Soufiane El Bakkali Satisfied with Race Victory, Thanks King
Rabat – Moroccan star Soufiane El Bakkali won the World Leading Time of the year in the 3000-meter steeplechase during the Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting, the fourth leg of the 2025 Diamond League. El Bakkali, a double Olympic and World Champion, reached his newest milestone on Sunday at the annex Olympic Stadium of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat. He clocked a time of 8 minutes 00.70 seconds to win the race and set the World Leading time of the year, finishing ahead of Germany's Frederik Ruppert and Kenya's Edmund Serem. In a statement following the race, El Bakkali expressed his pride and happiness at winning the race in front of Moroccan fans and his mother. He also commended the quality of the new track at Rabat's Olympic stadium, describing it as 'first-class.' This will attract many world-class athletes to Morocco in the coming years, he said. El Bakkali also thanked King Mohammed VI for prioritizing sports and the development of sports infrastructure across Morocco. He vowed to make Morocco proud as his next two races, including in Paris. The Paris race will serve as a training ground for his World Championship. 'I finished the race comfortably. I thank all the people and fans who supported and came to cheer on Soufiane El Bakkali,' he said. In April, El Bakkali came second in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Diamond League in Xiamen in China. In the Paris 224 Olympics, he successfully secured the gold medal in the men's steeplechase, following his first Olympic gold at Tokyo in 2020. Olympian Soufiane El Bakkali to Lead Lineup as Rabat Hosts Mohammed VI Meet
Rabat – Rabat is gearing up for the fourth leg of the Diamond League, with the event featuring top Moroccan athletes, including Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali. Morocco's capital will host this week the Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme, the fourth leg of the Diamond League. The event will take place on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium of the Prince Moulay Abdallah Sports Complex and will be officially launched after the preparation works are completed. The contest will feature 16 runners in various categories, with national competitions in the women's and men's 200 meters, 800 meters for both categories, as well as 1500 meters and 400 meters for men. Moroccan champion Saad Hammouda will compete in the high jump, Salma El Badra will compete in the women's 1500 meters, and the Moroccan duo of Abdelati El Kass and Abdel Rahman El Assal will compete in the 800 meters. The rest of the competitions will also see the participation of Moroccan runners, with Waleed El Boussiri participating in the 400-meter race, and four runners in the 1500-meter race: Anas El Sai, Hassan Majahid, Hafiz Rizki, and Abdellatif Seddiqi. The women's 800-meter race will see Assia Riziki and Sakina Hajji compete against world champions. The Diamond League will conclude with the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which will feature five champions, led by Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali : Mohamed Tindouft, Mostafa Fayed, Abderrafie Boulassel, and Salaheddine Benizaid. Soufiane El Bakkali elected president of Moroccan athletes' commission
Moroccan double world champion in the 3000m steeplechase, Soufiane El Bakkali, was unanimously elected president of the Athletes' Commission under the Moroccan National Olympic Committee (CNOM) on Sunday, May 11, 2025. Speaking to the national sports channel Arryadia, the Olympic gold medalist said he was «honored» by the trust placed in him, adding that it strengthened his commitment to «effectively advocate for the interests of Moroccan athletes and ensure their voices are heard».

Morocco's Champion Soufiane El Bakkali Elected President of Athletes' Commission
Rabat – Beyond being Morocco's pride as a champion, Soufiane El Bakkali is now the President of the Athletes' Commission within the Moroccan National Olympic Committee (CNOM), after receiving a unanimous vote of approval on Sunday. 'This is a great initiative… I am happy to be here, and I am happy to be elected as the president of this committee,' El Bakkali said following the vote. He added that he will work with all committee members to serve athletes' needs and demands. 'We want the athlete's voice to be heard through a roadmap that we are going to work with, and this committee will serve to make the athlete heard,' he said, adding that he sees his election coming at the right moment. 'I see this is the right moment to enter this field, thanks to the experience I gained. This is pride for me to enter this field,' El Bakkali added, noting that he has a new vision that he would like to share with other committee members so they can work together to serve Morocco and its representation. El Bakkali has represented Morocco in many international competitions, winning prestigious awards – including in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where he secured gold in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Also part of his Olympic accolades, he took gold in the Tokyo Games in 2020. The two-time Olympic and world champion came second in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2022 Diamond League in Xiamen in China. El Bakkali completed the race with a time of 8 minutes, 6.66 seconds, finishing behind Ethiopia's Samuel Firewu who won with a time of 8 minutes, 5.61 seconds. Kenya's Simon Kiprob Koech took third place with a time of 8 minutes, 7.12 seconds. El Bakkali's impressive career includes winning the Diamond League title in 2022. During the Paris 2024 Olympics, Soufiane El Bakkali successfully secured the gold in the men's 3,000m steeplechase, following his first Olympic gold at Tokyo.
