The ‘Marathon' Closed Alpha Accidentally Goes Live For Some Players

Marathon Well, no offense, but it wouldn't be Bungie without some hilarious bug alongside the launch of something big. Today, that is the fact that at least for some players, the Marathon Closed Alpha has gone live a full day early. At this time, that appears to be concentrated to Xbox players only for the Sony-produced game, and whether it's the full scope of those players or just some remains to be seen. The gameplay also is limited to just the tutorial that explains how to play the extraction game, and has players fighting against UESC bots. There is also a first look at a map that has not fully been featured, Perimeter. Obviously if you are an Xbox player with a code, you'll want to get on and try this. I've heard that some players are getting an update they download and then are able to launch the game normally from the game menu. There are some odd things I've noticed about this, including weird poses for heroes in the selection screen and what appear to be really long load times for players that are not actually connecting to a real game. Marathon There are at least three streams like right now playing the tutorial on Xbox. I'm not sure if that indicates this is not the full scope of Xbox players able to access the game, as that's rather low, or if the Xbox playerbase combined with Closed Alpha code acceptance combined with people who actually have the capability or desire to stream makes this amount of streams somewhat expected. Though as this news spreads this morning, I'll assume more will come online. I assume that despite being a single player tutorial, you still have to be signed in to Marathon servers to play, as is the case with most multiplayer games these days. I suppose they could also say screw it and launch the Alpha now, but it stands to reason that may not be technically feasible and they need another day to actually get things ready. But sure, try to get in and play while you can, Xbox folks. I don't think they launch early. I'm also not sure if they shut this down because it's the tutorial. Things do seem…off, like maybe whatever they're working on to launch the Alpha isn't done yet, so perhaps they don't want people basing impressions on a handful of streams in a single tutorial mode. But Bungie has not said anything yet. I'll update this when they do. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Bluesky Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.
