Fire bans in place across Newfoundland to continue into Monday
A fire ban covering several Newfoundland municipalities will continue into Monday. The St. John's Regional Fire Department said in a news release Friday that a fire ban in St. John's, Mount Pearl and Paradise will remain in place this weekend. It prohibits open fires and the use of backyard fire pits, chimneys and charcoal barbecues. Propane fire pits and barbecues can still be used. The ban has been in place since May 30, when active wildfires were burning out of control in Labrador and much of the province was under very high or extreme fire risk. A fire ban also remains in place in Gander, Conception Bay South and Portugal Cove-St. Philip's. As of Friday, parts of the northeast Avalon to Buchans in central Newfoundland were under a very high fire risk. Glovertown to Gander and as north as Fogo Island were designated at an extreme fire risk. Three active wildfires remain burning in Newfoundland and Labrador — two in Labrador and one in Newfoundland — but all are deemed under control.
