Southfield doctor found guilty of fraudulently securing $1.7 million federal loan

A federal jury has convicted a Southfield, Michigan doctor of bank fraud after he deceptively obtained a $1.7 million loan from the Paycheck Protection Program, according to the U.S Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. The jury found Dr. Reginald Eburuche guilty on Thursday. The attorney's office, citing evidence presented at trial, said Eburuches looked at getting a loan from the PPP program after unsuccessfully attempting to get a line of credit for his start-up business Renovis Healthcare in 2019. Eburuche "grossly inflated the number of employees and the average monthly payroll" in his loan application, according to federal officials. He also created and uploaded fraudulent tax documents that made it look like his headcount and salary expenditures were legitimate. He received the $1.7 million loan in July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the attorney's office, a large portion of the funds were frozen and seized ahead of the trial. "When a licensed professional chooses fraud over integrity, the harm runs deeper than dollars," U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. said in a release about the conviction on Friday.

Family and friends share memories of London Thomas at candlelight vigil and balloon release

The body of 17-year-old London Thomas was found in Southfield, Michigan, on April 26, over three weeks after she was reported missing. Thomas's family and friends gathered in Redford Township on Saturday for a candlelight vigil and balloon release to mark what would've been her 18th birthday. "She loved everyone, and by this turnout, from what you see, her love spread far," Jasma Bennett, Thomas's mom, said. The gathering took place at Claude Allison Park. "You know we really miss her, we really love her," Darius Hatcher, Thomas's uncle, said, "and we do have a sense of peace and comfort to a certain extent with today, and we're just trying to make it as happy as possible as opposed to the tragedy that's set before us, so we're trying to remember the fun and happy times." Thomas's loved ones are making sure that she's not forgotten and that she will be remembered for being a decent human being with a bright future ahead. "She had a bright spirit, she was loving, she was caring, full of energy, always the life of the party, as you can see," Danielle Douglas, Thomas's cousin, said. While the purpose of the vigil was to celebrate the life of Thomas, her family members continue to ask for answers and justice, just like they have been since she went missing on April 5. "We hate the way everything happened, but today we just need justice." Cedric Salisbury, Thomas's dad, said. "I know they got suspects and I'm waiting on them to charge them," Jestina Martin, Thomas's grandmother, said. Bennett says that police have not given her any new information other than that the investigation is still ongoing. Earlier this month, 48-year-old Charla Rashida Pendergrass was charged with lying to police officers in connection with the investigation into Thomas's death.

Southfield man charged with sexually assaulting 2 young children

A Southfield man is facing several felony charges after police say he sexually assaulted two young children. Lawrence Edward Miles, 69, is charged with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said an investigation into Miles began on May 5, when the parents reported the sexual assault of their children, a boy and a girl under the age of 10. Police say the alleged assault occurred on May 3 while the children were in the care of Miles, and that the boy told his mother on May 4 that Miles had touched his sister inappropriately. According to Barren, Miles reportedly told the children not to tell their parents about what had occurred and that if the children spoke to their parents, they would no longer be able to visit him again. Barren said Miles does not have a criminal history. The chief added that Miles was an educator in Kansas, Illinois and Georgia, and that more victims may come forward. "These are extremely disturbing allegations, and the charges my office issued carry the possibility of life in prison," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a statement. "Children deserve to grow up safe from abuse. I applaud the work of our partners at the Southfield Police Department and CARE House of Oakland County for their diligent investigation into this tragic case." Miles was arraigned Thursday, denied bond and remanded to jail. He has a preliminary examination later in May. contributed to this report.

Dolly's opens third Cincinnati-area restaurant in former Frisch's Big Boy in Colerain

Dolly's Burgers & Shakes is set to open its third Cincinnati-area location on Thursday at a former Frisch's Big Boy in Colerain Township, according to the new restaurant concept's Michigan-based owner. The diner restaurant, located at 9830 Colerain Ave., will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., said Southfield, Michigan-based Big Boy Restaurant Group. The latest opening comes after the company reopened former Frisch's in Blue Ash and Anderson Township in early March. The company has also reopened former Frisch's in Miamisburg and Troy near Dayton in the last month. 'Cincinnati has welcomed us with open arms, and we're excited to keep the momentum going,' said Big Boy CEO Tamer Afr, in a statement. Big Boy is in the midst of a legal battle with Frisch's over the right to use the Big Boy name in Cincinnati. In the meantime, it's using the 'working title' of Dolly's Burgers & Shakes, inspired by the name of Big Boy's girlfriend in comic books once published by the chain. Last month, Big Boy disclosed plans to reopen 55 former Frisch's by June 1. The company is currently hiring at nine other former Frisch's locations in Greater Cincinnati, according to its job postings website. Big Boy decided to move into Greater Cincinnati after the shuttering of more than 60 Frisch's diners. Frisch's former landlord, Orlando-based NNN Reit, said in court filings that Frisch's owed it more than $4.5 million in back rent. Frisch's, which had more than 80 locations in three states in early 2024, now has just over 30. Big Boy officials said they began talks to take over old Frisch's locations in October after NNN Reit began evicting Frisch's.
