‘An issue of democracy': Activists against book bans hold panel discussion in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Across the nation, schools and libraries are opting to ban books in response to community feedback on the subject matter they portray. Those in support of these bans argue it's a necessary step in protecting young children and families. Local community members against book bans came together Wednesday evening for a discussion at St. John Fisher University, during which a panel of literature experts spoke on why they believe book bans are harmful to society. Associate Professor of English at SUNY Brockport Cody Miller was on the panel and explained why he believes this discussion to be important now more than ever. 'Access to books through both public libraries and public schools is inherently an issue of democracy,' Miller said. 'When we limit access to books and information, you can't be a well-informed, well-rounded citizen to then participate in the democracy at large.' West Irondequoit School Board Member Tamara Wall, Henrietta Library Director Adrienne Pettinelli and Churchville-Chili student and activist Jaise Newman were also on the panel. Newman says the discussion of book bans is personal to him. 'There's a lot of books that I really love and have done important things for me,' Newman said. 'It's a little scary to hear that books that I love, my friends love or even my English teachers love are at risk of being banned.' Some of the sub-topics discussed by the panel include censorship, autonomy, diversity and inclusion. Event organizers also summarized how they believe book bans have impacted culture in Rochester since the 1950s. Newman and Miller share the perspective of books continuing to hold heavy influence in the way we function as a society, especially when it comes to policy-making. 'I think everybody's read something that's really connected with them, and people see the power books have and that they can impact students and young people,' Newman said. The panel also discussed New York Senate Bill S6350B, which is in Assembly review. If passed, it would implement 'The Freedom to Read Act', requiring the Commissioner of Education, school systems and libraries to establish policies to adhere to when selecting and removing books from shelves statewide. The full Senate bill can be found here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Bills To Return To St. John Fisher For 2025 Training Camp

There was a time in league history where most organizations would operate their training camp at a local college. The Buffalo Bills like that feel ... And so Back to School it is. The Bills announced they will be returning to St. John Fisher University for 2025 training camp. They have held training camp at St. John Fisher University since 2000, but missed the last few years because of COVID-19. Advertisement St. John Fisher University is over an hour and a half away from Buffalo, but it is secluded enough for the Bills to not only run practices, but keep their fans engaged with their work. Buffalo will have open practices later announced where fans can attend. Having their practices at a university will only make things easier for the fanbase in Western New York. Will this continue moving forward? With a new stadium expected to be open in 2026, the Bills could look to reorganize their practice situation in the future as well. Buffalo has become one of the more popular teams around the league. Having their own facility, much like teams in New Jersey like the Jets and Giants, will be something the organization pushes to have more training camp practices there. Advertisement Until that point, though, St. John Fisher University is a perfect place for them. And that will continue to be the case, we bet, moving forward for the organization as they look to finally get over the hump and win a Super Bowl this year. ‘I'm super proud': Catholic students optimistic following election of Pope Leo XIV

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) – On Thursday, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel in Rome, signifying the election of Pope Leo XIV as the new leader of Catholicism. Students and Faculty at St. John Fisher University are optimistic about what his experiences could mean for their faith. Maddie Donlin, a senior at Fisher, shared her thoughts on the news. 'I'm super proud,' Donlin said. 'I think a lot of us are super proud to have an American born Pope.' Donlin is not the only one excited for what's to come under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV. Gracie Carella shared her initial reaction and the joy it's brought her. 'I think it's really exciting, especially with our generation,' Carella said. 'Pope Francis did a lot with the younger generation, a lot with service, community and bringing people together. And I think Pope Leo is going to do the same thing.' The newly elected Pope comes with years of experience as a priest in Peru. Following this, he served as the Prefect for the Dicastery of Bishops under Pope Francis. Cabinet Chair at St. John Fisher University Father George Smith sees the ways in which this could inspire a new era for the Catholic church. 'Pope Leo in his past has been a teacher. He's been the leader of his religious order, the Augustinians, but most importantly, he's been a missionary,' Smith said. 'We need new popes to address the needs of the new world that we live in, so I think we're going to see a pope that responds in a very particular way to those who are most in need in our society.' Both Carella and Donlin believe, from being on campus, that one community in need are young Catholics who have lost touch with their faith in recent years. They hope to see that change under Pope Leo's guidance. Now that Pope Leo has given his first public blessing, a formal ceremonial mass is expected to take place in the coming days. We'll provide coverage of Pope Leo's first days in the role on-air and online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
