Raiders' Patrick Mahomes trade whisper sends NFL fans into frenzy—GM's comments ignite firestorm over league ethics

The Las Vegas Raiders, haunted by Patrick Mahomes' dominance (Getty Images) For years, the Las Vegas Raiders have lived a recurring nightmare: Patrick Mahomes. Twice a season, they face the architect of their AFC West woes, a quarterback who has single-handedly carved out a dynasty in Kansas City and consistently left the Silver and Black in his wake. His dominance – 12 wins in 14 outings against Las Vegas, racking up over 4,000 passing yards and 33 touchdowns – has pushed the Raiders to the brink in their quest for a franchise quarterback. But how far were they willing to go to escape Mahomes' shadow? Could they, against all odds, have ever considered acquiring him? Raiders risked it all for Patrick Mahomes? Insider bombshell rattles AFC West Raiders GM John Spytek recently gave an honest account of the team's rigorous two-year hunt for a starting quarterback. He confirmed their absolute commitment. "Pete [Carroll] and I were completely serious," Spytek stated, "when we said we'd explore every possible avenue for a quarterback." This intensive search, he shared, involved bold inquiries. "We contacted various teams just to gauge interest," he admitted, jokingly adding, "I'd be hesitant to even mention some of the names we inquired about trading for, but you never know.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was Everyone's Dream Girl In 90's, This Is Her Recently. Investructor Undo Naturally, the burning question from reporters was immediate: did this wide-ranging dragnet extend to Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach? In a league where "desperate times call for desperate measures," the idea of somehow luring Mahomes away from their bitter rivals – if you couldn't beat him, why not join him, right? – might seem like a fleeting fantasy for a beleaguered fanbase. However, Spytek quickly squashed any such speculation. "We didn't go that far, you know?" he admitted, acknowledging the sheer implausibility of such a blockbuster, intra-division trade. The notion of Patrick Mahomes donning the Silver and Black, while perhaps a tantalizing dream for some, was never a realistic avenue for the Raiders' front office. Eventually, Spytek and Coach Pete Carroll's deep search led them to veteran quarterback Geno Smith from the Seahawks via trade. Spytek expressed confidence, noting Smith's strong performance and history with Carroll. "With Geno in particular, Pete has a history with him, and he's played his best football for Pete," Spytek stated. "And he played well last year, too.' The cost of securing Smith's services was substantial, involving a third-round draft pick and the absorption of the $75 million remaining on his contract. Even with the team's disappointing 4-13 finish last season, Spytek maintains a positive outlook on the team's trajectory under Smith's leadership. He stated, "It's a work in progress, but he's been awesome so far." Mahomes' trade was off-limits, so they're banking on Geno Smith. This investment is their move in the ongoing AFC West battle. Time will tell if Smith brings the stability needed to contend with the division's top team.

What is the Biggest Roster Decision Facing the Raiders?

The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to get back on track next season. The Raiders are looking to get back to their winning ways in 2025, and this offseason, they have taken the necessary steps in that direction. The first move was a huge one. And that was hiring head coach Pete Carroll to take over the team and finally get them the veteran leadership and stability, the Raiders have been searching for. The Raiders then went on to hire a good general manager in John Spytek. Spytek brings experience as well, even in his first role as a general manager. Carroll and Spytek were also able to get defensive coordinator Patrick Graham back in Las Vegas and on their staff. And on the offensive side, they were able to hire offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. This coaching is a great one and can put the Raiders in a position to be successful in 2025 and beyond. Carroll and Spytek have been making moves all offseason long. Their goal when they got the job in Las Vegas was to get going right away, and that is exactly what they have done. They got right to work, and they did not want to wait around for a couple of seasons to finally get the right players on their roster. They did an excellent job in finding the players this offseason that best fit what they are trying to do with the Raiders and give them a better chance to win games. And in the 2025 NFL Draft, they added more young and talented players that will help them next season and in the future. As a result, Sports Illustrated's answer for the biggest roster decision facing the Raiders was clear: Do the Raiders make a move for a cornerback? "For a stretch, the Raiders appeared to have the weakest receiving corps in the NFL, but that looks more promising now after the second-round selection of wide receiver Jack Bech," said Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated. "It also helps to have dangerous weapons, such as tight end Brock Bowers and rookie running back Ashton Jeanty. With that said, the Raiders' biggest remaining roster hole might be at cornerback. Jakorian Bennett, Eric Stokes and Darnay Holmes make up the bulk of the cornerback rotation. Alexander and Ramsey are currently available on the trading block." The Raiders can make more roster moves if needed, as the season gets closer. But what we have seen from Carroll in the past is that he wants to develop his players and has belief in them, and that they can get better as the season goes on. Raiders Reportedly Poach Another High Level Executive From Eagles

The Las Vegas Raiders are practically unrecognizable from the team that won just four games a season ago. Owner Mark Davis cleaned house once again this offseason and brought in general manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll. Fortunately for the fan base, that has been just the tip of the iceberg in terms of changes. Spytek has completely overhauled the front office since the 2025 NFL Draft ended. He parted ways with two longtime Raiders executives in favor of Brian Stark and Johnathon Stigall. He also recently added Anthony Patch, who was Howie Roseman's right-hand-man for the Philadelphia Eagles over the last several years. Las Vegas Raiders HC Pete Lee-Imagn Images On Thursday, the team announced another key addition to their front office. This time, they named Brandon Hunt their Vice President of Player Personnel. He previously served as the senior director of scouting for the Philadelphia Eagles. Advertisement Hunt is a major addition for the Raiders' front office, as the Silver and Black need to massively overhaul their roster. No team has been better at building a team through the draft than the Eagles, who have been to multiple Super Bowls in recent memory and just defeated the Chiefs for the crown last year. Spytek is putting together an elite front office, which is an incredibly underrated aspect of building a winning NFL franchise. The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Denver Broncos scout Brian Stark as their assistant general manager, poaching a front-office asset from a division rival. The Raiders announced the transaction on Wednesday. They also hired New York Jets scout Johnathon Stigall as their assistant director of college scouting. Advertisement The hirings are made under first-year general manager John Spytek, who worked as a scout for the Broncos from 2013-15 at the same time as Stark. The Raiders hired Spytek in January after firing previous general manager Tom Telesco. After leaving the Broncos in 2015, Spytek spend nine years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in multiple roles including assistant general manager and vice president of player personnel. Spytek was with the Buccaneers when now-Raiders minority owner Tom Brady quarterbacked Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl championship after the 2020 season. Stark was a candidate for Denver's general manager opening in 2021. He remained on staff in Denver as the Broncos' director of college scouting after the Broncos hired George Paton as general manager. Stark now joins the rival Raiders with a promotion to assistant general manager under a new regime led by Spytek and first-year head coach Pete Carroll.
