‘It was all falling apart': Jenna Ortega reveals real reason for Scream 7 exit
Jenna Ortega has opened up about her exit from Scream VII. The 22-year-old Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star, who joined the horror franchise in 2023 for its sixth movie, was expected to reprise her role as Tara Carpenter, the younger sister of Melissa Barrera 's Sam, in the forthcoming installment. However, in November 2023, reports broke that Ortega had dropped out of the slasher due to 'scheduling conflicts' with the second season of her hit Netflix series, Wednesday. News of her exit came the day after Barrera had been fired from the film over comments she made about Israel - Palestine on social media. Ortega is now dispelling the rumors surrounding her Scream VII departure, confirming in a new interview with The Cut that 'it had nothing to do with pay or scheduling.' 'The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart,' she explained, sharing that by the time she had made her decision, Scream VI 's directing duo, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, had already dropped out. 'If Scream VII wasn't going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn't seem like the right move for me in my career at the time,' the You alum added. Scream VII, which is due for release on February 27, 2026, has faced a mountain of trouble since Barrera's firing. The In the Heights breakout, 33, was axed from the film after several social media posts she had made regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict were accused of being antisemitic. 'Spyglass's stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,' a Spyglass spokesperson said in a statement at the time. In the aftermath of her firing, Barrera released her own statement: 'First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people … I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me.' Barrera later reflected on the 'dark' period in a November 2024 interview with The Independent. 'It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to reevaluate everything,' she admitted. 'There were times where I felt like my life was over.' In the month after both Barrera and Ortega's exits, director Christopher Landon, who had signed on to helm the new edition, announced he had also quit. 'I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream VII weeks ago,' he wrote in a later-deleted X post. 'This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on. 'I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope [original Scream director Wes Craven's] legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing, and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow,' Landon said. The franchise's original screenwriter, Kevin Williams, has now taken over directing duties on the seventh film. While Scream VII 's plot remains under wraps, it will welcome the return of franchise legacies Scott Foley, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O'Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos.

Saronic unveils plans for autonomous shipyard
Texas-based Saronic Technologies announced Tuesday it raised $600 million in private funding to build an autonomous shipyard it's calling Port Alpha. The company plans to use the facility to grow its fleet of medium- and large-class autonomous surface vessels amid demand from the Pentagon for more drones of all kinds, including ships. 'It is going to be the most advanced shipyard in the world,' CEO Dino Mavrookas told reporters. 'We're going to build it right here in America. We're going to build it from the ground up.' Saronic hasn't yet picked a site for Port Alpha, but the company is working with state governments throughout the U.S. to find the right fit. Texas and the Gulf Coast are among the regions the firm is closely exploring, according to Mavrookas. The company declined to offer specifics on how much the project would cost, saying only that it planned to funnel 'billions and billions of dollars' toward the effort over its lifecycle. Mavrookas would not commit to a timeline for when the facility would open its doors, but said he expects it to be operating 'well within five years.' 'This is not something that we're just thinking about,' he said. 'Our goal is to get it open as fast as possible with shipbuilding production lines, rolling things out and into the water.' Founded in 2022, Saronic has raised more than $850 million and is valued at $4 billion. In just three years, the firm has developed three uncrewed vessels: Spyglass, Cutlass and Corsair — a 24-foot-long boat that it unveiled last October. The company sees its systems as a solution to the U.S. Defense Department's push for more uncrewed systems and Port Alpha as a means for boosting the Navy's shipbuilding capacity. The service's latest 30-year shipbuilding plan calls for 381 battle force ships — an increase from its current fleet of 295 — and an additional 134 unmanned surface vessels over that time period, including 40 large-sized vessels. The service is also pushing toward a fully operational unmanned fleet by the mid-to-late 2030s. At the same time, the Navy's shipbuilders are struggling to maintain cost and schedule requirements, many of them years behind on delivering due to a number of factors, including a shrinking workforce and a lagging supply chain. Asked whether he expects Port Alpha to put additional strain on that base, Rob Lehman, Saronic's chief commercial officer, said the autonomous vessels the company is building won't rely on the same manufacturing techniques, hardware and workforce that traditional shipbuilders developing manned platforms. 'We're looking at a new class of vessels with a new way of building them, unburdened by some of the constraints that the current shipbuilding industrial base is hindered by,' he said. 'We plan on approaching the Navy with ideas, concepts and capabilities rather than just waiting and being told what to do.'

‘Dog Man' Leads Super Bowl Weekend With $13.7 Million
Universal/DreamWorks' 'Dog Man' will hold on to the No. 1 spot as the annual slowdown in business on Super Bowl weekend is expected to take its toll. The animated family film is earning an estimated $13.5 million in its second weekend, dropping 62% from its $36 million opening weekend. With a $54 million 10-day total, the film now will face competition from the four-quadrant 'Captain America: Brave New World' and the family threequel 'Paddington in Peru' next week. In second is the Sony/Screen Gems/Spyglass horror film 'Heart Eyes,' which is opening to $8.5 million from 3,102 theaters. Produced by Spyglass on a reported $18 million budget, Sony set the film ahead of Valentine's Day in the hopes of building word-of-mouth for the film as a date movie for horror lovers. So far, there is some upside for 'Heart Eyes' as the film earned a B- on CinemaScore — same as the recent horror hit 'Nosferatu' — while earning solid Rotten Tomatoes scores of 82% critics and 79% audience. There's less upside for 'Love Hurts,' Universal/87North's action film starring Ke Huy Quan in his first lead role. Released on 3,055 screens, the film is opening to just $5.8 million. Also produced on a reported $18 million budget, 'Love Hurts' won't be a major loss for Universal and 87North. But the signs for a comeback aren't bright as critics panned the film with an 18% Rotten Tomatoes score while audiences are mixed at 64% with a C+ on CinemaScore. In fourth is Disney's 'Mufasa,' which continues to leg out with $3.9 million in its eighth weekend. With $235 million domestic and $671 million worldwide, it has passed Paramount's 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' as the top grossing release of December 2024. Warner Bros./New Line's 'Companion' completes the top 5 with a $3 million second weekend. The strong reception for the sci-fi horror film has not translated into wider interest as the film has sunk 68% from its opening weekend, grossing just $15.4 million domestically. More to come… The post 'Dog Man' Leads Super Bowl Weekend With $13.7 Million appeared first on TheWrap.

Scott Foley Joins Cast Of ‘Scream 7'
EXCLUSIVE: Scott Foley (Scream 3, The Girls on the Bus) has joined the cast of Scream 7 from Spyglass and Paramount Pictures. Details regarding his character and the film's plot are currently under wraps. However, Foley is already part of the Scream universe having portrayed antagonist Roman Bridger, the film director and half-brother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who was revealed to be the Ghostface Killer of Scream 3. More from Deadline Mark Consuelos Joins Cast Of 'Scream 7' Brad Pitt To Star In & Produce 'Heart Of The Beast', David Ayer's Action Adventure Pic For Paramount Mason Gooding Teases 'Scream 7' Return & Calls Neve Campbell The "Godmother Of The Genre" Foley's casting comes with its own set of questions because Roman was killed by Dewey (David Arquette) at Sidney's request. Roman has faked his own death before so it's plausible that he could reprise the role in the present or perhaps in flashback form in the past if he is deceased. Could Roman have a long-lost twin? This is Scream after all, so if he returns as a ghost (face killer?) or a zombie, it would not shock most. There are so many possibilities here that I defer to franchise superfans to figure out. Foley joins the previously announced legacy cast members Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as well as Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown, alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O'Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale and Mark Consuelos. Franchise creator Kevin Williamson is directing with Guy Busick (2022's Scream and Scream VI) writing. Project X Entertainment's James Vanderbilt, William Sherak and Paul Neinstein (2022's Scream and Scream VI) are producing. The long-running horror franchise previously generated four feature films including Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000) and Scream 4 (2011), directed by the late Wes Craven. It relaunched with the fifth installment, Scream, in 2022. The latest outing, Scream VI, was released theatrically worldwide in March 2023 and holds the franchise record for highest domestic box office gross with more than $108 million and has taken in more than $169 million worldwide. Collectively, the Scream franchise has earned more than $900 million in worldwide box office receipts. Foley most recently starred in Max's political drama series, The Girls on the Bus, opposite Melissa Benoist and his Scream 7 co-star Consuelos. Foley can also be seen in the recurring role of, Dr. Seth McDale, on the 3rd season of ABC's Will Trent. In 2019, he headlined and produced ABC's action dramedy Whiskey Cavelier. Foley starred as Jake Ballard in six seasons of ABC's hit drama, Scandal. His other extensive TV credits include the WB's Felicity, Fox's The Big Leap, HBO's True Blood, ABC's Grey's Anatomy, CBS' The Unit and NBC/ABC's Scrubs. Foley made his feature film debut in Wes Craven's Scream 3 for Dimension Films. He followed that with a leading role in Dimension Films' Below opposite Matthew Davis and the indie feature Rennie's Landing opposite Ethan Embry and Peter Facinelli. Foley's other film credits include Let's Kill Ward's Wife, which he wrote, directed and produced, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, the TV movie Final Vision and Netflix's Naked. Next, he will star in Netflix's romantic comedy, La Dolce Villa, which will premiere on February 13th. The film, directed by Mark Waters, follows Foley's character Eric Field, as he travels to Italy to prevent his daughter from renovating a villa. Foley is repped by Independent Artist Group, Atlas Artists and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern Best of Deadline 'Bridgerton' Season 4: Everything We Know So Far 'Knives Out 3': Everything We Know About The Second Rian Johnson Sequel 2025 Awards Season Calendar: Dates For Oscars, Spirits, Grammys, Tonys, Guilds & More

Watch Rory McIlroy's ‘slam dunk' hole-in-one
Rory McIlroy marked the first round of his PGA Tour year with that rarest of holes-in-one: an ace that did not even take a bounce or a roll before disappearing into the hole. After starting on the 10th at Spyglass Hill in the AT&T Pro-Am, the World No 3 was one-under after six holes and bemoaning two three-putts on the 11th and 14th, a pair of par-fives that he hit in two. The best method to avoid putting woes is to allow yourself the luxury of leaving the flat stick in the bag, as McIlroy proved on the 119-yard 15th. 119 yards ➡️ IN!For the second time in his career, @McIlroyRory has an ace on the PGA TOUR! — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 30, 2025 This was the 35-year-old's third hole-in-one in professional competition and, undoubtedly, the most unusual of the trio. The 'slam dunk' with a wedge into the cup required the greenkeepers to repair the turf around the pin, but by then McIlroy had already celebrated with his playing partner, Ryder Cup team-mate Ludvig Aberg. Having achieved his first ace as a nine-year-old at his home course of Holywood in Belfast, McIlroy had to wait until his eighth year as a pro, at the 2015 Abu Dhabi Championship, to repeat the trick. His first on the PGA Tour came at the Travelers Championship in 2023 – but there was not another eight-year itch until he completed the hat-trick. Perhaps McIlroy would have preferred to wait until he teed it up on the revered Pebble Beach course in the second round on the Monterey Peninsula. But the Northern Irishman would not have been moaning, in his first appearance on the United States circuit for five months. He finished his first round six under par, one behind the early pacesetter Justin Rose and two off leader Russell Henley. Despite the California tournament featuring amateurs accompanying the pros in the first two rounds – McIlroy is joined by investment banker Jeff Rhodes – the 72-holer is one of the Tour's $20 million 'signature events'. McIlroy arrived in confident mood after finishing fourth at the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this month on his seasonal bow. McIlroy was not the only one celebrating an ace, with his Irish Olympic team-mate Shane Lowry following suit at Pebble's signature seventh hole. AN ACE FOR THE LAD!@ShaneLowryGolf with an ace on one of the most iconic holes in golf @ATTProAm. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 30, 2025 It was the third hole-in-one of Lowry's PGA Tour career that completed something of a 'holy trinity' of par-three hole-outs, having also achieved the feat at two of golf's most famous holes in the 17th at TPC Sawgrass and the 16th at Augusta National, home of the Masters. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler is making his first appearance of 2025 after suffering hand injuries because of a bizarre accident with a wine glass when trying to roll pasta on Christmas Day. The American, also playing his first round at Spyglass, finished one back from McIlroy with a five-under-par 67.
