Sonya Curry. Image via: sacurry22/ Instagram Stephen Curry's mom, Sonya Curry, surprised fans with a candid and lively confession during an episode of the Straight to Cam podcast in April. While chatting with her daughter, Sydel Curry-Lee and WNBA star Cameron Brink, Sonya opened up about a passion she's kept hidden for years, and to everyone's surprise, it was her dream of being a hip-hop backup dancer. Stephen Curry's mom, Sonya Curry, shared her long-hidden passion In a candid revelation that felt both heartfelt and hilarious, the mother of the four-time NBA champion, Sonya Curry, said, 'I've always wanted to be a backup dancer. Like a hip-hop backup dancer.' It's a dream Sonya hasn't let go of, even now. She shared how she regularly practices dance routines when she's home alone in Florida. Of course, no audience, no stage, just pure joy of enjoying her passion. 'Nobody knows this, but when I'm home by myself, I actually practice these things in my life. So, I watch videos and stuff, and I try to do moves. I still do it to this day,' she revealed on the Straight to Cam podcast last month. The Moms on Raising the Curry Family, Wild Bachelorette Stories & The Big Fight Explained | EP 11 The moment was more intriguing as her awareness of what the neighbors might think did not divert her from doing the things she loves. With a laugh, she admitted, 'I was doing it the other day in my home in Florida, and I was like, there's no curtains on my window. So I was like, my neighbors are probably like, 'What is this woman doing?'' It was none other than R&B legend Usher. Sonya admitted her admiration for his performances, especially one award show set that stuck with her. 'Usher's always added to things… he had all the ladies, and there was one with short hair. She was doing splits and kicking her leg up in the air and doing all that. I was like, I could just, just one time.' If becoming a backup dancer doesn't pan out, Sonya joked, 'Then I'll just be one of the, you know, you go to clubs in Miami and you get in the little cage and you dance. A go-go dancer.' Image via: Matt Winkelmeyer/ Getty Images | Stephen Gosling/NBAE via Getty Images Stephen Curry has made his name known as one of the greatest shooters in basketball history, but according to his mother, Sonya Curry , the road to NBA superstardom was anything but smooth. In a deeply personal and revealing conversation on Sway's Universe, Sonya revealed never-before-shared details on her son's early struggles with bullying, judgment, and the pressure of being raised in the shadow of an NBA star. Stephen Curry's mom Sonya Curry shared details of childhood bullying he faced Stephen Curry and Sonya Curry. Image via: Getty Images Stephen Curry's mom, Sonya Curry, candidly shared the struggles the Baby-faced Assassin had to face in his childhood. 'He was ridiculed a lot, you know,' Sonya admitted on Sway's Universe. The bullying Stephen endured, as Sonya explained, was because of his father, former NBA player Dell Curry , and many believed Stephen's success was handed to him. 'Your daddy's money,' people would scoff, implying his basketball wins in high school were bought, not earned. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Her body cannot endure this level of pain; please help her. 'They thought Dell was buying referees, you know, paying off the refs,' she recalled. 'They would come and pull out credit cards like, 'You're paying the refs,' and I'm sitting over there like, I'm about to fight somebody in here.' The level of scrutiny was severe, and it could have easily shaken any young athlete's confidence. Instead of admiration for his efforts while entering the basketball scene, Stephen often faced assumptions that he was soft, privileged, or undeserving. 'Everybody always teased him about being raised with a silver spoon in his mouth... like everything he got was given to him,' Sonya explained. But the Currys weren't about to let fame and fortune spoil their children. Sonya and Dell were intentional about grounding their family, even when Dell was an active NBA player. 'We didn't buy the newspapers when Dell played. They didn't go to the games during the week because we would always say, 'That's your daddy's job. Period.'' Sonya also recalled seeing other players' kids decked out at games, living like mini-celebrities. That was never the plan for the Curry kids. 'I watched a lot of kids fail at that goal of getting into the NBA,' she said. 'So we tried to keep it real.' Sonya further gave a stern message to Stephen and his siblings, stating that their father's legacy wasn't theirs to hold on to, 'You get what you're going to get. You're going to do what God has put you on this Earth to do,' she told them. 'And that doesn't mean automatically being who everybody says you should be.' 'Took his mother's genes' – Sonya Curry revealed how Stephen Curry's passion for basketball almost defied a doctor's prediction about his NBA future at birth
From the moment Stephen Curry was born, expectations swirled around him. Doctors noticed his unusually large hands and feet for a newborn and, knowing his father Dell Curry 's basketball background, believed the NBA could be in his future. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But his path to basketball greatness was far from a straight line. Curry's mom, Sonya Curry , revealed astonishing details of the Golden State Warriors legend's path to basketball and when she almost believed that he took her genes. Sonya Curry details Stephen Curry's path to basketball from his childhood As Stephen Curry grew up, he didn't exactly look the part of a future superstar. By the time he was 12, he was wearing size 12.5 shoes, but lacked the physical coordination to match. He ran awkwardly on the court, his large feet flopping as he struggled to keep pace with other kids. His mother, Sonya Curry, recalled watching him play and wondering how this lanky, slow-moving boy could ever turn into a college-level athlete, let alone an NBA player. 'When Stephen was born, you know, the doctor saw his hands and his feet long and they knew his dad played basketball and they're like he's got to play in the NBA. Then, between when he was born and probably till he was about 16, he kind of took his mother's jeans, and so I was like, 'uh here's a 12-year-old boy out here with a size 12 and a half 13 shoe and running up and down the court slow,'' Sonya said appearing in SWAY'S UNIVERSE podcast. Shaq & Steph Curry's Moms Expose the Truth About Fame | SWAY'S UNIVERSE She continued, 'I don't know what and feet flopping and hitting his uh and I'm like dear Lord you cannot leave my child like this like this this can't happen he's got to grow.' Despite those early physical setbacks, there was always something special about Stephen. Friends, family members, and even casual acquaintances noticed it from a young age. He had a calm, kind, and warm presence that made him stand out in any room. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He wasn't just a polite child— he had an energy that naturally drew people in. Even before his skills sharpened, people sensed that he was different in a way they couldn't quite explain. 'Seeing him knowing his aspiration at the time was just to play D1 basketball and so um knowing he was smart enough knowing that there is something about this child,' Sonya shared. 'Everyone he met him even when he was a little kid all the family members was like he's unique, he was just sweet kind gentle, he just kind of flowed into environments and into people very like cuddly and loving and just different, you know' Stephen's dream at the time was to play Division 1 college basketball. His parents knew he had the intelligence and mindset to achieve big things. More importantly, they saw firsthand how committed he was. The Currys gave priorities on hard work at home, setting the example through their own actions. 'Watching him actually work hard actually, that's what's common. All of these celebrities when we talk to the parents, we were behind them to work hard, we set the example of what working hard meant and modeled it, but we were there to encourage and them as they worked hard uh as well,' Sonya added.
