Beauty in chaos: Japanese hail Hong Kong's Kowloon Walled City film exhibition
Published: 12:00pm, 23 Feb 2025 Japanese visitors are among thousands of people caught up in a wave of nostalgia and flocking to an exhibition linked to the Hong Kong box office hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. The martial arts action film set in the 1980s earned 100 million yen (US$666,900) in three weeks after opening in Japan on January 17, making it the highest-grossing Hong Kong film there in five years. Directed by Soi Cheang Pou-soi and starring Louis Koo Tin-lok and Sammo Hung Kam-bo, the film follows a troubled mainland Chinese migrant caught between rival gangs in the Kowloon Walled City, a densely populated enclave notorious for illegal structures and criminal activities before it was torn down in the mid-1990s. The blockbuster grossed HK$107 million (US$13.8 million) in Hong Kong after its release last year, putting it in third place among the best-performing locally made films of all time after last year's A Guilty Conscience and 2023's The Last Dance . Since the middle of December, an immersive exhibition at the Airside shopping centre in Kai Tak, near the location of the original walled city, has brought the film sets to life, allowing visitors to get a feel for the enclave. Japanese tourists were among the 180,000 people who have visited the exhibition since it opened on December 16, according to the Tourism Board, which is hoping more locally made films will boost overall arrival numbers.

Bring on ‘Japanese craze' for Hong Kong films: Kowloon Walled City movie director
The director of Hong Kong blockbuster Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has said he wants to see more of the city's films benefit from the buzz being generated in Japan around his action epic. Soi Cheang Pou-soi voiced his hopes after the film, set in the infamous Kowloon Walled City, earned 100 million yen (US$656,980) three weeks into its release in Japan, making it the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie in the country in five years. 'Of course, I am thrilled to hear that the movie has received great enthusiasm outside Hong Kong. I believe it can be attributed to the fact that the film is based on a comic book with a flavour that Japanese audiences find familiar,' he told the Post. 'Also the expression of the passion for the walled city and the strong friendship we have are also the reasons behind their love for the movie. They have long been fascinated by this unique place, as evident in many online games using the walled city as a theme.' Earnings for the film reached 100 million yen in Japan last week, according to an official social media page for the production. The feature was released on January 17 in Japan. The movie, featuring acclaimed actor Louis Koo and rising star Terrance Lau Chun-him, brought in HK$108 million (US$13.9 million) in Hong Kong between May 1 and November 8, making it the second-highest-grossing film in the city last year.

Kowloon Walled City action movie sets record for Hong Kong film in Japan
Hong Kong's blockbuster action epic Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has made 100 million yen (HK$5.1 million) three weeks into its release in Japan, making it the highest-grossing film from the city in the country in five years. The success also served as a reminder to think of ways to go international, they said. According to the official Facebook page for the movie, earnings had reached 100 million yen since it was released in Japan on January 17. 'It's truly a rare and precious achievement to become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film in Japan in the last five years,' the post said. 'We are proud and grateful for the Japanese audience's love for this film.' The film directed by Soi Cheang Pou-soi and featuring acclaimed actor Louis Koo and rising star Terrance Lau Chun-him earned HK$108 million in the city from May 1 to November 8, becoming the second-highest-grossing film last year. Combining kung fu and nostalgia for the city's infamous Kowloon Walled City that was demolished in 1994, the neo-noir action thriller created a sensation upon its release It will represent Hong Kong at this year's Oscars.
