Woman found dead near Springfield bike path identified as 45-year-old

A woman whose body was found near a bike path Tuesday morning was identified as 45-year-old Meggan Meredith. Meredith's death is being investigated as a homicide, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni confirmed to MassLive Friday. Officers responded to the 1500 block of Hall of Fame Avenue around 8 a.m. Tuesday for a report of an unresponsive person located near a bike path, Springfield Police said. The woman was declared dead shortly after. Police had previously only said it is being investigated by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit as an unattended death. The Chief Medical Examiner's Office has been tasked with performing an autopsy on the body, Springfield Police said. The discovery of the woman and another woman found dead in Forest Park in January sparked online rumors there might be a serial killer. But, Gulluni said, the crimes are not believed to be connected. 'At this time, there is no indication that these incidents are connected to each other or are ... part of a larger public safety threat,' Gulluni said Friday. 'We are actively working every lead and deploying every available resource.' Gulluni feels it is his responsibility to let people in the area know if they need to add extra safety precautions to their daily lives. But that isn't the case right now. 'These two murders, the one in January and the one this week, present nothing that would make me say to people, 'Be extra careful,'' he said. He said he and his wife live in Springfield and feel safe, and other people should, too. 'Springfield is safe. This region is safe,' he said. Still, he knows how important it is to solve both cases as quickly as possible. 'We work night and day until we solve these cases,' he told MassLive. 'And [these] two recent cases are certainly no exception to that.' And if something comes up during the investigations, his office will let the public know. 'If that changes, I consider that my responsibility to let folks know,' he promised.
