‘We know a lot of suffering is going on': The annual Spring Health Fair returns
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For the second time, a local church is hosting its annual health fair, taking a holistic approach to wellness. The fair will cover mental health, physical health, and financial well-being.
The Spring Health Fair, organized by members of Walking in God's Grace Ministries, is this week, and Pastor Nate McFarland and his community engagements team member, Tenia Bradley, are excited to bridge the gap between their community and the healthcare system.
'We know a lot of suffering is going on,' said Nate Mcfarland, Senior Pastor at Walking in God's Grace Ministries, 'people are not aware of what they can do and what they can't do especially about their health.'
Tenia Bradley, one of the fair's organizers, says they want to share knowledge with the folks who need it. 'You want to get people in there who know about breast cancer, you want to get people in there who know about Sickle cell and prostate cancer, and all those different areas,' she said. 'Diabetes, Alzheimer's — all those things are going on in our community.'
At last year's first-ever Spring Health Fair, they had 42 vendors. This year, they have 50. At the event, community members can find information about medical needs like mammograms and health insurance, get a free haircut, sign up for a raffle giveaway, and even learn about life insurance.
'I heard a lot about deaths going on in our community, and a lot of people are doing GoFundMe pages,' said Bradley. 'So, we want to help people to understand that life insurance doesn't have to cost a whole lot to get basic life insurance. Nobody wants to get rich off of somebody dying.'
Ultimately, the two want people fired up for the event, ready to absorb all the resources at their disposal.
The Health Fair is this Friday, starting at 10 AM, at the Montgomery Neighborhood Center.
