Officials stepped in and prevented PGA Championship victory over unknown rule

Dustin Johnson could have gone on to win his first major title at the PGA Championship back in 2010 had it not have been for him unknowingly breaking the unique rules Dustin Johnson saw a potential PGA Championship win fade in an instant by unknowingly breaking a rule. This year's tournament is reaching its climax, at which point in 2010, Johnson only required a par on the final hole of Whistling Straits to secure victory over Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson. And while many would have expected the now- LIV Golf star, 40, to seal the deal on the day, fate had other plans for him. Johnson began the final hole with a wayward tee shot that flew off to the right of the fairway before landing in a sandy patch. ‌ Despite sand being present in the vicinity of his ball, Johnson believed it to be a 'waste area', which would allow his club to become grounded as he prepared for his second shot. However, a unique rule for that year's instalment of the tournament meant that every sand patch on the course was to be played as a hazard instead. ‌ As a result of grounding his club in an area which was deemed to be a bunker, Johnson unbeknowingly landed himself a two-stroke penalty. Blissfully unaware of his infringement, Johnson missed his par putt and registered a bogey, with his attention turning to a play-off. However, PGA officials were quick to highlight the error of his ways almost instantly after he carded his score, meaning that Johnson was not only out of a title, but also out of the play-off with Kaymer and Watson. Speaking about the incident, Johnson said: "I just thought I was on a piece of dirt that the crowd had trampled down. "I never thought I was in a sand trap. It never once crossed my mind that I was in a bunker. Obviously I know the rules of golf and I can't ground my club in a bunker, but that was just one situation I guess. "Maybe I should have looked to the rule sheet a little harder." Johnson had plenty of warning regarding the sand patches, given that event organisers went to extreme lengths to notify players of the rules. A note was also displayed in the locker room which read: "All areas of the course that were designed and built as sand bunkers will be played as bunkers (hazards), whether or not they have been raked. This will mean that many bunkers positioned outside of the ropes, as well some areas of bunkers inside the ropes, close to the rope line, will likely include numerous footprints, heel prints and tire tracks during the play of the Championship. ‌ "Such irregularities of surface are a part of the game and no free relief will be available from these conditions." Kaymer ultimately won the Championship in 2010 after besting Watson over the course of the 10th, 17th, and 18th holes - winning his own first major title in the process. Johnson, meanwhile, settled for a T5 finish alongside Jason Dufner and Steve Elkington with an overall score of nine-under-par - two strokes behind Kaymer and Watson. To date, the South Carolina-born pro is still yet to taste success at the PGA Championship, with his best finish coming in the form of second in 2019. However, he has since gone on to achieve victory at two major tournaments. Johnson bagged his first major title at the 2016 US Open, running out with a three-stroke lead over Shane Lowry, Jim Furyk, and Scott Piercy at Oakmont Country Club with a total score of four-under. He then claimed his second at the 2020 Masters at Augusta National, finishing five strokes clear of Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith at a record-low 20-under par. With a total of 24 wins on the PGA Tour, Johnson switched allegiance to LIV Golf in June 2022. Fast forward to 2025 and he's racked up a total of three event wins under the breakaway banner, captaining the 4Aces GC team of Thomas Pieters, Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III. His last LIV win came in Las Vegas back in February 2024.

EXCLUSIVE Scruffy Hollywood charmer is unrecognizable while filming with much younger actress

Johnny Depp continued work filming Marc Webb's action thriller Day Drinker while on location at a port near Barcelona, Spain last Friday. The 61-year-old movie star enlisted his very own umbrella handler to shield his pale complexion from the sunshine while headed to the seaside set. Johnny was barely recognizable, mostly thanks to the salt-and-pepper beard crafted by make-up artist Zoe Hay, in honor of his bohemian billionaire character Kelly. Hairstylist Massimo Gattabrusi dyed just the front of Depp's brown hair silver to match the glued-on facial hairpiece and make his wig look fully integrated. The three-time Oscar nominee - who relies on make-up artist Rocky Faulkner - was wearing his own double-denim ensemble, sunglasses, and colorful scarf rather than a costume. Johnny then boarded a motorboat alongside crew members to ferry him to the vintage yacht Nero. Day Drinker is set entirely aboard the yacht where Depp's character is a 'mysterious guest' that gets 'entangled with criminal figure Cara Lauzzana (Penélope Cruz).' On April 14, Lionsgate released the first still of the Modì director in character as the whiskey-sipping Kelly including blue-colored contact lenses created by Jessica A. Nelson. Johnny is 34 years older than his co-star Madelyn Cline, who portrays private-yacht bartender Lorna that connects with Kelly 'in ways no one saw coming.' The Outer Banks star went incognito as she boarded her own motorboat. Madelyn looked comfy sporting a black hoodie, drawstring wide-leg patterned pants, and white Crocs with her Beats headphones around her neck. Cline beamed as she chatted with a male crew member on the flick also starring Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle. The South Carolina-born beauty was later seen in a white-collared top as part of her uniform, which was hidden beneath a matching robe and Ugg slippers. On Sunday, Depp reposted Stella McCartney's throwback Instastory of the pair partying at the 2014 Met Gala with his Public Enemies leading lady Marion Cotillard. The Johnny Puff: Secret Mission actor famously attended the Costume Institute benefit with his second ex-wife Amber Heard, who testified in 2022 that he 'broke her nose' in a jealous rage afterwards. 'He was accusing me of flirting with a woman. We get back to the hotel room, he shoves me and grabs my collarbone. I remember he threw a bottle at me, missed me, hit the chandelier,' the expecting 39-year-old claimed during their civil defamation trial. I was unsure what that feeling was but I suspected I had a broken nose. And other than that I remember my nose being swollen in discolored.' And while there was no evidence of Johnny abusing anything but kitchen cabinets, there's plenty of evidence of him in the ER in Australia after Amber threw a bottle of booze at him and severed the tip of his finger. Heard was found liable in all three matters of defamation raised while Depp was only found liable in one of three matters of defamation raised - and her insurer eventually forked over $1M to Depp, which he pledged to donate to charities. Over 500M people reportedly livestreamed the contentious six-week legal war between the exes, which was held at Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia in 2022. 'You didn't get punched; you got hit. I'm sorry I hit you like this, but I did not punch you,' Heard admitted in an audio recording. 'I did not f***ing deck you. I f***ing was hitting you. I don't know what the motion of my actual hand was. But you're fine. I did not hurt you. I did not punch you. I was hitting you. 'I'm not sitting here bi***ing about it, am I? You are. That's the difference between me and you. You're a f***ing baby. You are such a baby. Grow the f*** up, Johnny.' Johnny and Amber were only married for 15 months before their acrimonious $7M divorce in 2017 amid back-and-forth abuse allegations. On May 27, Depp and his babymama Vanessa Paradis will celebrate the 26th birthday of their daughter Lily-Rose Depp. The Kentucky-born rhythm guitarist also fathered 23-year-old son John III aka Jack during his 14-year relationship with the 52-year-old Frenchwoman, which ended in 2012. The expecting 39-year-old claimed during their civil defamation trial: 'He was accusing me of flirting with a woman. 'It's very close to being a done deal. A script is already in place,' a senior executive told the UK's Express on April 19. 'They actually had two scripts ready to go – one with Johnny in mind, the other without him – and they are ready to can the one without him.' Depp will also soon reunite with his two-time director Terry Gilliam to portray Satan in his biblical comedy Carnival: At the End of Days, which will soon begin shooting in Italy. The SAG Award winner's multi-layered immersive art exhibition A Bunch of Stuff is currently running through May 22 at Starrett-Lehigh Building in Manhattan.
