news. Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Larry explained the two actors 'had enough' and 'thought no he shouldn't'. He told Chris: 'When you're doing film and television it's all according to locations it's not at all according the clock or the calendar. 'So you can do jobs where you do the end on the first day because they could only get that location for that day but this they'd engineered it so we were going to be filming the last day on the last day, which was extraordinary, just amazing, but you still had to go through it and it got really, really emotional.' To which Chris replied: 'Of course you knew it was coming because you read the script 10 months ago, but your character can't know it's coming because that's not what happened. Larry said: 'You've got to live with it and watch all the extras sitting in the wedding scene, watching their faces because they didn't know anything about this. 'They're in there watching a wedding and all and so it's like, "what's going on here? Do we laugh? Do we cry? What are we supposed to do?" 'And they asked for people to stand up, two of the extras at the back, they just got up, they'd had enough, they thought, "no, he shouldn't". That was never written, they just thought, "no he shouldn't".' The Christmas special and finale came five years after the show's last Christmas instalment in 2019. It was hailed 'perfect' by viewers, who were left in tears as the long-running show finally aired its last episode after 17 years. While fans tuned into the episode to see whether Smithy had accepted Nessa's proposal from the 2019 Christmas Special, a five-year time jump revealed that he was indeed set to tie the knot, but all was not as it seemed. It was revealed that Smithy had instead got engaged to his girlfriend Sonia, who failed to impress the Shipman/West clan when she met them in the last festive episode. Fans were also treated to the surprise return of Sheridan Smith as Smithy's sister Rudi, and Pam Ferris as his mum Cath. Yet when it came to Smithy's big day he realised that Nessa was his one true love and called off the wedding. The entire family jumped into Dave's coach and rushed to Southampton, where Nessa was preparing to set sail, and in a scene 17 years in the making, he declared his love for her, and asked her to reconsider leaving. While an ever-stoic Nessa insisted she wouldn't propose to Smithy again, instead he returned her offer from five years earlier, finally getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. The episode then cut to Smithy and Nessa exchanging their vows at long last in an intimate ceremony in Barry, with the series ending with an emotional montage of the family marking the occasion at The Dolphin pub, before posing for a family snap together. Larry's appearance on Virgin Radio comes after his latest role has been revealed following the final episode of Gavin and Stacey. The actor reprised his role as Gavin's dad, Mick Shipman, for the feature-length festive special on Christmas Day that concluded the BBC series 17 years after it first hit screens. He is now set for a very different role as he stars as a pub garden weatherman in new advertisements for Greene King pubs. Larry will be presenting The Sipping Forecast a weather report designed to help punters navigate the unpredictable spring conditions. This April, he will deliver special broadcasts to ensure Brits are prepared for pub garden season, come wind, rain, or shine. This April, he will deliver special broadcasts to ensure Brits are prepared for pub garden season, come wind, rain, or shine. In new photos, ahead of the ad, the actor is seen in a colourful Hawaiian shirt before changing into a green rain coat. Greene King Pubs is giving away 100,000 free pints as part of its When It Rains, We Pour initiative. The first raindrops detected between 3-10 April will unlock the UK's biggest round of pints — so pub-goers can claim a drink on the house.
