St. David's hospitals in Austin rank among best in nation
Several Austin-area hospitals made the cut on Premier's 100 Top Hospitals rankings for 2025. The annual program seeks to determine the nation's top hospitals based on clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health. The Business Journals is partnering with Premier Inc., a technology-driven, health care improvement company, to publish the annual Premier's 100 Top Hospitals rankings. St. David's Medical Center in Austin ranked No. 2 in the country among large community hospitals, followed by St. David's South Austin Medical Center at No. 11 and St. David's North Austin Medical Center at No. 14, according to the data. The health system was also recognized in the medium community hospitals category with its Round Rock medical center ranked at No. 9. Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle also came in at No. 19 among medium community hospitals. Additionally, St. David's Medical Center in Austin was one of 17 hospitals in the country to receive the Everest Award. The award recognizes hospitals that have both the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement in the five years of trend data analyzed by the researchers. To select this year's 100 Top Hospitals, researchers evaluated 2,599 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals using publicly available Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare website. Hospitals do not apply for the rankings. Compared to their peers, this year's 100 Top Hospitals had: 39% fewer inpatient deaths than peer hospitals. 26.5% fewer patients with complications. 32% fewer health-care-associated infections. 18% lower inpatient expense per discharge. 4 Austin-area hospitals make Newsweek's list of top 400 in U.S.
Newsweek and global data platform Statista have ranked the world's top hospitals for 2025. No Austin-area hospital made that top world list, but we did have four that were recognized as among the top hospitals in the United States: St. David's Medical Center at No. 144 Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Round Rock at No. 181 Ascension Seton Medical Center at No. 310 Ascension Seton Hays Medical Center in Kyle at No. 400 The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, ranked No. 1 for the United States and the world. No. 2 in the world was the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, and No. 3 was Toronto General in Canada. Only two Texas hospitals made that top 250 in the world list: Houston Methodist Hospital was No. 72, and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas was No. 240. The list of the top 250 hospitals is compiled after ranking the best hospitals in 30 countries. In compiling its rankings, Newsweek and Statista surveyed medical experts, looked at patient data, hospital metrics and the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures survey.
