Don Davis responds to Snow Hill police disbandment

SNOW HILL, N.C. (WNCT) — Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) released the following statement after the decision by Snow Hill commissioners to disband the Snow Hill Police Department: 'Nearly 15 years ago, the Snow Hill Police Department was formed to improve public safety, protect residents, and allow everyone to feel more secure in their homes, businesses, and neighborhoods. Dedicated police officers on patrol enforce the law, foster trust within the community, and promote a sense of pride. I strongly urge town officials to reverse course, reconsider their decision, and keep the Snow Hill Police Department intact.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Snow Hill leaders confirm police department not shutting down yet, future vote possible

SNOW HILL, N.C. (WNCT) — A lot of speculation was coming out of Greene County Monday, May 12, 2025, about the town of Snow Hill being in danger of losing its police department. 'We have not voted to shut down the police department,' Snow Hill Mayor Dennis Liles said. 'We have not voted on a budget for the upcoming fiscal year yet.' At a meeting Monday night, Mayor Liles quickly put that speculation to rest but said there is sill a strong possibility a vote could come in the near future. The board is discussing eliminating the department and paying the Greene County Sheriff's Office to provide 24/7 watch. People living in Snow Hill said it's a safety concern. 'Like everyone else, I got concerns with safety for us,' Sean Sexton said. 'I can't see a better use of the money than having our own local police department.' The department is asking for more than an 11 percent increase to help with salaries and wages. The Town of Snow Hill would have to pay $270,000 to contract the Greene County Sheriff's Office, which would save the city $230,000. But, some people who live in the town said you can't put a price tag on the service the officers provide. 'I've seen these officers off duty at school events, supporting families that are not their own, that they've met working here,' Courtney Harrell said. 'They do Trunk-or-Treats, they do all kinds of things for this town that they're not being paid to do.' If the town does vote to dissolve the department and pay the sheriff's office, they would be provided with a deputy dedicated to Snow Hill at all hours. The police officers currently with the department would also be offered positions in the sheriff's office. The board members are expected to discuss the topic again at the next board meeting on June 9th and the town must finalize the budget by June 30th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
