St. George's day

What's the Deal with St. George's Day? Every April 23rd, England celebrates St. George's Day — or at least, it's supposed to. Compared to St. Patrick's Day or even Bonfire Night, St. George's Day doesn't get a ton of attention, but it's still a day that's rooted in some pretty epic legends and a whole lot of history. So, Who Was St. George? The guy we now call St. George was actually a Roman soldier, born way back in the 3rd century in what's now Turkey. He became a Christian and was later executed for refusing to give up his faith — which is why he's considered a martyr and a saint. But let's be honest, most people remember him for the whole dragon-slaying thing. According to the legend, George killed a dragon that was terrorizing a town, saved a princess, and convinced the people to convert to Christianity. Is it true? Probably not. But it makes for a great story, and over the centuries, that legend helped turn him into a symbol of bravery and heroism. Why Is He England's Patron Saint? St. George became England's patron saint during the medieval period, especially after knights and crusaders started bringing his story back from the Holy Land. His red cross on a white background became England's flag, and it still flies today — especially during sporting events or, well, when England wants to show a bit of national pride. How Do People Celebrate? Truth be told, St. George's Day isn't a huge deal for most people — it's not even a public holiday. But in some places, especially small towns or communities with a strong sense of English identity, you'll still see a bit of fanfare: Parades with people dressed as knights and dragons with people dressed as knights and dragons Traditional food (think roast dinners, maybe a pint at the pub) (think roast dinners, maybe a pint at the pub) Church services St. George's flags flying from windows or rooftops flying from windows or rooftops And sometimes people wear a red rose, England's national flower Some folks would love to see it celebrated more, kind of like how the Irish go big for St. Patrick's Day. There's even been talk now and then about making it a national holiday. No luck yet, though. Fun Fact: England's Not the Only One St. George is also the patron saint of Georgia (yes, the country), Ethiopia, Portugal, and even Catalonia in Spain. In Catalonia, they turn St. George's Day into a kind of romantic holiday where people give each other books and roses. Not a bad tradition, honestly. A Day That's Quietly Meaningful Even if it's not the loudest holiday on the calendar, St. George's Day still means something. It's about courage, standing up for what you believe in, and holding onto traditions. And hey — any excuse to share a cool story, fly a flag, or enjoy a proper roast is a win. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

St George's Day: The Midlands celebrates the patron saint of England

St George's Day celebrations have been taking place across the region, to celebrate the patron saint of England. In Nottingham, the day was marked with what's considered to be the biggest England flag in the country, outside the Council House in Market Square. The flag measures sixty by thirty feet. A celebration was also held at one of the city's oldest pubs, Ye Olde Salutation Inn, which is thought to date back to around 1240. The Royal Society of St George held their annual party with flags, music and bunting on display, as part of the day's events to mark English history, culture and heritage. The 23rd April is the anniversary of St George's death. Even though St George never stepped foot on English soil, history says he heroically ended up slaying a dragon, and rescued a princess from being eaten. And in their gratitude, the people of the town converted to Christianity. St George is England's patron saint, and is shared with other places like Ethiopia, Catalonia, Aragon, Bulgaria, Russia and Portugal. "We feel a bit afraid to be proud - we shouldn't be" People celebrating St George's Day in Nottingham shared their views about celebrating the patron saint. England faces a 'never-ending fight for our flag and values', Starmer warns Elsewhere, students across the region dressed up to mark the day. Little Trinity Nursery in Kidderminster painted shields and swords adorned with the English flag. Nursery Manager Gaynor Carter said: 'The children were incredibly imaginative, and it was wonderful to see them engage with the story of St George. 'Celebrating this day allowed us to participate in a national tradition and instil a sense of pride and history in the little ones.' Meanwhile visitors at Oak House Museum in West Bromwich dressed up for the occasion. And later tonight (23rd April), the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up red and white to mark St. George's Day.

Keir Starmer Calls For St George's Flag To Be 'Reclaimed' From Southport Rioters

Keir Starmer has called for the English flag to be 'reclaimed' from the rioters who went on the rampage in the wake of last summer's Southport killings. In comments marking St. George's Day, the prime minister said: 'We must never concede it, because it is an expression of our values and our patriotism.' Violence erupted last August after three young girls were stabbed to death by Axel Rudakubana while attending a Taylor Swift-theme dance class in the school holidays. Misinformation was spread online about the killer's background, leading to widespread rioting across England. Speaking at a St. George's Day reception in 10 Downing Street on Tuesday night, Starmer said there is 'a never-ending fight for our flag and what it represents' He said: 'There are people trying to sow division in our communities, people taking the red and white of our flag, like the bunting downstairs, with them, as they throw bricks at businesses. 'The day after the terrible Southport incident last year, I went up to take the opportunity to shake the hands of the first respondents of police and ambulance workers, you'll now have seen what they all faced. 'By the time I got back to London that very day, we had people throwing bricks at the very same police officers I was shaking hands with. And that's why the battle for our flag is really important because that is what happened and that was only last year. So, we have to fight for our flag and for our values.' The PM said the clean-up operation carried out by ordinary people in the wake of the riots demonstrated the best of the country. He said: 'Rebuilding walls, repairing damage and it's in that spirit that we reclaim our flag and that was incredibly uplifting to go from rioting to people coming out to do what they could for our country. 'So that's what we must do for our country, for English decency, honour and fairness. Wrench it out of the hands of those who want to divide this nation and reclaim it for good. 'Because that flag doesn't belong to me as prime minister or any group or political party and that is the point. It belongs to all of us, to England, in all its wonder and diversity. And we should be proud of that flag, we must never concede it, because it is an expression of our values and our patriotism.'
