Karnataka Caste Census U-Turn Sparks Row; SDPI Terms Move a ‘Betrayal' of Backward Classes
Bengaluru: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government for its decision to scrap the caste census conducted in 2015, terming the move a 'betrayal' of the state's backward classes, Dalits, SC/STs, and minorities. The original survey, conducted by the Kempanna Commission, involved 1.6 lakh government officials and cost the exchequer ₹165 crore. Though the final report was submitted earlier this year, the government has now declared it unusable on grounds of 'inaccuracy' and 'outdated data.' Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instead ordered a new caste census, to be completed in 90 days. Calling the explanation 'vague and unconvincing,' SDPI accused the Congress of succumbing to pressure from dominant caste leaders, particularly from the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, who, the party alleges, have no strong electoral loyalty to Congress. 'Those who stood with the Congress since its inception are now being ignored,' SDPI said, demanding a judicial inquiry into the failure of the previous survey and the immediate public release of the report. 'Public money and administrative resources are not meant for political experiments,' the party added, reaffirming its commitment to the cause of genuine social justice and transparency.

Truck driver killed in Mangaluru, authorities clamp down to curb communal tensions
Tensions remained high in parts of Dakshina Kannada on Wednesday, a day after the brutal killing of a 35-year-old pickup truck driver, Abdul Raheem, also known as Imtiyaz, near Bantwal. The murder has ignited a wave of communal unrest, prompting the district administration to enforce prohibitory measures across multiple taluks to prevent any escalation. Also Read - Former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy shifted to Bengaluru central prison The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a construction site near Ira Kodi, where Raheem was reportedly unloading sand from a pickup vehicle. According to police sources, a group of armed men allegedly attacked him with swords, leading to fatal injuries. Another person was also wounded in the assault and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The attack, widely condemned online, has sparked communal outrage, especially after allegations surfaced that Raheem's murder may have been in retaliation for the recent killing of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty. This narrative has gained traction on social media, where users have drawn connections between both incidents and accused authorities of failing to prevent targeted violence. Crowds gathered in large numbers outside Mangaluru's Highland Hospital on Tuesday evening before Raheem's body was transferred to Yenepoya Hospital for post-mortem examination. In response to the unrest, the district administration swiftly imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Samhita, restricting public gatherings in Bantwal, Puttur, Belthangady, Sullia, and Kadaba taluks until 6 PM on May 30. Additionally, separate curbs have been put in place within Mangaluru taluk under the jurisdiction of the city police commissioner. Also Read - Kamal Haasan's 'Kannada was born out of Tamil' comment sparks huge political outrage ahead of film release Leaders from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) have alleged that Raheem's murder was both pre-planned and motivated by hate. Speaking to reporters outside Yenepoya Hospital, SDPI district president Anwar Sadath described Raheem as a dedicated worker with no links to political outfits. 'He was tricked into coming to the site under the guise of work and then ambushed by men linked to right-wing groups,' Sadath claimed. He further cited multiple online threats targeting the Muslim community in the wake of Shetty's killing and criticised law enforcement for failing to act decisively. 'Over 45 FIRs were registered against individuals who issued open threats, yet only a handful of arrests have been made,' he said. SDPI has demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a transparent and thorough probe.

No Pakistan slogan angle found in mob lynching case in Mangaluru: Top cop
No case has been registered in connection with the alleged pro-Pakistani slogans raised which reportedly resulted in the mob lynching incident on the outskirts of Mangaluru, city's police commissioner Anupam Agarwal said on Thursday, adding that there is no credible evidence to support the claim. 'Since we do not have any concrete evidence that pro-Pakistani slogans were raised, no FIR has been registered in this regard,' Agarwal said, even as political debates intensified over the motive behind the murder of a 38-year-old migrant worker from Kerala during a cricket match in Kudupu on April 27. The man was allegedly assaulted by a mob following a dispute with players and spectators. Three personnel from Mangaluru Rural police station — inspector Shivakumar KR, Head Constable Chandra P, and Constable Yallalinga — were suspended for dereliction of duty after it emerged that they failed to respond to distress calls and did not register a case under appropriate provisions. The suspension of the three officers came after Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao wrote to home minister G Parameshwara, urging disciplinary action. According to the initial first information report (FIR), the assault was reportedly provoked by slogans perceived to be in support of Pakistan. The victim succumbed to his injuries a day later. The incident was initially booked as an 'unnatural death' despite visible injuries on the victim's body. 'The police officer and constables did not understand the severity of the case and failed to register an FIR under charges of murder. The inspector merely registered a case of unnatural death despite the body having severe wound marks,' Agarwal said. The attack came to light after a resident named Deepak alerted police about a group of people assaulting a man at the cricket ground. However, the call failed to elicit an adequate response. The victim remained unidentified for two days until the post-mortem confirmed death due to homicidal injuries, prompting police to reclassify the case as murder. The case has since been registered under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with murder committed by a group of five or more persons. The main accused, identified as Sachin from Kudupu, is in police custody. 'If proved, the accused, either individually or as a group, can face life imprisonment or even the death penalty,' said Agarwal. The incident took a political turn, with Mangaluru North MLA Y Bharat Shetty alleging that the man was attacked for raising pro-Pakistan slogans and accusing opposition leaders of politicising the matter. 'This is a crime; don't do politics in it,' he said. 'They have accused BJP workers of murder while tying religion and caste to the case.' Police, however, have not linked the accused to any political outfit. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Mangaluru unit president Jaleel Krishnapura dismissed the pro-Pakistan slogan claim as false. 'The state home minister, G Parameshwara, should resign from his post for saying chanting pro-Pak slogans led to murder,' he said. Chief minister Siddaramaiah condemned the killing on Wednesday and said: 'Raising pro-Pakistan slogans is sedition and it's an offence.' At the same time, he confirmed the arrest of 23 people in connection with the case and promised strict action against the accused.
