Drogheda's Sophie Reilly crowned Irish Dancing World Champion
On Easter Saturday morning, April 19th, inside a buzzing convention centre in Dublin, the heart of Irish dancing was beating stronger than ever. It had been seven long years since the Irish Dancing World Championships had last returned to the Irish capital. Among the thousands that gathered, one young woman from Drogheda – Sophie Reilly - laced up her dancing shoes, took a deep breath and prepared to etch her name into history.
"It started really early, around 8am,' Sophie recalls. 'The first round is your heavy dance and then the second round is your light dance. Your scores are put together then for a recall – they recall about 50 pc of the dancers. Then if you're lucky enough to get to that last round, which is the third round, it's your set dance.'
