2019 Volkswagen Golf R on Bring a Trailer Stands Out with a Six-Speed Stick and a Spektrum Hue
The seventh-generation VW Golf R is prized among Volkswagen enthusiasts. 2019 is the final year for the gen-seven Golf R. This example also sports a custom paint color from VW's short-lived Spektrum program. The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf was something of a high-water mark for the breed, in the same way that the 997-chassis Porsche 911 is still sought after by enthusiasts. Sure, the cars got faster, but they also got less involving to drive and certainly less discreet. The all-wheel-drive Golf R variant was at the top of the lineup in both performance and price. It was a pretty special car, and for a while VW offered a way to make it even more special. Bring a Trailer This 2019 Golf R up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos) not only has the six-speed manual you want, it's one of the few cars ordered though Volkswagen's Spektrum program. That special order catalog let buyers choose from a staggering 40 different paint options, at a cost of $2500. This one is Moss Green, and it's one of only five ordered into the U.S. Bring a Trailer In a comparison test between a 2019 Golf R and a 2019 Honda Civic Type R, we opined that you'd be better off keeping that $2500 in your pocket and going for one of the five standard colors. In retrospect, that was wrong. The chance to personalize your performance hatch was a bargain at the time. Porsche's paint-to-sample program, for example, will set you back $13,140 for anything more exciting than metallic red or blue on a Macan. VW's Spektrum paint options ranged from teal to deep purple, and now that the current R is only available in blue or black, it's worth trying to track down an older one. Bring a Trailer This car is unmodified except for the aftermarket OZ 18-inch wheels, and it comes with the stock 19s included. Green over black is just aces on a Golf of this era, muted but unusual enough that VW enthusiasts will clock the secret handshake. Remember when Germany knew how to do subtle performance better than anyone? That's this generation of Golf R. The mileage is decent at 45,000, and the R came with lots of features as the top of the Golf range. Mechanically you've got that six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive to put the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine's 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque to the ground. For laid-back cruising, there's a Fender stereo, adaptive cruise control, and heated bucket seats. Bring a Trailer As a fly-under-the-radar practical hatchback that's very fleet of foot, the Golf R is easy to like. Throw in the manual transmission for a bit more driver engagement and a special color that'll have you looking back over your shoulder every time you park it, and it's peak hot VW. The auction ends on May 28.
