Spires boss wants to repay faith shown by fans

PETER Schroeck wants to repay the faith shown by the fans when Oxford Spires welcome Sheffield Tigers in the Premiership this evening. Spires began May with a double victory over Birmingham Brummies, but then lost at home to Belle Vue Aces last week. Peter Kildemand top-scored for Spires with 9+1, and has gained a new average. He will drop to reserve, while Craig Cook moves up to No 2, with Erik Riss at No 3 and Charles Wright at No 5. READ ALSO: New averages mean changed line-up for Spires Spires team manager Schroeck said: 'One of the positives from last week was the form shown by Peter Kildemand, leading our scoring last week along with the ever-reliable Charles Wright. 'Peter will move to reserve against Sheffield, and just like Craig Cook, he has the experience to score well from No 6 and give us that extra strength at reserve. 'As for the meeting against Sheffield, we do need to make up for last week's defeat to Belle Vue. 'We're doing our best to stay positive and a win would lift the spirits of everyone in the Spires camp and also get us back on target to making sure we are winning at home. 'I thank our fans for their patience and continued support. There's a lot we can be proud about at our club, and our supporters are a big part of that. We'd love nothing more than to repay their faith with a victory over Sheffield.'

Spires kick-start season with double victory over Brummies

OXFORD Spires kick-started their season with a double Premiership victory over Birmingham Brummies. Spires registered their first win of the campaign with a 49-41 victory at Sandy Lane on bank holiday Monday, and backed that up with a 47-43 win at Birmingham to also pick up an aggregate bonus point. New signing Craig Cook scored 7+1 at Oxford Stadium, including the match-winning ride with victory in Heat 14, and then notched a 15-point maximum at Perry Barr. At Sandy Lane, Spires took control after two early 5-1s and had an eight-point lead after Heat 8. Birmingham introduced Tobiasz Musielak in Heat 9, and he joined Michael Jepsen Jensen for a 5-1. However, Spires skipper Maciej Janowski fired round the outside on the opening lap of Heat 10 and joined Erik Riss for a 5-1 that restored the eight-point lead. Rohan Tungate and Charles Wright won the next two races before Janowski held off pressure from Jepsen Jensen and Musielak in Heat 13. With Spires still eight points in front, Peter Kildemand took a tumble while fighting for third with Jason Edwards in Heat 14, but he quickly cleared the track to allow Cook to secure the meeting victory. Janowski and Riss, who combined to keep Musielak at the back in a shared Heat 15, ended the meeting as Spires' top scorers on 11+2. In Heat 6, Cook powered clear on the opening lap, defeating Brummies No 1 Musielak in the process. A 5-1 for Cook and Tungate in Heat 9, with the previously unbeaten Keynan Rew trailing in last, levelled the scores at 27-27. The middle pairing of Kildemand and Wright were rock-solid with three 3-3s, and both defeated Musielak in Heat 10. Janowski and Riss moved Spires in front for the first time with a 5-1 in Heat 11, inflicting the first defeat on Jepsen Jensen in the process. Cook took his fourth win in Heat 12, while Wright came through for third, as Spires moved six points ahead with a 4-2. Janowski then won his second Heat 13 of the day in style. Brummies rolled their last throw of the dice in Heat 14, with Musielak coming in as a tactical substitute, but was there no denying Cook, who shot away from the unfavourable outside gate to complete his 15-point maximum, as he and Kildemand took a match-winning 4-2. Brummies took a consolation 5-1 in Heat 15, with Kildemand suffering a puncture.

Rockford egg hunt provides fun-filled afternoon for children of all abilities

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The second annual Rockford Easter Egg Hunt saw children of all ages on the hunt for over 100,000 eggs Sunday afternoon. Screw City Jeeps 815 hosted the event in hopes to be on track to bringing a Guinness World Record back to Rockford. 'Well, a long time ago, Rockford used to be the Guinness Book World Record Holder for the largest Easter Egg Hunt,' Screw City Jeeps Founder Randon Spires said. 'We're always trying to think of what we can do positively for the community. We did a little research, and we said, maybe not this year, but within five years we could bring this record back to Rockford.' The record is 500,000 eggs at a hunt. The day was full of activities for all ages and abilities. At the start of the day, there was a reserved time for children with disabilities and their families to hunt for eggs, something that Spires felt strongly about including. 'We feel like all children should be included regardless of who you are, disability or abilities,' Spires said. 'Everyone is always welcome.' Jamey Funk is an administrator for Screw City Jeeps and a parent. 'We're a special need parent too, so it was a big deal for us.' Funk said. 'We've been to many egg hunts. As a special needs parent, you have a hard time because your kids get trampled. It's too loud, or there is too much going on.' Funk said there was a lot of support and emotion throughout the day. 'It's hard to keep a dry eye,' Funk said. 'We do a lot, and we try to make it good for our children and special needs parents. It's [an] overwhelming response. The families are thanking us everywhere they go. They've never had this. We want to keep it going.' Spires said the organization is planning to continue this tradition with hopes of bringing the record back home. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Spires debutant impresses in first leg defeat

OXFORD Spires have 16 points to recover at Sandy Lane on Thursday after King's Lynn Stars won 53-37 in the first leg of the Premiership Knockout Cup quarter-final. After eight races, the Stars had raced into a 33-15 lead, but new Spires signing Francis Gusts burst past Niels Kristian Iversen and Nicolai Klindt on the opening lap of Heat 9 to join skipper Maciej Janowski for a 5-1. Janowski passed Ben Cook for third place on the final bend of Heat 13 to join race winner Rohan Tungate for a 4-2. Former Spires skipper Chris Harris posted a six-ride paid maximum, and the nearest any Spires rider came to defeating 'Bomber' was in Heats 12 and 14, when Gusts held him back for the majority of both races. READ ALSO: Witches rider finishes on top at Sandy Lane fundraiser meeting Spires team manager Peter Schroeck said: 'It didn't look so good early on, but we had a talk together and we then did much better for the rest of the meeting. 'The boys thought the King's Lynn track was much grippier than it actually was, and it took us a while to get the set-ups right. 'We had some good races, while the performance of Francis was the highlight. He took a 5-1 with Maciej and then gave Chris Harris a real race a couple of times. 'It was the Bomber show. He wanted to make a statement which is what we expected. When you take him away, it was pretty level between the two teams.'

Federal workers see parking price increase as they return to office

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As local federal employees step back into the office, some are already met with a challenge before they get into the door: parking. The White House issued a Presidential Action for 'Return to In-Person Work' towards the end of January. The action from the White House reads: 'Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary.' Kelly Education hosts substitute teacher pre-hiring event in River Market The challenge starts with where to park, then how much it'll cost, Kansas City-based federal employee, Tammy Spires says. 'To our understanding, the administration felt that it would serve the public better if we were in the building five days a week,' Spires shared. As some federal workers get into the routine of returning to work in office every day of the week, some shared parking spots around Kansas City area federal buildings are limited. 'There's no parking. We've been requested to come back into the office full-time five days a week and it's the entire federal workforce that's doing this. There are not enough parking spaces in and around the area of the building.' Spires says parking has always been an issue. She says it's also something she's always had to pay for. 'Parking has always been an issue for us. We've always had to pay for parking but here recently, and I don't understand why, because pre-COVID, we had these same parking places, but for whatever reason now, we just don't have them.' She works in the Richard Bolling Federal Building. She's been a federal worker for over 20 years. Since 2021, she'd been working from home, except for one day a week. Starting this week, she's required to be back in the office full-time. 'I've parked in this lot for years, (it) used to be six dollars before COVID and then after COVID when we came in for one day a week, it went up to nine dollars and then last week it went up to ten dollars. Tuesday, it went up to twelve dollars.' The lot, Spires is referring to, is on located near 12th and Cherry. It's one operated by Mid-Con Management in KCMO. 'How can you go from ten dollars to twelve overnight and what's the justification for that?' Spires asked. Former student sentenced in 2022 Olathe East High School shooting She also said that's not the only lot she says has increased prices recently. Mid-Con Management said there has only been one increase in the last year. That increase came this week. The company wouldn't expand on why the price changed over the last few days. The timeline is also when Spires and so many others went back to work. 'The Richard Bolling Federal Building houses probably, I would say, easily 6,000 employees. The parking lot that they have for the federal building is very limited. They do subsidies for bus, but even the bus routes are being cut, so I mean that's just going to put more and more people in here, in this area.' Spires says there are some exceptions on if you can park at the building (Richard Bolling Federal Building) itself, but you have to qualify. She says you may park at or within the building if you are carpooling or in a management position. However, not everyone qualifies. 'Whether we are in the building or in our house, we are dedicated to our jobs, and we do work. We work very hard to make sure that your checks are there on time, that your housing vouchers are available for you. These are things that we do and dedicate a lot to that job,' Spires added. 'A lot of us feel villainized. People get into this work to help people. We don't get these big salaries. Our benefits, we pay a lot for our benefits. You do this because you want to help your fellow people. So, some of the things that have been said about us is really unfair,' she says as it relates to being a federal worker over the last few months. Drexel firefighter killed after truck crashes into Louisburg hair salon Spires also commented on the appearance of the lot, which Mid-Con Management says there are plans to address and ownership is aware and is making arrangements. Mid-Con Management says it encourages patrons to apply for monthly arrangements, but not all lots offer that option. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
