(Spada/LaPresse via AP) MILAN (AP) — AC Milan fired Sergio Conceicao as expected on Thursday following a disappointing season that saw the Rossoneri fail to qualify for Europe. The seven-time European champion has reportedly reached an agreement with Massimiliano Allegri to return as coach. Advertisement Milan finished eighth in Serie A, 19 points behind Italian champion Napoli. 'The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the first team over the past few months,' Milan said in a statement. Conceicao replaced the fired Paulo Fonseca in December with an 18-month contract and promptly guided Milan to the Italian Super Cup title in Saudi Arabia during his first matches in charge. But Milan was eliminated by Feyenoord in the Champions League playoffs in February then got beat by Bologna in the Italian Cup final this month. Meanwhile, city rival Inter Milan will play Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final Saturday. Allegri coached Milan to the Serie A title in 2011. ___ AP soccer:

(Massimo Paolone/LaPresse via AP) AC Milan's head coach Sergio Conceicao reacts during the Serie A soccer match between Milan and Bologna at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, Friday May 9, 2025. (Spada/LaPresse via AP) MILAN (AP) — A cup specialist will take on a serial runner-up when AC Milan plays Bologna in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday. And both teams will be looking to get their hands on the trophy for the first time in decades. Advertisement Bologna hasn't won the Italian Cup since 1974, which was its last major trophy. Milan has won plenty of trophies since then, but last lifted the Italian Cup 22 years ago — losing two finals in the intervening years. This time, however, the Rossoneri are led by a cup specialist in coach Sérgio Conceição. Indeed, Conceição has already steered Milan to a trophy this season — winning the Italian Super Cup in January just a week after being appointed as coach. That was the 50-year-old's 12th trophy as coach, with nine coming in cup competitions. Conceição also lifted seven cup trophies as a player, with Porto and Lazio. Advertisement However, even if Milan ends the season with two trophies in Conceição's five months in charge, it might not be enough to save the Portuguese coach's job. Milan is eighth in Serie A with two rounds remaining and only has a slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League — or any European competition. Winning the Italian Cup would earn Milan a spot in the Europa League and go some way toward salvaging a season where the Rossoneri were never competitive in Serie A or Europe, having been dumped out of the Champions League by Feyenoord in the knockout playoff round. 'It's not the moment to talk about my future,' Conceição said. 'Now we're only thinking about this final, against a difficult team to face. Advertisement 'I have my character and my personality, I've changed things and you need time but at Milan you don't have time. … At Milan, what counts is winning trophies and Wednesday we have a great chance.' In contrast to Conceição, Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano has not fared well in finals. Italiano never won a cup in his playing days and, as Fiorentina coach, he lost back-to-back Europa Conference League finals — in 2023 and 2024 — and finished runner-up in the 2023 Italian Cup. Second meeting in a week The cup final in Rome will be the teams' second meeting in less than a week. Two goals from Santiago Giménez, either side of a Christian Pulisic strike, saw Milan rally to beat Bologna 3-1 and seriously dent its opponent's chances of qualifying for the Champions League again. Advertisement 'We were ahead and we thought we could control it, Milan didn't give the impression of wanting to attack,' Bologna scorer Riccardo Orsolini said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. 'We gave them the spark that rekindled them and we got sliced through like butter. If we play like that in Rome we'll get slapped. We've understood what we shouldn't do.' ___ AP soccer:

Torrential rain and delays can't halt Inter's pursuit of Serie A leader Napoli

(Spada/LaPresse via AP) MILAN (AP) — Torrential rain and hail posed several problems on Sunday but not to Inter Milan's pursuit of Serie A leader Napoli. Amid a thunderstorm and delays, Inter managed a 2-0 win at Torino to move level with Napoli at the top of the Italian league — provisionally at least. Advertisement Napoli was playing Genoa at home later Sunday. If Napoli and Inter are still level after the final two rounds there will be a playoff to decide the destination of the league title. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made wholesale changes to his squad following Tuesday's extraordinary 4-3 victory over Barcelona, after extra time, that sent his team into the Champions League final. The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute with a fantastic goal as Nicola Zalewski gathered Alessandro Bastoni's long pass, with his back to goal, before turning his marker to cut inside and curl into the bottom right corner. Advertisement Rain, thunder and hail The heavens then opened in Turin, making play increasingly more difficult, with heavy rain, thunder and hail. The referee interrupted play shortly before the interval to discuss the situation with the two captains, before resuming to see out the half. The halftime break lasted 30 minutes rather than the usual 15 before the second period started. It took Inter less than five minutes to extend its advantage through Kristjan Asllani's penalty after Mehdi Taremi was brought down by Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. Relegation playoff possibility The fight for Serie A safety could also go down to a playoff match. Advertisement Lecce could only manage a 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona to move level on points with 18th-placed Empoli. Verona is also not safe as it is five points above those two. Elsewhere, already-relegated Monza recorded its first victory since January and only its third of this season, with a 2-1 win at Udinese. ___ AP soccer:
