Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is May 10
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — On May 10, you're encouraged to fill grocery bags with nonperishable food items and place them by your mailbox before mail delivery. Letter carriers will retrieve your donations while delivering mail and then take your donations to Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.
This is the 33rd year the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is hosting the 'Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive.' Nationwide, the NALC has collected almost 2 billion pounds of food since the effort began in 1993. This event is the nation's largest single-day food drive.
Second Harvest says the timing of this food drive is crucial as school will soon be out. Beginning June 3, they will provide summer meals each weekday at nearly 85 locations. Summer is a tough time for children who typically receive free breakfast and lunch at school and an even more stressful time for the parents to try to compensate for the lack of these daily meals.
Stamp Out Hunger blue grocery bags will be placed in mailboxes to remind neighbors to donate nonperishables on May 10.
