Spirit Halloween's annual kick-off event killed by ‘supply chain issues'
(NewsNation) — It may not be spooky season yet, but tariffs may have already frightened some of the Halloween fun away. Spirit Halloween announced it won't be holding its annual grand opening the retailer's flagship store in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, because of 'international disruptions and supply chain challenges.' Though the continent's largest Halloween retailer didn't explicitly mention tariffs when announcing the decision, the pop-up shop outsourced costume manufacturing to locations in Asia, per Dragon Sourcing. President Donald Trump's legally contested tariffs have mainly targeted China. Businesses could see tariff refunds, but consumers likely won't Despite the event's cancellation, the company clarified it is far from the cemetery. 'Spirit Halloween is still very much alive, with over 1,500 stores on track to open! We will begin opening stores in mid-August for another killer season,' the chain announced on Instagram. Spirit Halloween says it's canceling its season opening event in Egg Harbor Township due to tariffs
Citing "international disruptions and supply chain challenges," spooky decoration and costume emporium Spirit Halloween announced it is canceling its annual grand opening event, which typically draws a large crowd to the Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, store in the heat of summer. A statement on the decision was posted on Spirit Halloween's social accounts and While Spirit didn't use the words "tariff" or "tariffs" in the statement, international trade has been disrupted in 2025 after President Trump announced wide-ranging tariffs on goods from almost every foreign country, a move that has caused wild disruptions in the stock market and caused many companies to reassess how they do business. Some Halloween lovers traveled from thousands of miles away for Spirit's 2024 season kickoff event and Chopper 3 showed a line snaking around the store outside. Luckily for Halloween lovers, they plan to bring the event back in 2026. Chopper 3/CBS News Philadelphia Spirit says over 1,500 Halloween stores are on track to open in mid-August despite the grand opening event being off. "The engines are on, and we're full speed ahead," Spirit said. Known for its pop-up stores — the company owns no permanent physical storefronts, according to CBS MoneyWatch — Spirit has been praised for the yearly logistical feat in which it opens hundreds of temporary brick-and-mortar locations months ahead of Halloween, staffs and stocks them, and then disappears once the holiday is over. Spirit Halloween also experimented with "Spirit Christmas" stores in 2024, opening 10 locations across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Why Spirit Halloween canceled its annual party in Egg Harbor Township for 2025
Spirit Halloween has delivered horrifying news to its most ardent customers, canceling a celebration that draws thousands of people to launch its spooky season. The Egg Harbor Township firm blamed "international disruptions and supply chain challenges" for the demise of this year's event. It said the party's expected to return in 2026. "In the meantime, Spirit Halloween is still very much alive, with over 1,500 stores on track to open;" the company said in a recent Instagram post. Stores are to begin opening in mid-August. Halloween horror: South Jersey delivers on dreadful decorations Last year's event, which took place Aug. 1 and was dubbed the Carnevil, drew a large crowd to the company's flagship store in an Egg Harbor Township shopping center. It was held for the third straight year "to unveil our best costumes, accessories and decor," Spirit Halloween said in a statement promoting the 2024 party. The free event included games, prizes and entertainment. It offered an "exclusive" swag bag to the first 200 guests after 7 a.m., then distributed numbered lanyards allowing access for 2,500 visitors after the store's ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Other customers were allowed into the store on a first-come, first-served basis until 8 p.m. As a sign of its turnout, last year's party also offered on-site restrooms, a hydration station and overflow parking.
