Girl, so surprising: pop star Lorde stuns fans by crashing theme party

New Zealand pop star Lorde has sent fans into a spin by crashing a club night party in her honour. Sydney venue Mary's Underground hosted a night dedicated to 'our true Lorde and saviour' on May 25 with a room full of Lorde fans flooding the dancefloor before the surprise guest arrived. Lorde reportedly snuck onto the dancefloor in disguise, but it wasn't long until her fans realised that she was in their midst. The Grammy-winner jumped behind the decks with Sugarush DJ Emma Parke, singing along to her new release What Was That and her collaboration with Charli XCX, Girl, So Confusing. Ms Parke was "still in disbelief" over the pop star's surprise appearance, saying the night was one that she would be talking about for years to come. "After years of throwing events, this was one of the most rewarding nights of my life. Completely unmatched," she said on May 26. It was reportedly Lorde's idea to crash the event, as she prepares to release a new album, Virgin, on June 27. Lorde Makes Candid Comments About Her Gender Identity And Feeling Somewhere 'In The Middle'

Lorde has spoken candidly about her changing feelings towards her gender identity. Earlier this month, the What Was That singer was among the guests at this year's Met Gala, and made an interesting comment about her outfit while speaking to Vogue on the red carpet. Describing the ensemble as 'something of an Easter egg', she said: 'More will be revealed. But I just love the [outfit's] open back. To me, it really represents where I'm at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman.' "This is my creation. it's something of an easter egg, more will be revealed, but I just love the open back, to me it really represents where I'm at gender wise. I feel like a man AND a woman"— Lorde talking to Emma Chamberlain at the Met — Lorde Updates 🧬⛓️ (@LordeUpdatesBR) May 6, 2025 Lorde elaborated more on this during an interview in Rolling Stone magazine published on Thursday. Describing herself as 'in the middle gender-wise', she revealed that her friend, fellow singer Chappell Roan, recently asked her whether this meant she identifies as non-binary. 'I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man',' she explained. 'I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.' Reflecting on the current hardships faced by transgender and other gender non-conforming people, Lorde added: 'I don't think that [my identity] is radical, to be honest. I see these incredibly brave young people, and it's complicated. 'Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I'm not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I'm, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman.' Per Rolling Stone, Virgin's opening song sees Lorde once again contemplating her gender identity, including one line on which she sings: 'Some days I'm a woman, some days I'm a man.' The collection also contains another song called Man Of The Year, which came about as Lorde tried to envisage a version of herself 'that was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment'. supports anyone affected by gender identity | 01527 894 838 offers information, support, friendship and shared experiences for young people with gender identity issues | 0208 1234819 is the largest youth and community-based organisation for LGBT people in Scotland. Lorde Says Her New Era Will Change Everything: ‘This Is Gonna Be Crazy, You Have No Idea'

Before Lorde returned with Solar Power in 2021, she launched a newsletter to keep fans up to date with what was going on in her life at the time and how it was inspiring the music she was creating to follow up her opus Melodrama. Recently, the musician has been checking in again as she prepares for the launch of her fourth album. Only this time, she's supplementing her newsletter with a texting service that connects her directly to her fans and allows them to respond as though they had her actual number. 'I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change and these are really the last moments where it's just us, which is crazy but so right,' Lorde said in her first message to them earlier this week. 'I'm so ready. I didn't know if I'd ever be able to say that, but I am. I'm so thankful for your patience. I've felt your love, I've felt you right there. This is gonna be crazy, you have no idea.' More from Rolling Stone Lorde Really Likes This Fancy Water Bottle Lorde Has Some New Music She'd Like to Share Dua Lipa Continues Cover Series in New Zealand With Luxury Lorde Hit 'Royals' Talk about giving new meaning to her 'Girl, So Confusing' remix verse, where she sings: 'Well, honestly, I was speechless when I woke up to your voice note.' She performed the remix with Charli XCX at Coachella, making a surprise appearance during the Brat musician's set. 'I could feel it behind me and I was walking out over to the stage at dusk, thinking about all the Coachellas that I've been at across 12 years and just thinking about how it's this thing that can really make you lose yourself,' Lorde said. It's so crazy and it's all these people around. But I felt so real and so solid. I can just feel all that I have kind of shed to be able to be in this the way I am right now. I was like, 'It's dusk in the desert. Fucking enjoy it, bitch.'' Lorde is basking in the freedom that comes with having lifted a weight off her shoulders. Last week, she previewed her forthcoming album on TikTok with a snippet from what is believed to be the first single. 'It was cool going into it having this little taste out, this 15 seconds,' she said about her appearance at Coachella, knowing this little moment of music is out in the world. On the song, she sings: 'Since I was 17/I gave you everything/Now we wake from a dream/Well baby, what was that?' (On Wednesday, she revealed the name of her upcoming new single, 'What Was That,' and wrote that it will be 'out soon' along with sharing a pre-save link.) Even the off-the-cuff TikTok, which finds her filming herself while strutting through New York's Washington Square Park, aligns with her weightless approach to this new era. She isn't abandoning her newsletter now that she has the messaging thread, but there's less overthinking involved in shooting off a quick text or voice note. 'I'm in the zone, not wanting to think too hard about how to communicate,' Lorde said. 'I don't want to be stressing about capturing the moment with the right language. What if it's just about saying it, maybe getting it wrong, and that being okay?' Lorde Explains How Charli XCX's ‘Brat' Gave Her ‘a Kick' to Finish New Album ‘Virgin'

Lorde and Charli XCX. - Credit: Marc Piasecki/WireImage; Katja Ogrin/Redferns/Getty Images Brat was Rolling Stone's album of the year for 2024, and judging from what Lorde has been saying about Charli XCX's record, it was probably hers, too. 'I'd been trying to express [myself] in this naked way, and then Brat came out, and she was kind of doing that from the other side of the coin almost,' Lorde told BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday. The whole album became something like a revelation to the artist. 'Brat coming out really gave me a kick in a lot of ways,' Lorde said. 'It forced me to further define what I was doing [with Virgin], because Charli had so masterfully defined everything about Brat, and I knew that what I was doing was very distinct to that.' More from Rolling Stone Lorde and Charli XCX collaborated on a remix of Brat's 'Girl, So Confusing,' a song that fans decided hinted at jealousy Charli felt for Lorde. It came out on the expanded reissue, Brat and It's Completely Different but Also Still Brat. In the final chorus, Lorde exclaims, 'I ride for you, Charli.' Lorde told the BBC she appreciated the vulnerability of making the remix, which gave her a new perspective on her own music. They performed the song together in April at Coachella. 'It's an amazing thing when a peer throws the gauntlet down like that,' Lorde said. 'You're like, 'OK, I've got to pick it up.' I've spoken to a lot of peers who've all had the same feeling.' The same day, Lorde announced she would be releasing Virgin on June 27. She described her album, which will feature the guests Dev Hynes, Daniel Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, and Buddy Ross, as '100% written in blood.' She has not announced any further collaborations with Charli XCX. Best of Rolling Stone Sign up for RollingStone's Newsletter. For the latest news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
