‘Stanley Whitney: How High the Moon' Review: Subtle Surprises, Saturated Colors
Boston
A painting by Stanley Whitney is easy to identify: a not-quite-regular grid of bold colors with assertive horizontal strokes for emphasis. But recognizing this distinctive image is not enough. If we look closely, we discover surprising color relationships, a wealth of varied edges, nuances of paint application, shifts in proportions, and unexpected dislocations of apparently continuous space.
