Grand Designs project hailed the 'best ever' after three barns were transformed is on the market for £1.5million

A stunning Grand Designs project hailed 'the best ever' has gone on the market for the first time for £1.5million. It took more than two decades for owners Sue Charman and Martin Whitlock to lovingly restore Green Dragon Barn, nestled in the picturesque South Hams area of Devon. The couple first appeared on Grand Designs back in 2001 with the three connecting barns, which were three centuries old and had been left almost uninhabitable. The popular show revisited it 20 years later and discovered it had been turned into a breathtaking five-bedroom home that has been labelled a 'pioneering eco-project'. It has now been listed for sale for £1.5million by Stags and has already attracted strong interest from potential buyers eager to snap up the lavish country retreat. When Grand Designs went back to the stunning country pile, midway between Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, host Kevin McCloud said: 'This is a home lovingly, painstakingly, time-consumingly transformed. 'Resplendent with 20 years of devoted care.' On its listing, Stags described it as 'the perfect home'. It added: 'Green Dragon Barn is an exceptional detached property created from three linked barns, quietly positioned in the rolling countryside between Totnes, Dartmouth, and Kingsbridge. 'Lovingly crafted over 20 years by its visionary owners, the house blends eco-conscious design with striking architectural detail, including a soaring green oak frame, cob and stone walls, and a distinctive combination of slate and thatch roofing. 'The accommodation is both generous and highly flexible, with light-filled interiors designed to adapt to modern family life, multi-generational living, or creative workspaces. 'At the heart of the home is a spectacular 30-foot reception space, framed by natural materials and open to the gardens and views. 'Set in approximately 1.3 acres, the property includes mature landscaped gardens, a sloping paddock with an orchard, a double garage, detached stone workshop with solar panels, and a private hot tub areaideal for entertaining or simply enjoying the peace and seclusion. 'This is a rare opportunity to own a home of genuine architectural significance and enduring quality.' Martin and Sue moved to Devon in 2000 and described the barn as a 'complete wreck' when they bought it. He added: 'It was three barns built together over three centuries, and a bigger project than we were planning, but it allowed us to really go to town and create some stunning rooms.' The site already had permission for conversion to two houses but the couple created a new scheme to make it into one. And despite taking 20 years to complete, there was never any thought of giving up, Martin said. He added: 'Although it took 20 years, it wasn't 20 years of work on the house. 'We moved into two rooms in 2001 and gradually expanded out from there as we found time to do the work in our busy lives. 'So every so often there would be new rooms or features to enjoy. It was a real adventure.'

Young footy-playing father is mourned after his 'unexpected' death leaves close-knit team in shock

The football community is mourning the tragic passing of Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook Stags player Zach Horner. The father-of-four has been remembered by friends, family and team-mates as a 'fiercely loyal' individual. Mr Horner had also worked as a coach for his two son's U6 team and was described as an 'energetic' and 'kind' individual. A friend of his family, Michelle Loader has now created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Mr Horner's family. On the page, Ms Loader wrote: 'It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Zach Horner, a beloved member of our community, a dedicated father of four, and a passionate rugby league player at the Stags. 'Zach was not only a passionate player, and fiercely loyal teammate but also an enthusiastic coach, excited to be guiding two of his sons in the U6's team.' The GoFundMe Page also featured a picture of Mr Horner posing with several of his Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook team-mates. The fundraising page has, at the time of writing, raised $6,520. 'His energy, kindness, and love for his family and rugby will leave a lasting impact on all who knew him,' Ms Loader added. 'Zach's unexpected passing has left his family in a time of grief and financial hardship,' the page adds, stating that the funds raised will go towards providing his partner and children with support and help cover funeral costs. 'Every donation, big or small, will make a difference,' Ms Loader adds. 'Your generosity will help relieve some of the financial burdens and allow Zach's family to focus on healing and honouring his memory. 'Zach's spirit and love for rugby league and his club will always live on, and we are grateful for any support you can offer.'

Leadership renewal at BG Tampines Rovers as chairman Desmond Ong steps aside

ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR SINGAPORE – For the first time since 2017, BG Tampines Rovers will see a change in leadership, after lawyer Desmond Ong stepped down as chairman of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) side to make way for Japanese investment banker Shungo Sakamoto. Ong, 56, told The Straits Times that Sakamoto, who has been the Stags' vice-chairman since 2024 after joining the management committee in 2023, became the new chairman on June 1. Ong will still be a member of the club's management committee. Ong, a managing partner of law firm Solitaire LLP, said: 'I've always wanted to step away as soon as we found the right person to take over. Over the years, there have been people who have indicated their interest in wanting to come in and take over, but this was the right time and we have (found) the right person. 'In his own way, he's shown to be cerebral and passionate and he has supported local football for a number of years. So I'm very confident and comfortable that the club will be in very good hands under his stewardship.' Ong also clarified that stepping down as Stags chairman was not due to his new role with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) – in April, he became deputy president of the new FAS council for the 2025-29 term. Sakamoto, 38, a Japanese citizen who immigrated to Singapore in 2019, is not the first foreigner to be a club chairman here. Current Albirex Niigata chairman Daisuke Korenaga is also Japanese. Sakamoto is the executive director and founder of investment company Sakamoto Capital. Previously known as Black Clover, the firm has been a sponsor of both Albirex and the Stags for the 2023 and 2024-25 campaigns. A social footballer, Sakamoto has spent the past few years helping to arrange casual football competitions among Japanese expats. It was through these social matches that he was introduced to the Albirex hierarchy before befriending Tampines midfielder Kyoga Nakamura, who introduced him to the Stags' management committee. Sakamoto said he is eager to build on the club's foundation, tap on the partnerships – such as the three-year collaboration with Thailand's BG Pathum inked in 2023 – and bring about benefits with his own connections to Japanese football. He is confident that the Stags will continue to push the Sailors and has set his sights on winning the SPL in the coming years. Their last league title was in 2013. In the latest campaign, Tampines were runners-up in the Singapore Cup and the SPL, where they finished eight points behind the Sailors. 'We want to beat the Sailors, to be the No. 1 team in Singapore, and I want more fans to support us and, hopefully in the future, our home stadium is always crowded,' said Sakamoto. Meanwhile, Ong admitted he had not expected to stay as club chairman for so long. He expressed happiness in helping to build a consistent pipeline of national players. He highlighted the bold decision to offer long-term contracts to players as a way to improve job stability. He is proud of keeping the club competitive domestically and representing the nation in continental competitions despite financial limitations. The Stags, whose last major trophy was the Singapore Cup in 2019, have finished in the top three of the SPL since the 2022 season. Ong said when he replaced lawyer Krishna Ramachandra in 2017, the club were $3 million in debt. Together with his committee members, they worked hard to reduce it. As a result of him putting his own money into the club, the bulk of the debt is owed to Ong, who is comfortable with the arrangement as it allows the club to operate without external financial pressure. He also praised his coaching staff and management team for consistently punching above their weight. He then delivered a farewell jab, saying: 'Whenever anybody loses to us, they say 'Tampines is so well resourced, they are a rich club'. I say to them show me your books and I'll show you my books. We get the same subvention as everyone else. 'A lot of our players became national players on my watch. So to all the people out there who are tempted to say that we are a rich club who only sign national players, can you please come look for me, show the books and then we can compare.' Mansfield sign midfielder Hendry from Tranmere

Mansfield Town have signed Regan Hendry on a two-year deal after the midfielder ended discussions about staying with League Two side Tranmere Rovers. The 27-year-old Scot was among eight players in talks with Rovers about new deals earlier this month, but he has opted to move up to League One with the Stags. Hendry, who came through Celtic's youth teams before going on to start his senior career with Raith Rovers, last featured in England's third tier with Forest Green Rovers in 2023. And it was at Mansfield on the final day of the 2021-22 season that Hendry helped Forest Green clinch the League Two title. He moved to Tranmere on loan by the middle of the following season, before making his stay at Prenton Park permanent in the summer of 2023. Stags boss Nigel Clough said the central midfield is a player that the club has "admired for some time". "He's an all-round midfield player who can play two or three different roles and will complement the midfielders who we already have in the squad," Clough told the club website.
