Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, Former Defence Attache to Pakistan, appointed chief of South Western Air Command
Former Defence Attache to Pakistan, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, took over as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Air Command (SWAC), an official release stated on Thursday. Kapoor has succeeded Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who has taken over as Vice Chief of Air Staff, the release added. The release stated that Kapoor graduated from National Defence Academy in December 1985 and was commissioned in the IAF on December 6, 1986. 'He is a highly experienced fighter pilot, qualified flying instructor and a fighter combat leader who has flown a variety of combat and trainer aircraft. He has flown all variants of MiG-21 and the MiG-29 with more than 3,400 flying hours to his credit,' the release said. As per the release, 'During his illustrious career, he (Kapoor) has held numerous field and staff appointments. His operational tenures include being the Commanding Officer of a fighter squadron in the Central Sector, Station Commander of a flying base in the Western Sector and Air Officer Commanding of a premier air base. He has also done instructional tenures as Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College and Chief Instructor (Flying) at Air Force Academy during which he was instrumental in the induction and operationalisation of PC-7 MK II aircraft in the Indian Air Force.'

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor takes charge as AOC-in-C of SW Air Command
Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, a highly experienced fighter pilot with more than 3,400 flying hours to his credit, on Thursday took charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the South Western Air Command (SWAC). He succeeds Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who is set to take charge as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff on May 2. South Western Air Command is headquartered in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. On arrival, he was presented with a ceremonial guard of honour at the headquarters in Gandhinagar. The air marshal graduated from the National Defence Academy in December 1985 and commissioned in the IAF on December 6, 1986, according to a statement shared by the IAF. He is a highly experienced fighter pilot, a qualified flying instructor and a fighter combat leader who has flown a variety of combat and trainer aircraft, it said. The air marshal has flown all variants of MiG-21 and the MiG-29 with more than 3,400 flying hours to his credit. Prior to assuming the charge as the AOC-in-C, SWAC, the air marshal was AOC-in-C, Training Command. For his distinguished service, the air marshal has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 2008, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025.

He will succeed Air Marshal S P Dharkar, who superannuated on April 30. On day of his superannuation, the air marshal was given a guard of honour at the Air Headquarters -- Vayu Bhawan. He also paid tribute to the fallen heroes at the National War Memorial here. In October 2024, Air Marshal Dharkar, an accomplished fighter pilot, had assumed charge as Vice Chief of the Air Staff. He had succeeded Air Chief Marshal A P Singh who is currently the Indian Air Force Chief. Air Marshal Tiwari will take charge as Vice Chief of the Air Staff on May 2, a senior official said. He had taken over as AOC-in-C, South Western Air Command (SWAC) in Gandhinagar in May 2023. He was commissioned in the fighter stream in June 1986. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he passed out as the President Gold Medallist. Air Marshal Tiwari has flown various types of aircraft, and is a qualified flying instructor as well as an experimental test pilot, the defence ministry had earlier said in a statement. The air marshal has rich field experience which also includes operational testing of various weapons and systems, primarily on the Mirage-2000. He was actively involved in operations and also took part in many important missions during the Kargil conflict, it had said.
