Pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at University of Tennessee file First Amendment suit
Two pro-Palestinian demonstrators who were arrested in 2024 on the University of Tennessee at Knoxville campus have filed a federal lawsuit saying their First Amendment rights were violated. Siblings Hasan Husain and Layla Soliz filed their joint lawsuit May 15 on the one-year anniversary of their arrests. The lawsuit was filed against the Tennessee Board of Regents, University of Tennessee trustees and UT System President Randy Boyd. The two were part of a group of 11 pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrested and charged with trespassing after attending a pro-Palestine vigil at UT. Everyone faced the same single charge of criminal trespass and all were released without having to pay bail. The lawsuit centers on what the two assert are First Amendment violations against 'nonviolent community members who were not violating any laws.' They said the arrests were meant to intimidate demonstrators. 'The First Amendment does not allow campus officials to establish free-expression-black-out hours of the day, even on occasions that may be emotional or politically polarizing,' the suit says. First Amendment experts told Knox News last year that public officials can create reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on demonstrations that do not infringe on free speech as long as they are consistent and provide ample opportunities for expression UT leaders reserved the Student Union lawn for demonstrators from 7 a.m.-10 p.m., aligning the hours with the building's hours of operation during the school year, and maintained consistency with the hours of operation when they changed allowed times for demonstrations to 7 a.m.-6 p.m. when the Student Union switched to its summer hours on May 15, 2024. At about 8 p.m. May 15, 2024, demonstrators were warned to leave the lawn outside the College of Law by Allen Bolton, who was then UT's interim senior vice chancellor for finance and administration. He said demonstrators could move to the Student Union lawn, which was reserved for them. Bolton told the activists to leave the lawn of the law school within 10 minutes. When that deadline passed, police started arresting them. Courts have consistently upheld reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on demonstrations. Soliz partially settled a separate federal lawsuit she filed over her arrest at UT. In March, Soliz was awarded $71,500 by the Knox County Sheriff's Office after the department published online her mug shot without her hijab. Hijabs are worn by Muslim women for modesty and as a symbol of faith. They prevent men from outside a woman's family from seeing her hair. Soliz is pushing for KCSO to amend policy so women no longer have to remove their head coverings for future mug shots. Britney Spears is joined by a creepy companion as she arrives in Mexico for vacation
Britney Spears brought an unexpected friend with her on vacation. When the pop star, 43, touched down in Mexico on Thursday, someone in her entourage could be seen carrying a toy baby doll in the paparazzi photos. The man, who was wearing a black shirt and gray jeans, wrapped the doll in a blanket that he held in his arm. Spears, meanwhile, walked beside her pal dressed in a black hoodie sweatshirt, white shorts, black sunglasses and heeled sandals. The 'Toxic' singer previously showed off a toy baby doll in an Instagram video from October 2021. In the clip, Spears smiled at the camera and danced with the doll. 'I had a baby y'all … I will be taking some time off shooting at home every day !!!' the mom of two wrote in her caption. 'Her nursery is beautiful and her name is Brennan … we even look alike !!! My first !!!' 'I'm turning 40 this year … age is nothing but a number but seriously … growing up is the dumbest thing you'll ever do so PLAY ON MY FRIENDS !!!!' Spears added. One month after sharing the toy doll video, Spears was finally freed from her conservatorship that ruled her life for 13 years. She was first put into conservatorship in 2008 by her now-estranged father, Jamie Spears, following her public meltdown in 2007. Despite her freedom, Spears has continued to spark concern for her behavior mostly because of her strange social media videos. Since arriving in Mexico on Thursday, she's shared footage of herself posing 'naked on the beach all day' and showing of her lingerie in a near-nude photo. In one beach picture, Spears took a snapshot of her feet hanging in the air and wrote, 'I've been blessed !!! .' Before the trip, Page Six confirmed that Spears and her on-off boyfriend, Paul Soliz, broke up in February. TMZ reported that the ex-convict moved all of his things out of Spears' Los Angeles-area home, where they lived together during their relationship. In May 2024, Spears and Soliz got into a fight at Chateau Marmont in LA and an ambulance was called to the scene, though no one was taken to the hospital. Spears started dating Soliz in 2023 after her divorce from Sam Asghari. 'As everyone knows, Sam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I'm a little shocked,' she posted alongside a video of herself dancing at the time of the split. 'I'm not here to explain why because it's honestly nobody's business !!! But, I couldn't take the pain anymore honestly !!!' Spears added. 'In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!!'

Britney Spears ends relationship with Paul Richard Soliz for second time after February breakup
Britney Spears has reportedly ended her on-again, off-again relationship with Paul Richard Soliz for the second time, Page Six confirms. Sources say the pair, who began dating in 2023, quietly split in late February. Their breakup came just weeks after the two were seen spending Valentine's Day together, grabbing dinner at a Jack in the Box drive-thru with Soliz's children. Earlier that month, Spears, 43, was also spotted with several of the kids at an indoor playground in California's San Fernando Valley. Following the split, sources told TMZ that Soliz, 38, moved his belongings out of Spears' Thousand Oaks home, where the couple had been living together. Page Six reached out to Spears' representative for comment but has not yet received a response. Spears and Soliz first became romantically involved after she hired him to do maintenance work at her home. Their relationship became public around the time of her separation from ex-husband Sam Asghari. Spears previously ended things with Soliz in July 2024, reportedly due to concerns that he was taking advantage of her wealth and lifestyle. During their time together, Spears developed a strong bond with several of Soliz's children, particularly his sons Trystan, Dylan, and Nicholas, a.k.a. 'Sonny.' One insider said the boys brought 'life and laughter' to her home and described it as 'filled with love.' However, a second source described the relationship as 'turbulent' and said Spears' inner circle was relieved by the split. With Soliz now out of the picture, Spears appears to be turning the page on another chapter of her personal life.

Woman to receive $71K after Knox County publishes mugshot of her without hijab
KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Knox County will pay Layla Soliz a settlement of $71,500 after publishing a booking photo of her without her hijab, according to her lead counsel, attorney Daniel Horowitz. Layla Soliz, a Muslim woman and Tennessee citizen, wears a hijab every day due to her religious beliefs, according to the lawsuit. On May 15, 2024, she was arrested for a minor misdemeanor charge, and employees at Knox County Sheriff's Office demanded that she remove her hijab for a booking photo despite her objections, the complaint alleges. Knox County seeing impact of fentanyl despite 2024 decline in drug-related deaths KCSO then published the photo to their website, which was seen by hundreds of people, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit says this image was 'humiliating and degrading' and compares it to a woman being asked to take her shirt off in public. The lawsuit quotes KCSO's own policy according to which, an officer of the same gender as the person arrested will take a photo with and without the head covering but will only publish the photo with the head covering, not the one without. An officer told Soliz that KCSO would not publish the photo or let male officers see it, but they did so anyway, according to the lawsuit. Soliz is still demanding that the county delete the uncovered photo of her and reform their booking policy. Teens apprehended at Foothills Mall after allegedly stealing vehicle 'This is a meaningful step toward accountability for violating Mrs. Soliz's religious rights under state and federal law,' said Horowitz. 'Because Knox County has refused to destroy Mrs. Soliz's uncovered booking photograph or update its booking policy to conform with what Mrs. Soliz asserts that state and federal law require, however, those claims will continue.'
