History teacher struck off for sex with pupil
A history teacher at a private school has been struck off after he had regular sex with a female pupil who was a boarder. Thomas Marriott was also the rowing coach at St Peter's School at Bootham, York, where he worked between 2007 to August 2011. A Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) misconduct panel heard he coached the girl in rowing and then taught her in the sixth form during which time an inappropriate relationship began. The TRA panel heard they began having sex while the female was still a pupil and it continued after she left. A decade later in 2021 she reported the matter to police by which time Marriott, now aged 39, was deputy head teacher at Princethorpe College at Rugby, Warwickshire, but left three months after starting the role. Marriott admitted three counts of sexual activity with a child at York Crown Court in 2023 and was sentenced to 21 months in jail, suspended for two years. The panel said: 'Mr Marriott had delayed the relationship from becoming fully sexual until Pupil A turned 18 which suggested that he had known what he was doing was wrong. 'At the time there was evidence of sexual motivation by Mr Marriott. The relationship became fully sexual in nature whilst Pupil A was in the sixth form. 'Prior to this he required Pupil A to keep the relationship secret which suggested an element of planning and grooming.' The panel said it was concerned about his 'reckless and unprofessional actions in conducting sexual activity on school premises on multiple occasions'. The panel heard he did not know his conduct was illegal as he was recruited straight from university without a teaching qualification. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
