Spring of Youth – K-drama Episode 1 Recap & Review

Episode 1 Episode 1 of Spring of Youth begins with a young boy practising dance moves when his partner's stick hits him in the eyes. He loses his sight but thankfully, a cornea transplant lets him see again. The boy, Sa Gye, ends up becoming a famous idol by joining the band, The Crown. We see one of the band's concerts which is followed by a lavish celebration of their success. During the party, Sa Gye drinks a lot and suddenly gets flashes from a different memory featuring a car and a rainy street. After he's in bed, a voiceover from him explains that he gets a recurring dream about a girl which features a specific melody. Also, his eyes always open at 5.45 every morning, on the dot. Well, things go downhill from here as he gets a visit from Yeon Seung-su (an employee at Jo & Jo Entertainment) who informs him that he attacked the CEO of the company, Jo Sang-heon, last night while drunk. The video has gone viral and the CEO is in the hospital. He goes to the company's headquarters and bumps into Kim Bom on the way. She's a young girl whose necklace falls down. The pendant is a small music box which happens to play the same melody from Sa Gye's dreams. He hears it but can't see where it's coming from. At the office, he is told to step away from the band for two months and attend school at Hanju University, where he is technically a student. Meanwhile, Kim Bom meets Ji-na, an employee of Jo & Jo Entertainment and also happens to be Jo Sang-heon's daughter. She offers to buy Bom's song for the company and Bom agrees, although she leaves a note on the contract saying that the payment is mediocre. Bom goes back home where she lives with her aunt and cousin. We learn that her aunt took a loan out against the house and they need money to pay it back. At the hospital, Jo Sang-heon recalls how Sa Gye attacked him and said that he was there six years ago and saw what Sang-heon did. Sa Gye, with no memory of that night, goes to Hanju University. He and Bom end up caught in the rain and her necklace falls down again. This time, Sa Gye realises where the music is coming from and asks Bom about it. She says it's her song and then leaves with her friend, Seo Tae-yang, when he turns up with an umbrella. We soon learn that Tae-yang has a crush on Bom. The next day, Sa Gye is welcomed by a group of fans at school. Gyu-ri escorts him to the theatre and film department, where Sa Gye offers a disastrous take on Hamlet. Over the next few days, he throws his money around at the university. Meanwhile, Bom does up one of the rooms in the house and opens it up for renters in order to help with the loan. Sa Gye then finds out from another student that Kim Bom works part-time at a restaurant. He finds her but she keeps running off, not wanting to talk to him. They're once again interrupted by Tae-yang who flips Sa Gye over his shoulder to get him to stop pestering Kim Bom. However, he ends up at the music department and finds that Bom and Tae-yang are part of a band. And they're looking for new members. Sa Gye asks to apply and ends up in an argument with Tae-yang, who is known as the university's Sa Gye. They decide to battle it out. Bom even agrees to tell Sa Gye about her song if he wins. Tae-yang plays a number of different instruments but Sa Gye does plenty with his own guitar. However, he gives up when his guitar string breaks and Tae-yang is announced the winner. Elsewhere, Jo Sang-heon makes an inquiry about a person. He receives photographs of Kim Bom and the person investigating tells him that Sa Gye seems close to her. At the university, Sa Gye puts up a notice looking for his own band members. He then goes to Bom's restaurant and is mesmerised when she plays the piano. After her shift, he pesters her to join his band. Jo Sang-heon watches them together. That night, he visits Sa Gye and tells him to either go to the military or study abroad. Sa Gye refuses to do either and Sang-heon says he'll be cutting ties with Sa Gye. The next day, Tae-yang's bandmates mess with Sa Gye and take a video that makes it look like he's beating them up. The issue spirals and Sa Gye is forced to publicly apologise and leave The Crown. He also sells his house and things to pay off cancellation fees. His mother is in the US and he walks through the streets till he comes to Bom's house. He gets flashes of memories about the place. He sees the renter sign and speaks to the owner, who turns out to be none other than Kim Bom. An epilogue of Spring of Youth Episode 1 shows Bom and Tae-yang walking away after the encounter with Sa Gye when she suddenly runs and looks for him. Turns out, she recognised him as Gyu-ri had made her attend his concert. She was quite mesmerised by him. Sa Gye had thrown a soft toy in the crowd and said that whoever gets it can go on a date with him. The toy had ended up with Bom. The Episode Review Spring of Youth Episode 1 feels like the series really wanted to get all the exposition out of the way. The episode covers Sa Gye's story from his early ambitions and eye surgery all the way to his roaring success and eventual downfall. Sa Gye himself is often running around and the plot feels similarly structured. It sets up Kim Bom as his love interest and hints at a connection between them while also establishing Tae-yang as a rival. However, this premise feels all too familiar. Anyone who's watched a few K-dramas can see how the mysterious memories will connect with Sa Gye's eye surgery as well as his connection with Kim Bom. It's all too predictable which is not a great look for the first episode. Also, Lee Seung-hyub does not look anything like a college student. However, there is still quite a lot of potential in seeing how everything unfolds and how these small hints at fate and magic come into play.
