Through Tough Times, Traditional Woodblock Printers Keep Practicing Their Art; Division of Labor Remains The Same as in The Edo Period

NHK's taiga historical drama 'Unbound,' which depicts the life of Tsutaya Juzaburo, an exceptional publisher who discovered genius painters such as Kitagawa Utamaro and Toshusai Sharaku, is attracting a great deal of attention. In the program's story, elegant ukiyo-e woodblock prints have a major presence. The rich expression of this art form, which flourished thanks to technological innovation during the Edo period (1603-1867), continues to fascinate people in Japan and abroad. The Yomiuri Shimbun Noriyasu Soda, a woodblock printer at Takahashi Kobo studio in Tokyo, holds a finished woodblock print. Ukiyo-e images, which started as illustrations for books, came to be produced as independent works in the early Edo period. At first they were only in black and white, but as their subjects expanded to include beautiful women and kabuki actors, the process of making them evolved to include layering several colors and eventually reached the level of high-quality multicolor printing. The works became meticulously detailed and vividly colorful, as well as reasonably priced. The production process, which captured the hearts of the common people, was supported by a division of labor that continues to this day. On the second floor of Takahashi Kobo studio in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, which was established around the end of the Edo period, woodblock printer Noriyasu Soda, 41, applied pigments to woodblocks with a brush and then rubbed the colors into the washi paper with a rubbing pad. He layered several colors, including indigo, yellow and black, to complete a print of Katsushika Hokusai's 'Under the Wave off Kanagawa,' from the series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.' 'While making sure not to erase the quality of the carving, it is important to rub in [colors] in a way that suits each work, such as making the best use of the space around Mt. Fuji,' Soda said. The painter, who draws rough sketches; the carver, who carves woodblocks; and the printer, who layers colors onto the woodblock base, work as a team to create each image. At the center of their group is the publisher, who organizes artisans such as Soda and takes charge of planning and securing sales channels. The Yomiuri Shimbun Yukiko Takahashi 'Edo woodblock prints convey an impression of refinement. The techniques cannot be acquired overnight, but our artisans, who in their 40s are at their prime, are working hard,' said Yukiko Takahashi, 80, the sixth-generation representative of the studio. Takahashi also works as a publisher and printer. With the dawn of the Meiji era (1868-1912), however, ukiyo-e gradually declined due to the introduction of technology from overseas that enabled high-speed and mass printing. Although those within the industry tried to find ways to cope with the new age through methods such as selling their art as luxury goods, the demand was not as strong as it had been in the past, and the situation remained difficult. This was still the case in 1992, when craftsmen and producers of materials and tools established a group, now called the Tokyo Traditional Woodblock Print Association, to pass on their skills and secure materials. The masterpieces produced with the passed-down techniques were designated by the government as a traditional craft called Edo Woodblock Prints in 2007. The Yomiuri Shimbun Works produced by Takahashi Kobo Although conditions for the industry remain difficult for reasons such as a decrease in the number of craftsmen, there are some positive signs, such as the attention paid to woodblock prints by celebrities from abroad. In response to an increasing number of inquiries from overseas tourists after the end of the coronavirus pandemic, the studio began holding hands-on workshops. It is also producing characters for confectionery manufacturers and manga, as well as works designed by internationally renowned artists. 'Even during the Edo period, craftsmen made products based on what was in vogue. We would like to pass on this tradition to the next generation, while nurturing younger artisans,' said Takahashi, who also serves as president of the woodblock print association.

Tata Chemicals Q4 results: Net loss of ₹67 cr, income dips at ₹3,589 cr

Tata Chemicals Ltd on Wednesday reported a consolidated net loss from continuing operations at Rs 67 crore for the quarter ended March. Its net loss stood at Rs 818 crore in the year-ago period. Total income fell marginally to Rs 3,551 crore in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal from Rs 3,589 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, according to a regulatory filing. During 2024-25 fiscal, the company's net profit declined to Rs 354 crore from Rs 449 crore in the preceding year. Total income also declined to Rs 15,112 crore last fiscal from Rs 15,707 crore in 2023-24. Commenting on the results, R. Mukundan, Managing Director & CEO, Tata Chemicals, said, "Market conditions remain challenging even as India continues to grow while China, US and Western Europe are witnessing slight declines due to reduced demand for flat and container glass. In other regions, Asia (excluding China and India) and Americas (excluding USA) demand is robust, while slight decline is observed in demand of Africa, he added. "Though demand-supply balance softens, tariff uncertainties will continue to weigh on market, medium- and long-term outlook remains positive driven by sustainability trends," Mukundan said. The company's overall performance is lower compared to Q4FY24, mainly due to pricing pressure in all geographies, he said. Tata Chemical said its loss after tax (before exceptional items and NCI) from continuing operations at Rs 12 crore during January-March quarter compared to Rs 145 crore in the year-ago period. "Soda Ash unit in Lostock, UK ceased its operations from early February 2025, resulting in an additional exceptional charge of Rs 55 crore," it said. During 2024-25, the company's profit after tax (before exceptional items and NCI) from continuing operations stood at Rs 479 crore. "Exceptional charge of Rs 125 crore consisting of estimated expenses related to employee termination benefits, decommissioning of plant and machinery, and other closure-related incidental expenses, in relation to cessation of Soda ash production at the Lostock plant in Northwich, UK," it added. A part of over USD 165 billion Tata Group, Tata Chemicals Limited, is a leading supplier to glass, detergent, industrial and chemical sectors. The company has a strong presence in the crop protection business through its subsidiary company, Rallis India Ltd.

Nobiesse Expands Clean Skincare Line with Deodorant Sampler Bundle

Nobiesse introduces a Deodorant Sampler Bundle, offering aluminum-free, fragrance-free options to meet the growing demand for non-toxic skincare. PORTLAND, OR, UNITED STATES, March 21, 2025 / / -- Nobiesse, a leader in non-toxic personal care, announces the availability of its Deodorant Sampler Bundle, providing consumers an opportunity to explore multiple formulations of its aluminum-free, fragrance-free deodorant collection. Designed to offer reliable odor protection without synthetic additives, the bundle reflects the brand's commitment to clean, skin-friendly alternatives in daily personal care. A Growing Demand for Non-Toxic, Fragrance-Free Deodorants Consumer awareness of toxic ingredients in personal care has increased significantly in recent years. Studies and dermatologists have raised concerns about aluminum compounds, artificial fragrances, parabens, and phthalates—common ingredients found in traditional deodorants and antiperspirants. These chemicals have been linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and allergic reactions, prompting a shift towards healthier alternatives. The Nobiesse Deodorant Sampler Bundle responds to this evolving demand, offering an aluminum-free, fragrance-free, and skin-safe alternative. With a carefully curated selection of natural deodorants, the bundle allows consumers to explore effective odor protection without exposure to synthetic chemicals that may cause irritation. What Sets Nobiesse Deodorants Apart? Unlike conventional deodorants, which often mask odor with synthetic fragrances, Nobiesse deodorants use natural odor-neutralizing ingredients such as: Nordic Barley – Soothes sensitive skin and helps absorb moisture naturally. Baking Soda – A natural odor eliminator, commonly used in fragrance-free deodorants for its effectiveness. Arrowroot Powder – Absorbs excess moisture, helping keep underarms dry throughout the day. Cocoa Butter & Squalane – Nourish the skin, preventing irritation and dryness. With these ingredients, Nobiesse's deodorant formulas work with the body's natural processes, rather than blocking perspiration with artificial compounds. Understanding the Importance of Fragrance-Free Deodorants Fragrances in personal care products can be a hidden source of irritation and allergens. Many artificial scents contain phthalates and undisclosed chemical blends, which may trigger: Skin Sensitivities – Many individuals experience redness, itching, or irritation from artificial fragrance compounds. Hormonal Disruptions – Studies suggest that certain fragrance chemicals may affect endocrine function. Allergic Reactions & Respiratory Issues – Strong synthetic fragrances can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory discomfort for sensitive individuals. As awareness of these concerns grows, more consumers—especially those with sensitive skin and allergies—are turning to fragrance-free personal care. Why a Deodorant Sampler Bundle? The Nobiesse Deodorant Sampler Bundle is designed to help users find the right formula for their unique needs. Instead of committing to a full-sized deodorant, customers can test different versions to determine which works best for their skin and lifestyle. This approach addresses a common challenge for consumers switching to natural, aluminum-free deodorants. Transitioning from traditional antiperspirants to natural deodorants often involves an adjustment period, as the body eliminates built-up toxins from years of conventional product use. A sampler bundle offers flexibility and customization, allowing users to gradually explore different formulas without waste. Men's Skincare and the Role of Deodorants Men's skincare is evolving beyond facial care to include full-body wellness. Many men are now seeking health-conscious personal care solutions, recognizing that deodorant is not just about odor control but also about skin health. Harsh ingredients in many mass-market deodorants can cause: Clogged Pores & Bumps – Aluminum-based antiperspirants block sweat glands, leading to ingrown hairs and breakouts. Underarm Discoloration – Chemicals in conventional deodorants may contribute to the darkening of the underarms. Irritation After Shaving – Alcohol-based or synthetic deodorants can cause burning, stinging, and redness post-shave. By switching to a natural, fragrance-free, and non-toxic formula, men can improve their skin health while maintaining odor control. Nobiesse's bundle offers a tailored approach, ensuring that men can find the best formulation for their skincare needs. Sustainability and Ethical Commitment As part of its sustainability mission, Nobiesse ensures that its products are: Aluminum-Free & Non-Toxic – Free from synthetic chemicals that may pollute waterways after rinsing off the skin. Cruelty-Free & Vegan – No animal testing, no animal-derived ingredients. Eco-Conscious Packaging – Designed with minimal environmental impact, reducing plastic waste. The brand's ethical approach aligns with the growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible skincare. With the Deodorant Sampler Bundle, Nobiesse extends its clean beauty philosophy to personal hygiene products. The Clean Beauty Market and Nobiesse's Role The clean beauty industry has expanded rapidly, with consumers prioritizing ingredient transparency and health-conscious formulations. According to market research, the global natural deodorant market is projected to grow significantly, driven by: Rising awareness of chemical sensitivities Increased preference for plant-based and cruelty-free products Growing male skincare and grooming sector Nobiesse stands at the forefront of this shift, offering luxury clean beauty solutions backed by science and high-performance natural ingredients. Where to Buy the Nobiesse Deodorant Sampler Bundle The Deodorant Sampler Bundle is available for purchase at Nobiesse website. This bundle provides an accessible entry point for consumers transitioning to natural deodorants, helping them make informed choices before committing to a full-sized product. MISD student to participate in international space program

Feb. 25—MIDLAND — Yuki Soda, a junior at Legacy High School, has been selected to attend the International Science School (ISS) in Australia this summer. This program brings together approximately 150 students from around the world every other year to engage in advanced STEM learning experiences. Soda is one of only five students from the United States chosen for this opportunity, selected through Higher Orbits' Go For Launch! program. Soda's passion for space and engineering began in eighth grade when his science teacher encouraged him to participate in Go For Launch! Since then, he has participated three times, further developing his interest in STEM fields and space-related opportunities. Go For Launch!, supported by the Midland Development Corporation and Chevron, provides students with opportunities to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills to solve real-world aerospace challenges. Soda decided to apply for ISS after speaking to LHS alumna Brianna Ortiz, who was selected for the program in 2023. The rigorous application process required him to submit four letters of recommendation and complete six essays outlining his interests and inspirations. "I'm looking forward to meeting students from around the world, engaging in enhanced academic experiences, and having the chance to interact with experts who lead the program's lectures," he said. ISS is a program of the University of Sydney that provides students with the opportunity to collaborate with peers on scientific projects, attend lectures from distinguished scientists, and participate in hands-on STEM activities. Soda, who also runs a side business as a photographer and serves as editor in chief of the student newspaper, is eager to apply the knowledge gained from this experience to his future studies. He plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in a STEM field and is considering a law degree that would allow him to integrate his engineering expertise into legal applications. He will leave for his three-week adventure in Australia July 2.
