Inclusive Youth Leadership Summit held in Southeast Kansas

MCCUNE, Kan. — Folks with Special Olympics Kansas are teaching the next generation of students about the importance of leadership. More than 65 students from seven schools attended the Inclusive Youth Leadership Summit at Lodge 400 in McCune. Southeast Kansas unites for Special Olympics basketball and cheer event Middle and high school students with and without disabilities were paired up with peers to discuss various leadership and inclusion experiences they could bring to their own school. Some ideas include student-run businesses on campuses, like coffee shops or slushy stations. What makes this event so unique, is that it's only done at one other location in the entire state of Kansas. Volunteers take the 'Polar Plunge' for Special Olympics Kansas 'To me really, it's good to be a leader,' said Myah Norton, Girard High School student. 'Always include others because you don't know, what they're going through. You don't know what's going on in their life. But even just saying hello can make someone's day,' said Stephanie Fees, Iola High School student. 'It's just a good environment to be in. You're surrounded by people who have the same goals excuse me, have the same goals as you,' said Augi Mooneyham, Girard High School student. 'I love being able to teach them things about what they have and just having fun with it,' said Bailey Glaser, Girard High School student. $2 mil bond for connection to December shooting in Manhattan, injuring 3

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – Law enforcement have arrested one person connected to a shooting that injured three people in Manhattan late last year. The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) shared in a news release that just before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 a 22-year-old Manhattan resident was arrested in connection to a shooting that took place on Dec. 1, 2024. The RCPD report that its License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras played a 'critical role' in identifying the alleged suspect's vehicle that was linked to the shooting. Officers were able to locate and apprehend the individual without any troubles. The 22-year-old Manhattan local was arrested on the probable cause offenses of the following: 12 counts of attempted murder in the first degree. Two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Criminal damage to property. Unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits. According to RCPD, the individual's total bond is $2 million. NE Kansas gears up for Polar Plunges to support Special Olympics Kansas Just before 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, officers responded to gunshots in the 1800 block of Claflin Road. The RCPD later found three people with gunshot injuries. This is an ongoing investigation; we will release additional information when it becomes available. NE Kansas gears up for Polar Plunges to support Special Olympics Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Communities in northeast Kansas are getting ready to support statewide Special Olympics with a cool fundraiser. Special Olympics Kansas is preparing for its coolest fundraiser of 2025, the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is one of the organization's biggest fundraising opportunities that supports more than 5,500 athletes across the Sunflower State. 'Your contribution and involvement helps athletes achieve their goals on & off the field, have healthier lifestyles, and a sense of inclusion in their community.' Statement excerpt from Special Olympics Kansas website Kansas families can now apply for summer grocery assistance There are nine Polar Plunges taking place in the next couple of months in the Sunflower State. In Topeka, the plunge will take place at West Ridge Mall on Saturday, Feb. 8. Registration for the event will start at 8 a.m., the Polar Plunge will take place from 9-10 a.m. and a silent auction will be from 11 a.m. to noon. The Polar Plunge in Manhattan will take place at noon on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Tuttle Creek State Park swim beach. Registration will open at 10 a.m. and the costume contest will start at 11:45 p.m. In Emporia, people can are going to take the plunge at Mouse Lake, 1000 Topeka Street.
