Dublin bar makes list of 10 best cocktail menus in the world

Dublin's Bar 1661 has been included in a list of the top 10 cocktail menus in the world, curated by the 2025 Spirited Awards. Now in its 19th year, the Spirited Awards highlight exceptional creations and creators across the global bar industry, including individuals, establishments, products, media, and leaders who continue to inspire the global cocktail community. The Northside spot, which opened in 2019 and has since garnered praise for its inventive cocktails, won for its 'We Call This Power', a 28-drink celebration of Irish poitín, Irish drinks, and Irish producers. It gets its name from the year poitín was banned in Ireland, and has been fighting the good fight in the name of the traditional Irish spirit for years since. Located on Green St, Rotunda, the menu is presented to guests in a sleek and polished white-covered menu book, with short descriptions of the cocktails, stylish photographs, key tasting notes and some homages to local community heroes such as Joe Duffy of Duffy's Flowers, to whom the non-alcoholic creation Full Bloom is dedicated. Standouts from the selection include the Belfast Coffee, made with Bán poitín, cold brew coffee, cream, demerara and nutmeg, Parts Unknown, made with Bán poitín, Don Julio tequila, grapefruit, pineapple, mulberry, lime and chilli, and Round Towers, made with Glendalough gin, Micil poitín, aquavit, kiwi, lemon sherbet and celery. The team have also devised a specialised, small-group 28-course liquid tasting menu, which sees just 10 guests sitting around a shared table, enjoying mini versions of the cocktails and nibbles. Speaking about the honour, BAR 1661 owner Dave Mulligan said: "We are humbled to say the least. 'We Call This Power' is our statement of intent as a bar, and to see it recognised at this level makes us incredibly proud. This achievement is a huge team effort from all our staff, and a testament to the fantastic work from our design partners Studio FDDP and Photographer Al Higgins. Here's to the spirit of Irish hospitality, bold, rooted, and unapologetically our own." The win comes at a particularly buoyant time for the team as they were named Innovator of the Year at this year's Irish Restaurant Awards on Monday, 19 May. On top of that, the team recently unveiled Bar 1661's sister bar, The Sackville, which they say is on a mission to bring a touch of glamour back to O'Connell Street with its statement black interiors and elevated classic cocktails.

Spirited Awards lists 2 Minneapolis bars among the best in the country

The Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, the hospitality nonprofit that hosts the annual spirits conference of the same name, has announced the Regional Top 10 Honorees for its Spirited Awards. The awards have honored outstanding work in cocktails since 2007, and this year, a couple of Twin Cities bars are getting some well-deserved recognition. The foundation's list of Regional Top 10 Honorees recognizes the work of individuals and bars/restaurants from around the world, including three regions in the U.S. Among them is Meteor in Minneapolis, which has been listed in two categories: Best U.S. Bar Team - U.S. Central and Best U.S. Cocktail Bar - U.S. Central. The bar was listed for Best U.S. Bar Team in 2024 as well. Meanwhile, the Gavin Kaysen-led Spoon and Stable has been listed in Best U.S. Restaurant Bar - U.S. Central, a category where it was listed in 2024, 2023, and 2022, among other honors it has received from the foundation. That's not the only recognition that Spoon and Stable has received recently. Earlier this year, it was announced that Spoon and Stable bartender Jarod Schiebout is a finalist to compete in the U.S. Bartenders Guild's national competition. The pair of Minneapolis drink hubs, as well as Public Parking in Madison, Wis. (Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar - U.S. Central), are the only watering holes to make the cut from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin. Though, the central region is represented by a broad swath of the country, with finalists in states that include Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas. The 2025 Spirited Awards will be celebrated in a ceremony at the Tales of the Cocktail conference in New Orleans on July 24.

OLCC breaks ground on new, 347,000-square-foot Canby warehouse

PORTLAND, Ore. () — Construction crews have finally begun work on the Oregon Liquor Cannabis Commission's new, 347,000-square-foot warehouse. The agency and lead contractors with JE Dunn Construction broke ground on the facility on Wednesday. The distribution center is expected to help meet the demand for distilled spirits. 3 Portland bars are up for Tales of the Cocktail Foundation's Spirited Awards According to Executive Director Craig Prins, the current warehouse has been operating at full capacity and therefore affecting the commission's ability to generate revenue. 'This new facility, with its advanced material handling systems and expanded footprint, will allow us to better serve Oregon businesses and consumers efficiently and responsibly,' Prins said. OLCC reported that the warehouse will replace the pre-existing space that has been opened for operations in Milwaukie since the 1950s. Officials previously planned on constructing a new headquarters in addition to the warehouse, but it decided to relocate its headquarters to a Portland office in early 2024 after . The agency and Oregon's Department of Administrative Services agreed to pay the contractors a for the new facility last December. OLCC Chair Dennis Doherty said the purchase is a 'long-overdue investment.' 'It ensures we can meet growing consumer demand while maintaining our commitment to responsible alcohol regulation,' Doherty said. 'With JE Dunn's expertise, we're confident this facility will serve Oregonians well for decades to come.' SERT activated in NW Portland after standoff suspect found, taken into custody Clackamas County Commissioner Paul Savas added that the distribution center also has the potential to increase Canby's workforce, in addition to the 65 jobs it has already provided. JE Dunn Construction is expected to finish preparing the site sometime this month. The facility is projected to be partially complete by June 2026, and fully operational two months later.
