Saints share highlight videos from team paintball outing: 'It's all strategy'
NFL teams try all sorts of team-building strategies this time of the year -- there's a reason it's called "organized team activity" and not "practice" when players report for work. In previous years, the New Orleans Saints have buddied up to go bowfishing, bowling, or try other group activities. This year players went out to play paintball, and head coach Kellen Moore joined them. It looks like a great time; the Saints shared a couple of videos highlighting the players' reactions and some of the day's funnier moments. For his part, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders regretted leaving cover, laughing and holding up his yellow paint-smeared helmet for the camera: "I ran out in the middle and got smoked. It hit me square in my eyeball." Advertisement Other guys saw it as a great learning opportunity. Quarterback Spencer Rattler said afterwards, "It's all strategy, it's all the will you've got. It's tiring and it's hot out here too." Seeing guys covering each other and coordinating movement through the obstacles on the field is entertaining, but it goes a long way towards building up camaraderie in the locker room, too. And here's a better look at the different teams: Hopefully it makes a difference. The team is in a rough state five years into the post-Drew Brees era, having fired their last head coach and parted ways with who they thought could be their franchise quarterback, and they need new leaders to step up. Moore participating means a lot. Maybe live-fire experiences like this can help guys learn to trust each other, work together, and win a lot of football games in the fall. Report: Saints QB Jake Haener (oblique) out 'couple of weeks'
May 22 - New Orleans Saints quarterback Jake Haener will miss "a couple of weeks" after sustaining an oblique strain, ESPN reported Thursday. Haener suffered the injury while throwing extra passes during Wednesday's OTA practice. Per ESPN, an MRI revealed a strain but no tear of the oblique for Haener, who is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. He likely will be involved in a three-way competition with rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler for the starter's role. Shough was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft last month, while Rattler was a fifth-round pick in 2024. Derek Carr, the team's starting quarterback the last two seasons, announced his retirement on May 10 due to a right shoulder injury. Haener, 26, completed 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards with a touchdown and an interception in eight games (one start) last season. He was selected by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media

Tyler Shough is the betting favorite to win the Saints' starting quarterback job
Saints coach Kellen Moore says his team will have an open competition to determine its starting quarterback. But the betting odds suggest that rookie Tyler Shough enters that competition as a heavy favorite. Shough is the favorite at multiple sports books taking bets on the quarterback who will take the first snap of the season in Week One. Shough's odds are at about -300 at various sports books. Spencer Rattler is considered Shough's closest competition with odds around +200, and Jake Haener is an extreme long shot at +3000. Advertisement Derek Carr's retirement left the Saints with the NFL's most inexperienced quarterback room,, but the 25-year-old Shough probably enters the league more prepared to start than most rookies. He had a long college career with three years at Oregon, three years at Texas Tech and one year at Louisville, and when the Saints drafted him they knew Carr's shoulder injury was serious enough that they might need Shough to play immediately. Rattler was a 2024 fifth-round draft pick who started six games as a rookie last year when Carr was injured. Haener was a 2023 fourth-round pick who started one game with Carr out last year. The Saints went 0-7 in games started by Rattler and Haener. Shough will have to prove himself in offseason work, training camp and the preseason, but if he looks like he's making progress, Moore is likely to let the rookie take his lumps and see if Shough has what it takes to develop into a franchise quarterback the Saints can build around.

Report: Derek Carr's camp gauged outside interest before retirement
May 16 - Several weeks before he announced his retirement, then-New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was putting out feelers to other NFL teams, ESPN reported Friday. Carr's representative spoke with at least two teams that may have had interest in signing a veteran quarterback on the eve of the new league year, according to the report. The front offices of those teams were "made aware" that Carr could be open to finding a new team. Carr was entering Year 3 of a four-year, $150 million deal he signed with New Orleans in 2023. ESPN reported that Carr had not been given formal permission to speak with other teams earlier this year. However, he retired from the NFL last Saturday for medical reasons. The Saints said Carr had a labral tear and degenerative rotator cuff damage to his right throwing shoulder. The timing of Carr's injury news, which was first reported in April, left some questions. Carr said he began experiencing discomfort in that shoulder since a Dec. 8 game against the New York Giants in which he hurt his left, non-throwing hand. The Saints have a new regime in place with head coach Kellen Moore replacing Dennis Allen, who was fired after a 2-7 start to the 2024 season. New Orleans has quarterbacks Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and second-round draft pick Tyler Shough on the roster now. --Field Level Media

New Orleans Saints make shock decision to sign scandalized rookie QB after Derek Carr's retirement
In the wake of the retirement of their starting quarterback, the New Orleans Saints are signing an undrafted rookie who last played at a community college. Hunter Dekkers has signed with the NFL team after impressing coaches during a tryout at their rookie minicamp, per multiple reports. Dekkers will be one of four quarterbacks competing for a roster spot - with veterans Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener being joined by second-round draft pick Tyler Shough from Louisville. All four of those players could potentially see time in the aftermath of the shock retirement of starting quarterback Derek Carr. Dekkers has prior Division-I college experience, having replaced Brock Purdy as the starting quarterback of Iowa State. However, he was forced to transfer to the JUCO level after he lost his NCAA eligibility due to illegal gambling. Dekkers was found to have placed a $15 bet on one of his own team's games in the 2022 season. Dekkers spent last season at an Iowa community college. He was previously the starting quarterback at Iowa State (above), but lost his eligibility for placing bets on his team's games. That year, Dekkers had completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,044 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions for the Cyclones in a 4-8 season. He was set to be the starter in 2023, but the scandal meant he didn't play. In his place, Rocco Becht started for the Cyclones. In Dekkers' one season with Iowa western CC, he put up an 11-2 record, threw for 3,806 yards and tossed for 32 touchdowns and ten interceptions. Carr's sudden retirement casts a bleak outlook for a Saints team that was already projected to struggle in 2025. Now, without a true starting quarterback, New Orleans could already look to tank for the 2026 NFL Draft. New head coach Kellen Moore revealed that Shough, Rattler, and Haener will all be fighting for the starting spot - and that they might all see starting time in the regular season. Last year, the Saints finished last in the NFC South with a 5-12 record. That earned them the ninth overall pick in the draft, which they used to pick offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr out of Texas.
