Tatler reveals ‘No 1 couple to have at your dinner table'

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been crowned by Tatler as the 'most socially significant people' in the country. The royal couple were named number one in the magazine's annual Social Power Index of 100 Britons, ahead of Sir David Attenborough and the Beckhams. The society bible described the Prince and Princess as 'dream dinner guests', adding there was 'much to admire about the royal couple'. 'Top billing goes to the Prince and Princess of Wales, future rulers of this sceptred isle – and dream dinner guests,' it said. The magazine praised the Princess, 43, for the 'grace and grit displayed' after her cancer diagnosis in March last year. It also hailed the couple's 'passions', listing amongst them nature, tennis and William's outspoken admiration for Aston Villa, his favourite football team. 'They will have a kingdom to run in due course, which makes them the No 1 couple to have at your table,' the magazine added. British and Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje and his model and artist wife Mimi came second, with Itoje praised for his rugby achievements, his poetry writing, passion for art, and for appearing on a previous Tatler cover. Elsewhere, former England men's football captain Sir David Beckham and his fashion designer wife Lady Victoria Beckham were named in fifth place. Listing the couple's upcoming projects, such as Lady Beckham's Netflix documentary, and Sir David's recent knighthood award, Tatler concluded: 'Brand Beckham just grows and grows'. Other famous names included naturalist Sir David Attenborough, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who was singled out for his karaoke performances, Industry star Marisa Abela and The Crown actor Dominic West. Sir David Attenborough, 99, has enjoyed a close working relationship with Prince William, who recently said he wished to emulate the wildlife broadcaster and national treasure with a new documentary series about rangers. The pair also joined forces earlier this month to lead an urgent global call to save the world's oceans 'while we still have the chance'. Both have come to recognise that in order to stabilise the climate, the focus must be on the world's delicate marine ecosystems. Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales's place at number one on the index comes after they were also named in Time magazine's inaugural Time100 philanthropy list. The couple were named last month alongside 'the most influential people shaping the future of giving', which similarly included Sir David Beckham. The Prince and Princess, whose primary charitable work is under the umbrella of the Royal Foundation, were recognised for 'aligning social imperatives with sound business strategies and building corporate alliances to expand their reach'. Elsewhere in the accompanying description, Time said the couple were 'less concerned with cultural preservation and more attuned to social issues', suggesting that 'priorities have shifted' in how the Royal family conducts philanthropy. Tatler's full Social Power Index is available in the August issue of the magazine, released on Thursday July 3.
