North Bay Haven wins second region title in three years

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – The North Bay Haven boys tennis team defeated South Walton 4-1 at home Thursday afternoon, winning the Class 2A Region 1 Championship. It was the second region title for the Buccaneers in three seasons and the second in program history. North Bay Haven will be underdogs at the FHSAA State Championships but senior Nicolas Silva says they're going to give it their best shot. 'I'm never counting anything out,' Silva said. 'I mean, it's not about who the bigger school is or who the best players are, it's about who's playing the best on that day and who's doing their best on that day. So, that's what we're looking forward to.' The State meet will be held in Orlando from Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 2. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. District Baseball Roundup: Niceville, South Walton go wild in championship routs

NICEVILLE — Anyone who's seen Niceville baseball this year knew a district title was an inevitability. South Walton, too. That doesn't make their accomplishments Wednesday any less noteworthy. For the Eagles, Justin Bruce's 23-4 crew carried the burden of a program not winning a district title since 2018. Advertisement In Wednesday's three-inning, run-ruled hit parade on The Hill, the Eagles went 9-for-17 at the dish with 11 free passes as everyone contributed in the 15-0 District 1-5A championship win. Leadoff hitter CJ Bolden went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and reached in all three plate appearances, while Remington Crum drove in a pair, scored a run and walked twice. Landon Hawkins, Nick Gates, Matthew Marcantonio and Yahir Burgos each logged a hit and drove in a run, Colton Cook scored two runs and stole a base and Jackson Marquardt, Deacon Avery and Hunter Tarchalski each had a base knock as Tarchaslki scored three runs. Flag Football: Choctaw beats FWB for district crown, sets sights on state title State Weightlifting: Niceville's Mathews defends state titles, rewrites record books On the mound, Brady Martin earned the win after striking out six over three scoreless, two-hit frames and Tarchalski capped the run-ruled win with a scoreless fourth. Advertisement "I am very excited for this group. They have worked extremely hard for this moment," coach Bruce said. "It's a senior-driven team that made this district championship a team goal to accomplish from the very beginning. We're excited to begin regional playoffs next week." The Niceville baseball team celebrated a 15-0 win over Milton Wednesday for the District 1-5A championship, its first since 2018. These Eagles are built different from previous versions, outscoring foes 242-90 with their losses coming to Tennessee powerhouse Clarksville, top-ranked 3A South Walton, playoff contender Chiles and Milton. They currently rank first in all of 5A, boding well for the potential of no less than three home games this postseason if they continue on. Built different would be a good way to describe South Walton (24-3), the ninth-ranked team in Florida and coming off a state runner-up season last year. Their 10-0 District 1-3A championship victory over West Florida at home Wednesday was their 14th straight victory and featured its stars doing what they do best. Advertisement Backed by a top-to-bottom effort from his lineup, Braxton Varnes (4-0, 0.27 ERA) tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and a walk as his only blemish over five scoreless innings. Auburn commit Coleman Borthwick went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored and Charlie Wilcox went 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Frank Wells added two RBIs and a hit and Nathan Whitney, Cameron Tipton-Thomas and Jackson Perkins each drove in run for the Seahawks, whose seven-run fifth walked it off. Now the top-ranked Seahawks are set to host throughout regionals, their 275-52 run differential putting a target on their backs as the team to beat in 3A as they'll undoubtedly have homefield advantage in Region 1. Also hoisting district champ hardware was Rocky Bayou (9-6-1), which destroyed L.E.A.D. Academy in a 17-1 win for the District 1-1A title. Advertisement The Knights walked it off in the fourth as four players had multi-hit efforts and another five had multi-RBI nights. Henry Baltz, Matthew Duplechain and Kaine Stine each had three RBIs and Cayden Ricciardi went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs. That proved plenty of run support for Colt Stevens, who struck out eight and didn't allow an earned run over four innings of two-hit ball. As for other championship results around the area, Choctaw (15-12) lost 7-1 at Escambia in the District 1-4A finals and Crestview (11-16) lost 10-0 at Pace in the District 1-6A title game. Regional brackets come out Friday afternoon to determine the postseason paths for area teams.
