A new multi-venue music festival is debuting in Chicago this September

Chicago's Bricktown and Avondale neighborhoods are about to get their own music microverse. Sound & Gravity, a new five-day music festival from Constellation Performing Arts and Pitchfork co-founder Mike Reed, is set to debut on September 10–14, 2025, and it's shaping up to be one of the most eclectic and community-rooted events in the city's fall calendar. Spanning six intimate venues—Constellation, Hungry Brain, Judson & Moore, Beat Kitchen, Guild Row and Rockwell on the River—the festival will mount 48 performances focusing on a wide range of genres, from contemporary classical and jazz to experimental, indie and electronic music. The lineup includes Bill Callahan, Mdou Moctar, Helado Negro, Mary Lattimore, Body/Head, Jeff Parker Expansion Trio, The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis, and surprise sets curated by Electrical Audio, the studio founded by the late Steve Albini. 'Sound & Gravity extends Constellation's mission, offering a concentrated dose of the venue's innovative spirit across multiple locations in one of the city's most creative neighborhoods,' said Reed in an official statement. Founded by Reed in 2013, Constellation has become a mainstay of —a haven for artists and audiences seeking performance experiences that defy genre and expectation. 'What we do here is all about wanting to present music in the way we want to present it,' Reed told the Chicago Sun-Times. All participating venues are within a five- to 15-minute walk from each other, so the fest is designed to feel more like a curated neighborhood crawl than a mega-event. 'It's creating this little [music experience] hub,' he added.

Afternoon Briefing: Johnson pitches ‘modest' Springfield wish list

Good afternoon, Chicago. Mayor Brandon Johnson touted his Springfield agenda as both 'modest' and beneficial to the whole state of Illinois during a short stop to the statehouse today, where he will surely face steep headwinds to accomplish what he wants for Chicago during a tough state budget season. This is Johnson's first visit to the General Assembly since May 2024, when he came home with lackluster results for the city. Faced with ongoing reluctance from lawmakers and Gov. JB Pritzker, the mayor has fine-tuned his message this time to make the case that helping Chicago will help the rest of the state. Here's what else is happening today. Constellation announces new Sound & Gravity festival of jazz and avant-garde

A first-time music festival by the owner of the music venue Constellation is coming to the Bricktown and Avondale neighborhoods this September. Sound & Gravity, created by Mike Reed, will be Sept. 10-14 at Constellation, Hungry Brain, Judson & Moore, Beat Kitchen, Guild Row and Rockwell on the River, with an avant-garde, experimental music and jazz-heavy lineup of some 48 acts in all over five days, including an opening night event. Headliners and boldface names include Bill Callahan, Mdou Moctar, Helado Negro, Mary Lattimore, Irreversible Entanglements, Jeff Parker Expansion Trio, ganavya, Tarbaby, The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, Julianna Barwick, Mary Halvorson, William Tyler, Elias Rønnenfelt, Third Coast Percussion and Glenn Kotche, as well as sets created by Electric Audio, the Chicago studio founded by the late Steve Albini. An announcement of the festival on Wednesday said it hoped to present 'a diverse range of musical genres which reflect the eclectic programming ethos of Constellation Performing Arts.' Reed is also known for co-founding the now-shuttered Pitchfork Music Festival, which ran more or less annually in Union Park from 2006 to 2024. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for Constellation Performing Arts.
