On This Date: A Once-Forgotten May Hurricane Struck Florida
A Civil War hurricane once made landfall in Florida before hurricane season started, and it wasn't widely known until a 21st century study brought it to light. On May 28, 1863, 162 years ago today, a Category 2 hurricane slammed ashore near Apalachicola, Florida. This is the first known May U.S. hurricane landfall on record. That was almost two weeks earlier than Hurricane Alma, which also made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on June 9, 1966, the next earliest U.S. hurricane landfall. The hurricane claimed 72 lives in Florida and another 38 lives at sea aboard the vessel Soler two days before landfall. A 2013 study by Michael Chenoweth and C.J. Mock rediscovered this once-forgotten Civil War-era U.S. hurricane. Poring through ship records, including those from the Union Navy blockading the Gulf Coast, as well as local newspaper accounts and other weather records, the study found a tropical storm formed on May 25, then turned north as a hurricane beginning on May 27, before its May 28 sunrise landfall. The hurricane was named "Amanda" after a Union ship driven ashore. According to the study, acting Volunteer Lieutenant George Welch claimed to see Confederate troops and, thus, ordered the ship to be abandoned. But a court the following month failed to turn up evidence of Confederate troops. It's a reminder that more impactful tropical storms and hurricanes can happen even this early in the calendar. Cuban cigarillo factory overwhelmed by burning demand overseas
Working at full capacity, the Internacional Cubana de Tabacos S.A. (ICT) factory produces 800,000 cigarillos a day. It is not enough. Exports have increased tenfold in two decades -- and that's despite stricter smoking laws worldwide, and not being able to sell into the US market due to its decades-long embargo. "Today we have a problem, which is a good problem. Our warehouses, our inventories of finished products, are at zero. Everything we produce, we sell," ICT president Ricardo Soler told AFP at the factory in Havana. "Our production capacity has not been able to meet demand" mainly in Europe, but increasingly also Asia, he said. ICT is a semi state-owned company partnered with Spain's Tabacalera. Its sales grew from 25.4 million cigarillos in 2001 to 200 million last year when the company reported a turnover of $38 million. Unlike Cuba's famous hand-rolled "Habanos," cigarillos are aimed at a market with "lower purchasing power," said Soler. Growth in Cuban cigar sales has also remained strong, reaching $827 million last year -- a 16-percent increase from 2023 driven by Asian demand for luxury products. Cigars are one of Cuba's main export products. "The Habano is the king, we are the princes," said Soler. The ICT factory, opened in 2001, employs some 400 workers, producing cigarillos with 64 machines, seven days a week. "I love my machine," said 24-year-old worker Risel Barbara Fuente, who earns 11,200 pesos (some 93 dollars) per month -- double the average salary in economic crisis-riddled Cuba. Like the others, she also receives a heavily subsidized monthly basket of food and hygiene products worth three times her salary. "Strong investments" are planned for 2025 to increase production capacity, said Soler. © 2025 AFP

The Los Angeles Angels enter Monday with a 16-23 record that ranks last in the American League West. This is despite a promising 9-5 start that had many in Anaheim hopeful a bounce-back season could follow a franchise record 99 losses in 2024. One of the big moves the Angels made in the offseason was not an external one. Moving 11-time All-Star Mike Trout to right field, LA hoped its franchise player could stay healthier in a corner outfield spot. The deal would send right-handed slugger Jorge Soler to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for pitching prospect Ben Kudrna. Soler spent five seasons in Kansas City, and could bolster its lineup with his .802 OPS against right-handed pitching. While Trout was eligible to be activated off the IL on Sunday, he told reporters on Saturday he has yet to begin running, but plans to this week (via Rhett Bollinger of With Trout still inactive, and the Angels slipping further out of postseason contention, getting off Soler's deal could make sense.
