Hot weather today; Increasing thunderstorm chances ahead
Good morning KELOLAND! It's a cool start to the morning, but much warmer weather is ahead today for much of the region.
Highs stayed in the 60s in much of eastern KELOLAND yesterday, with Watertown staying at just 59. Lower 80s returned to the Rapid City area, with 90s likely today.
We think Sioux Falls will be close to 90 degrees later today with hazy sunshine expected.
Here's a closer look at what you can expect the next few days. First, temperatures today will turn hot ahead of the cold front dropping into northern KELOLAND this afternoon. You can see widespread 90s for many locations. Next, watch the movement of that front by tomorrow morning. We think that front will drop south of Sioux Falls, which means much cooler weather for tomorrow. Also, a band of scattered rain should develop along a Spearfish-Pierre-Huron-Marshall line during the day. We can't rule out a chance of rain near Sioux Falls as well. Stronger t-storms development may take place in clusters south of I-90, with a marginal risk of severe weather. We expect a new round of mainly nocturnal thunderstorms to develop in southeastern KELOLAND overnight into Thursday morning. Then, a new round of thunderstorms should develop in western SD during the day, with thunderstorms spreading east Thursday afternoon and evening. Locally heavy thunderstorms are possible along with a marginal risk of severe weather.

Rain totals through Friday should be significant in parts of KELOLAND. For example, the range of 1-2″ looks very likely for Sioux Falls, with locally higher totals likely where thunderstorms train or cross over the same areas more than once. We'll continue to monitor the high-resolutions details as we add more information to these rain forecasts. The numbers on average are not as high for western SD, but we still expect pockets of showers and thunderstorms starting tomorrow.
