EXCLUSIVE Australia's 'Human Lie Detector' Steve Van Aperen reveals why the Stan Original Series Poker Face gets deception detection spot on

A former police officer turned deception expert - known as Australia's 'Human Lie Detector' - has revealed why the Stan Original Series Poker Face gets the science of lie detection remarkably right. Steve Van Aperen, a keynote speaker who specialises in the psychology behind liars, told Daily Mail Australia that Poker Face, which stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman who can instantly spot a lie, earns his professional tick of approval. 'There's a lot of validated science behind it. That is, loss of eye contact, concealment and masking. They obviously had experts in it who trained the actors,' Steve began. 'A lot of the things I saw, so far as evasion and blocking, are very consistent with what happens in the real world. It's quite well written.' He said he was particularly impressed that Lyonne's character, Charlie Cale, used real-world techniques to spot deception. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'She asks the right questions, she's like a modern-day Columbo!' Steve added that he admired how the character always trusted her gut instinct - a key factor when it comes to detecting dishonesty. 'You know how you meet someone and think they are full of it? Where does that come from? What is it about human nature that makes us like that?' he said. 'It is all about psychology, understanding why people do what they do.' He also believes Poker Face can serve as a useful guide for viewers looking to sharpen their own lie-spotting skills, thanks in large part to the observant nature of Lyonne's character. 'You will get an understanding of if you ask somebody a question and they don't answer it, that's a red flag,' he said. 'Are they engaging in behaviours where they are objecting rather than denying? This is quite well done on the show based on my experience working on homicide cases.' In the Stan series, Lyonne plays Charlie Cale, a casino worker with an uncanny ability to detect lies. Each episode sees her interacting with a range of characters - many of whom are trying to deceive her - and she relies on a mix of body language, verbal clues and gut instinct to uncover the truth. Steve finished by saying he was very impressed by one aspect of the show, which got the science behind lie detection accurate. 'One of the first things I teach people - and we see this in the show - is that a good interviewer asks the right questions,' he said. 'If your question is not clear from both sides it allows a deceptive person room to wriggle out.' The American crime-comedy show features an all-star cast, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Chloë Sevigny, Adrien Brody, Nick Nolte and Australian actress Danielle Macdonald. It is perfect viewing for fans of other Stan crime comedies such as Good Cop/Bad Cop. Cailah Scobie, Stan's Chief Content Officer, revealed in 2023 that the streaming service devised a strategy to commission premium international projects to attract a wider audience. After the success of its Aussie shows The Tourist and Wolf Like Me, Stan is now in a position to create more high-quality content to be broadcast outside of Australia. All ten episodes of Poker Face series one and the first four episodes of series two are available to stream now only Stan, with a new episode being released every Thursday until July 10.

EXCLUSIVE Love Triangle star Chloe reveals her biggest regret after her tryst with Bernie after affair was exposed during bombshell reunion

Love Triangle's Chloe Hannigan has opened up about her tumultuous journey on the Stan Original dating show, which ended in an unexpected 'love square'. Speaking to Daily Mail Australia after filming the much-anticipated reunion, Chloe, 25, laid bare her experiences and expressed regret about how one particular aspect of her time on the show unfolded. What started as a straightforward journey quickly spiralled into a complex emotional web when Bernie slipped Chloe a secret note, adding another layer to an already complicated situation with matches Beck and Emma. Chloe admitted she was blindsided by Bernie's actions, which were surprising given their limited interaction. 'I was in a love square by the end of it,' Chloe said. 'I absolutely did not expect this to happen at all – and even watching the episodes back, seeing Bernie so interested in me from literally day one … I had no idea. It was very shocking.' However, the unexpected development eventually led to reflections on the kind of love she desired. During the final reunion, Chloe's secret affair with Bernie was exposed, much to the shock of her co-stars. 'To me, it wasn't ever an option that I'd end up with someone other than Beck or Emma,' she said. 'I'm very structured and organised, so when things didn't go to plan, it threw me off.' The kiss with Bernie may have been spontaneous – but the impact was powerful. 'He couldn't keep his hands off me,' she laughed. 'But more than that – he made me feel validated and heard. It was the first time I felt that all season.' Reflecting on the moment, Chloe revealed her biggest regret was not immediately being transparent with Beck and Emma after receiving Bernie's letter. 'To me, it wasn't ever an option that I'd end up with someone other than Beck or Emma,' she said. 'I'm very structured and organised, so when things didn't go to plan, it threw me off' 'If I was to do it all again, I think my main difference would be the second I received that letter, I would have sat down with Beck and Emma and been transparent with them about what had occurred,' Chloe admitted. Despite the constraints of reality TV production, she feels she should have followed her gut instinct to discuss the situation openly. Chloe's journey on the show was marked by heightened emotions and a rollercoaster of feelings. She admitted to feeling rejected, shocked, and rushed in her various interactions. The reunion rekindled these emotions, with Chloe acknowledging the complexity of her experiences, 'Retrospect is a wonderful thing and unfortunately for me, this is how the cookies crumbled.' Despite the challenging circumstances, Chloe said she was grateful for the friendships and lessons learned along the way. The reunion, an explosive mix of shocks and emotions, left audiences with much to ponder regarding relationships and personal growth. As viewers process the revelations from the reunion, Chloe stood by her decisions, emphasising that her feelings were real and unfiltered. 'I have no regrets with my decision,' she affirmed, reflecting on her choice to steer towards authenticity in her journey on and off the screen. Watch every episode of Love Triangle only on Stan.

Unseen footage exposes shock betrayal on bombshell Love Triangle Season 3 reunion

If you thought the Married At First Sight reunion was jaw-dropping, brace yourself for this similarly explosive Aussie dating series, Love Triangle. In this series, five singles are matched with two suitors each, they all move in together (hence the 'triangle' reference), and the single must choose between the two at the end of the experience. Pretty straightforward, right? Well, given the Stan Original Series is created by the same producers of MAFS, don't expect the participants to go sailing off into the sunset. Case in point, the Season 3 reunion special, which aired on Sunday night, will have you asking Jacqui and Clint who? In the reunion, hosted by US Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause, unseen footage was aired exposing a secret kiss between singles Bernie and Chloe. The pair shocked the cast when the footage was shown, leaving their respective suitors –Marisa and Jazmin, and Beck and Emma – gobsmacked. As their kiss aired, so does a voiceover of Bernie telling a producer he has no regrets about the kiss. 'Actually, I can't lie to you. I don't feel bad that I did it sneakily,' he says. 'What the f**k?' says Emma, who Chloe dumped on finale – the same day she ran to Bernie to say she would rather 'pursue' him. 'That is such a f***ing blindside. What is that?' she added of the footage she just watched. 'What a fool I feel like. What a fool.' 'You're a f***ing tw*t!' Marisa tells Bernie, who is sat right next to him. 'You're just a liar. You kissed (Chloe) when we were all together at a party, went behind all of our backs. Four of us are collateral damage. You couldn't have waited? It's so disrespectful.' 'It's a game to you, all a game to you,' Jazmin added. Beck was so distraught, she had to walk off set: 'I'm going to have a panic attack, I'm so sorry,' she says. When she later returns, she says, 'I just feel invalidated. I feel completely lied to. I'm hurt, really hurt. I'm questioning everything now.' If you thought that was a lot to unpack, Chloe reveals that Bernie also dumped her just 12 hours prior, before they began filming the reunion episode. 'I quite frankly think it was disgusting, and I feel like such an idiot,' she tells the group of Bernie's behaviour after watching the footage. 'Bernie and I have been getting to know each other for the past few weeks.... Last night, Bernie told me that he didn't want to continue pursuing me.' But it's not just those directly affected by the betrayal that let Bernie have it. Even controversial participant Mike – who was just as divisive on MAFS in 2019 when he appeared on the show – called Bernie out on his behaviour. 'Why'd you change your mind Bernie?' Mike asks about the break-up, to which a dejected Chloe says, 'Because we have different senses of humour.' Bernie finally pipes up and says he felt he just couldn't be '100 per cent himself' with Chloe. He also argued that he did like Chloe a lot, and even spent money on a romantic getaway to the Blue Mountains for them. 'Like, if I don't feel anything for someone, why would I spend the money?' he says. Host Stause puts him in his place, 'That's literally the playbook for f**k boys. Excuse my language, but it's all to sleep with someone then move on to the next.' 'This is the thing I've noticed about you,' Mike tells Bernie in a heated exchange. 'You're never wrong. You've hurt these two girls, you've hurt those two girls. You can't take acknolwdgement of the fact that you're a f**k boy.' 'You snatched her up, you had your way with her, and last night you flicked her.' Elsewhere in the reunion Payton – another one of the singles – discovers that Jordan, the suitor she chose in the end and was still dating at the reunion, does not actually find her attractive. 'F**k you, man. You know that I'm not attracted to that,' he was recorded telling co-star Nuri in an off-camera chat earlier in the season. 'I asked for small, tan, ethnic... But she is the complete opposite in every single thing.' 'I'm not gonna f***ing date her. It's bulls**t,' he continued. 'Literally any other girl here I would be into.' Although Payton was left shellshocked, she did manage to spit out, 'That's f***ed'. Stause did warn viewers of the drama to come. In an interview with ahead of the Season 3 launch, the Selling Sunset star hinted at a bombshell reveal at the reunions show. 'I have to say this is unprecedented to anything I've seen. This was insane,' Chrishell tells us. 'As hard as it was to deliver that news, I wanted (Payton) to know that. Because I feel like sometimes somebody might join the show and, in my opinion, Jordan joined for the wrong reasons. 'The whole point of the show is to be open to dating someone whose looks might not be exactly what you go for, but clearly that was not his intention because he had a lot to say about her looks and was just very degrading about it. 'It was very telling, what other reason would he have come on the show then if you were so closed off to that? 'It was very dramatic and no one saw any of that coming, so it was hard.'
