WAVY meteorologist Don Slater breaks down how it all played out:
As expected, an active low pressure system (a mini-cyclone) moved eastward from halfway across the U.S. to get us this morning. We had numerous severe thunderstorm warnings from 5:47am to 9:45am, but damage appears to be limited to trees and power lines down. That damage was mostly in Southampton County, VA. Though we did see tree and power line damage in southern Chesapeake.
After some quiet time in the late morning and early afternoon, it was also expected that we could see some severe weather in the afternoon. And though the thunderstorms were more widely scattered, we did get some damage to trees in James City County. As of 9:00 pm, more thunderstorms are approaching from the west…especially for areas from the Peninsula and northward. While these storms have not had an immediate history of producing damage, we are watchful just in case they flare up as they move eastward into the area.
