The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong mourns the death of Pope Francis
The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong announced the passing of Pope Francis, expressing profound sorrow over his death.
Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., the Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong, extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the diocese following the Pope's death on Monday afternoon.
Pope Francis, born in Argentina, was elected as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI who resigned in February of the same year. At the age of 76, he became the first Jesuit pope and the first from Latin America. Before his papacy, he served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires starting in 1998 and was made a Cardinal in 2001.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis was a fervent advocate for interreligious dialogue and global peace. He was committed to significant reforms within the Holy See, including promoting the participation of women in decision-making processes. His leadership was characterized by a deep respect and affection from church members.
In September 2023, Pope Francis made a notable visit to Mongolia, which highlighted the ongoing relations between the Vatican and China. His efforts in fostering dialogue and understanding between different faiths were central to his mission.
One of his significant acts was the proclamation of the Bull of Indiction 'Spes non confundit' for the Jubilee Year on December 24, 2024, during which he opened the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
This act marked the commencement of the 2025 Jubilee, symbolizing a renewal of hope. Pope Francis encouraged all to become 'Pilgrims of Hope,' especially those disheartened, during the Jubilee Year.
Details regarding the Condolences Service and Memorial Liturgy for Pope Francis will be forthcoming.
