Severe weather, snow predicted for these parts of South Africa
There is expected to be some severe weather on its way to South Africa. Images: Canva Accoring to a media release from the South Africa Weather Service, a spell of 'extreme winter weather' is expected to hit the country this weekend, with snowfalls possible over all provinces, except Limpopo. In the coming days, a particularly intense cut-off low (COL) system, associated with severe winter weather, is expected to affect South Africa, persisting until at least the middle of next week over the eastern provinces. Some of the more extreme weather impacts associated with this system include the following: Snowfalls over almost every province, with the exception of Limpopo. Some of these snowfalls will be disruptive, affecting traffic flow over mountain passes (for example, the N3 at Van Reenen's pass). Strong, damaging surface winds over large parts of the interior provinces from Sunday, leading to an elevated risk of wildfires, especially over the central and eastern interior, ahead of the cold change. These extreme conditions are expected to persist over some of the eastern provinces until Wednesday. Strong to near-gale force coastal winds and very rough seas could be expected from Friday along the south-west coast, spreading to the south and east coasts during Saturday, and lasting until at least Tuesday along the east coast. Heavy rainfall leading to localised flooding and infrastructure damage over parts of the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior on Sunday, shifting to southern KZN on Monday. Bitterly cold daytime conditions over many provinces from Sunday, with maximum temperatures unlikely to exceed 10C°. These conditions will be exacerbated by strong, gusty winds. There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms; possibly associated with damaging hail and/or damaging winds over some provinces, including North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN during Monday and Tuesday. Weather: Snow expected in South Africa as cold front hits
The latest weather news is that it might snow in South Africa this week. Forecasters say a strong cold front is moving across the country and may bring snow to the mountain peaks of the Eastern Cape by Wednesday. While northern places like Polokwane, Musina, and Mbombela will stay warm, colder weather is expected to move south from Pretoria. From midweek into Thursday, expect cloudy skies, chilly temperatures, and scattered showers. According to the South Africa Weather Service, the Eastern Cape could see snow on the higher mountain peaks, which is unusual for this time of year. Cold air is moving through the region, making snow possible. If it snows, roads may become icy and travel could be tricky, especially in mountain passes. Residents and visitors should keep an eye on local weather alerts and drive carefully. Towns like Springbok, Sutherland, and parts of the Karoo in the west are already feeling the cold. Freezing temperatures and icy winds will continue this week, making it one of the coldest periods this season. This cold snap reminds us to prepare warm clothing and to check on family members and neighbours who may need extra help. Prepare for a weather shift: Cold fronts bringing rain and strong winds to Western Cape
The South Africa Weather Service has warned of intense cold and wet conditions in Western Cape. Picture: File As South Africans enjoy the somewhat mild and rain-free weather, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning that two cold frontal systems are expected to sweep across parts of the Western Cape next week, specifically from May 19 until May 23. It is set to bring strong winds and rough seas, with a promise of wet and cold conditions on the horizon. The initial cold front will make landfall in the south-western part of the country on May 19, bringing wet and windy conditions that will primarily affect the western regions of the Western Cape. Unfortunately, your washing will have to wait even longer, as May 20 (Tuesday) will see the severe weather extend further east, reaching the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape and eventually affecting parts of the Eastern Cape. Rainfall accumulations are expected to vary between 15 to 25 mm, with higher elevations possibly receiving between 30 to 50 mm of precipitation. As a result of this persistent wet weather, localised flooding could ensue, notably in areas lacking adequate drainage and low-lying regions. In addition to wet conditions, strong and gusty winds can be expected.
