ST. LOUIS – The weekend's Soulard Mardi Gras celebration draws thousands of people to the historic south St. Louis neighborhood, providing an economic boost to local restaurants, bars, and shops. With the large crowds and frivolity comes an increased police presence. On Monday, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department released arrest statistics for this past Saturday. The Bud Light Grand Parade ran that morning, featuring 80 units rolling through Soulard. Seven people were detained for underage drinking, issued summonses, and released; one person was arrested for disturbing the peace and resisting arrest; one person was arrested for fourth-degree assault on a law enforcement officer; and three people were arrested on at-large warrants for third-degree assault. While the origins of Mardi Gras stem from New Orleans, St. Louis also has some deep-rooted connections. Back in the 1790s, one southern area of St. Louis City was run by an upper Louisiana surveyor named Antoine Soulard. SOULARD – Local businesses are gearing up for one of the biggest weekends of the year—from bars to restaurants and shops. It's more than a party in Soulard; it's a big economic boom for local business. With all the decorations going up, thousands are coming to flood the historic neighborhood, bars and restaurants. The Friday mayor's ball kicks off this weekend's festivities, and many are expected to let the good times roll as they crowd into the streets of Soulard. 'We have regulars who come in and book VIP service from different states,' Paige Bequette said. 'And then, we also have for our community here. It's really great for our economy.' The chef is also getting in on the action with Cajun-inspired dishes flying off the grills. The kitchen is working overtime and all hands are on deck. The celebration will help contribute to the overall economic vitality in the area; meanwhile, Mardi Gras organizers want everyone to have fun, but also want to ensure a safe environment. Individuals can expect to see more officers on foot, with Soulard Mardi Gras being one of the biggest outside of New Orleans. What do Trump's federal workforce cuts mean for the Gateway Arch? 'We know for a fact that about 25% of our visitors are on Grand Parade day are from outside the Saint Louis area,' Mack Bradley said. 'We are filling hotel rooms all across the region.
